Pinterest set to boom this Christmas

Last year, in December alone, customers spent nearly £8 billion purchasing products from an ecommerce store. As we at eSellution tell all of our clients on a regular basis, social media plays a vital role in helping your store achieve any long standing success.

When planning out your Christmas social media attack, you must make sure that you include Pinterest in all of your plans. While many major bands use the social media site to create their own boards containing their own products, you shouldn't just think as a platform only being useful for companies with an established brand image. Whether your business is big or small, there are a number of large benefits to taking the time to establish yourself on Pinterest.

Especially over Christmas, with many ecommerce stores all vying for the custom of people looking to purchase presents, food and other holiday necessities, standing out from the crowd and getting your products out there can often be difficult. Pinterest allows you to create your own personal boards containing images of all the products you have for sale. When a customer then searches for an image related to one of your products, it displays that product to the user.

Pinterest is a fantastic way to begin increasing your brand image and product awareness, encouraging more people to visit your site and view the products on your page. While you may have a number of different marketing channels that you devote most of your time to, you need to incorporate Pinterest as for starters is is completely free to create a board and get it up there for people to see and secondly, it,s global exposure with over 10 million active users, meaning it can dramatically increase the levels of traffic your store will see over Christmas.

Read our article "Pinterest better than Facebook" to see the statistics as to why you need to use this social media platform in order to achieve success this Christmas. With less than a month to go until Christmas, it is essential you begin marketing your store, brand and products across all marketing channels to ensure you get the exposure required to bring in the desired results.

How to create a successful blog

When producing content to engage with your audience or for the purpose of improving your search engine ranking, producing fresh and entertaining content on a regular basis can often be difficult. However, whether you run an ecommerce store or another type of business, there are a number of different ways you can keep your audience engaged on a regular basis.

  • Break up your text - If a reader has to read through reams and reams of text, no matter how appealing your writing is, there are soon going to get either bored or frustrated. The best way to avoid this is to break up your text by either separating the text into paragraphs, using bullet points to make key points concise or inserting a range of different images that relate to your subject.

  • Don't waffle - Just like having clumps of text all together, taking three sentences to say something that can be summed up in one is another way to alienate your audience. Keep your writing sharp and concise, allowing your writing to be as informative as possible.

  • Offer guest bloggers - While you might produce appealing content and have a dedicated audience, having a guest write an article for your site from time to time can have a number of benefits. The obvious benefit is that you are getting fresh content without you having to actually write it. Furthermore, you are also getting a professional source with their own following to write for your site. This means that their audience will visit your site to view the content the guest blogger has produced for you, resulting in your brand image, website traffic and total blog reads taking a healthy boost.

  • Stay topical - When coming up with ideas for content, you should always be aware of what subjects are topical both in the news and in social circles. You can then look to create your own slant on this subject by relating it to something to do with your ecommerce business. This allows you to try and achieve the highest reads possible as there will be a number of people out there currently interested in that specific topic. However, this interest works both ways. There is no point writing about something that people were interested in a few months ago as they are likely no longer interested in anything relating to it.

  • Get your audience involved - When writing a blog article, try and pose questions in your text that that makes the reader think and possibly encourages them to engage with you either through your social media pages or by commenting at the bottom of the blog post. Creating a platform for discussion at the end of your article is a great way to establish a dedicated audience and achieve a high amount of reads and shares.

  • Share your content - While you may get a few reads from your dedicated audience by just writing a blog post and then leaving it there for people to read, you need to share your content in a number of different places to give your content the best exposure possible. This means sharing your articles across Facebook, Twitter, Digg, StumbleUpon, Pinterest, Reddit and any other social bookmarking sites you come across. Depending on the CMS system or ecommerce software you are using to create your blog, you also want to include links to the social media pages to do with your business. That way if someone stumbles across one of your blog articles, they can visit one of your social media pages to get more information about your business.

  • Post regularly - Whether you are posting to entertain your audience or to improve your social media ranking through backlinks, it is vitally important you post on a regular basis. Just writing an article every few months isn't going to be enough to get enough backlinks to boost your ranking or to get a dedicated following. At the very least you should be producing one or two articles a week. If you have the time you may even decide to produce one every day.

  • Link to other areas - If you are looking to produce your blog in order to help generate traffic and hopefully turn them into customers, remember to mention the services you provide within the text as well as placing links to other areas of your website.

New Pinterest feature gives the platform a new dimension

Pinterest have created a new feature called "Secret Boards" that allows users to create a board that can only be viewed by invitation only.

Pinterest software engineer Evrhet Milam believes that it is a great time to test the new feature with the festive period fast approaching: "You can use secret boards to keep track of holiday gifts, plan a special event or work on a project that you aren't yet ready to share with the world."

While the need feature seems to be a great way for users to work in secret on their own personal projects, the new feature can also be a great benefit to an ecommerce store or other online business, such as an eBay store.

If you are working on adding a new product range to your store, you may create a secret board that only your members of staff can access, suggesting different products you could possibly add to your store. However, if isn't just in-house where this feature benefits. You could also use the feature to give your dedicated customer base, such as your social media followers, a sneak peak at the new products you are adding to your store in the near future by inviting them to have a look. Not only would it allow them to feel more of a valued customer, but it would also allow you to get some initial feedback as to how popular each product will be when it eventually goes on sale.

Pinterest is fast becoming one of the most popular social media tools particularly for an ecommerce business, allowing owners to share images on their products in order to increase they brand and product awareness as well as increase traffic to their store. The site currently has around 20 million unique visitors, the vast majority of them being women.

Pinterest better than Facebook?

With an increase in interactivity, content and total users, is Pinterest becoming a better social media platform than Facebook in being able to drive customers to your ecommerce store and bring in sales?

In the UK alone, Pinterest has seen a growth in visits of 786% in the last year from 901,761 to 7,985,316. As we have said time and time again here at eSellution, for any business big and small looking to achieve online success, Pinterest is a social media platform that you must be taking advantage of and incorporate into your marketing campaign.

According to a research carried out earlier this year by jewellery and accessories retailer, Boticca.com, Pinterest is now a better social media platform at driving sales than Facebook. Figures released by the site showed that not only did Pinterest make up 10% of their online sales, compared to 7% from Facebook, the average amount spent per user was more than twice as much spent as by Facebook users.

Why is Pinterest doing so well?

The success of Pinterest when compared to Facebook comes from in the ease in which you can have a customer engage with your products. Facebook has limitations meaning, although you can post status updates and links, if you post a number of different product images on your news feeds, your followers are only going to be able to see a maximum of 4 of these images unless they decide to open up the album and view the rest. Pinterest's board allows a business to post as many images as they like on to a board, meaning when a user views that board, they are instantly exposed to all of the product images the online store has on show.

The fact that a user can see more products on Pinterest without having to actually click on anything, means that it is more likely you are going to interest different people in different products. This interest then encourages more people to visit the only store and thus is what is causing the higher conversion rate than Facebook.

However, although Facebook's conversion rate was lower than Pinterest in one case study, you shouldn't count out the social media giants. After celebrating reaching the 1 billion monthly users mark last month and having a number of new advertising features being integrated into the platform each day, Facebook is still is very important channel for increasing your brand image and driving traffic to your site.

Is Pinterest the best for your business?

Okay, so you've decided to embark on a social media campaign to increase the social media standing of your online store. When prioritising which platforms to focus on your decide that Facebook and Twitter is the best way to go as they traditionally have been the best platforms for success. However, is Pinterest now usurping Facebook and Twitter's dominance as being the best social media platform for an ecommerce business?

While Pinterest has a substantially lower average monthly usage than the other two social media platforms, it can be a much more efficient tool for your eBay, Facebook store or any other ecommerce store you may have, as it's overall package can be much more efficient in helping improve your business as a whole.

Although Facebook allows you to post a variety of content such as videos, images and status updates, Pinterest allows you to not only promote all of the products your store sells, but allows people who aren't linked to your account to stumble across them and then use your account as a gateway to purchase from your store.

The success of Pinterest comes in its minimalist design, relying on purely a visceral appeal through its images, rather than using text or any other content to add weight. Added to that is the levels of engagement it creates as users are able to visit and ecommerce store of a product image they have discovered, share it with friends or leave a comment for others to read.

From the perspective on an online store, this is a great marketing channel to use in conjunction with your ecommerce software, allowing you to increase your brand image, as more users can view your products and potentially share them with their friends, increase traffic to your site through the profile links placed on the image as you originally "Pinned" the image and increase your conversion rate as you know anyone visiting your store through this channel has done so because they are already interested in one particular product.

While you shouldn't overlook other social media platforms and focus solely on Pinterest, the success of any business social media campaign lies in being able to  effectively incorporate Pinterest along with all other social media platforms in equal weighting. Whenever you have a new product or range added to your store, you should update your Pinterest content to ensure that any new images are placed on your relevant boards.

The success of Pinterest's layout is emphasised by the fact that eBay are employing a similar layout style as their new home page design within the coming weeks.

There has never been a better time for your business to use Pinterest

There has never been a better time for small businesses to take advantage of Pinterest as, according to research carried out by Shareaholic, Pinterest has recently moved ahead of Yahoo as the 4th biggest source of traffic on the Internet. Since May, the site has doubled in size with more users than ever taking advantage of the platform.

If you are a run an ecommerce store, you should be looking to take advantage of Pinterest in order to create an extra marketing stream to promote your products to users. If you have never used Pinterest or are unsure what it is, essentially Pinterest is a virtual pinboard for images. When a user visits the site they can click on the search bar and enter a keyword related to images they would like to search for. They will then be shown a list of images that relate to the search parameters. The user then has the option to click on an image to view it in greater detail, comment on the image, like it or repin it.

How can this help my business?

When selling through an online store, the more places you can display your products, the more chance you are going to have of making a sale. Pinterest allows you to add all of your product images to their system, meaning that if a user searches for something that is related to one of your products (e.g. women's shoes) the image of your product will be placed within these search results. If a user clicks on your product image, they can then see your profile as you are the one who originally "Pinned" it to the site. When the user lands on your profile, they are able to not only see all of the other images you have added to Pinterest, but they can also click on one of the external links to visit your store or view other social media accounts.

Even if the user looks at your product but doesn't visit your online store, they may decide to "repin" the image meaning it then appears on their own Pinterest board for a whole new set of people to see. You can see the snowball effect happening here as more and more people will see your product and become aware of your overall brand, increasing the traffic your store is going to generate.

How to get started?

Using Pinterest is pretty straightforward, what you first need to do is visit the Pinterest website and create a new account for free. Once the account has been created, you will then need to click on "Add" at the top of the page and select the image on your computer that you would like to place on the site. If a number of your products fall under one category, such as a specific product range, you could look to create a new board to place them all on. With over 10 million registered users on the site, it is a great opportunity to establish an extra marketing channel for your products, increasing the traffic and sales you will generate.

A detailed guide to increasing your sales on eBay

With over 100 million registered eBay users worldwide, it is becoming more difficult than ever to sell products online. No matter what items you decide you want to sell, there will be thousands of other people out there all selling the exact same products. So, how do you make a customer choose to buy the product from you, rather than getting it from someone else?

While an eBay store owner may not have large amounts of time to spend on optimising their store, there are a few simple tasks you can do both on and off eBay to help not only increase traffic to your store, but also make your products more visible and appealing to customers.

On eBay...

Product Title - One of the more obvious aspects of your products but what you insert will make all the difference in terms of whether a user will find it in their search. The first few words of your product title need to be the keywords that relate to your product. Essentially they need to be the words that a customer would type in a search bar when looking for that particular product. Many people like to put stars or exclamation marks at the start of their product title and while this will help the title stand out visually to the user, it will most likely result in your product appearing further down the search results than you would have liked.

Product Description - Just like your product title, the key to a good product description is to cut out any waffle. It should be clear, concise and include all of the information that a customer will need in order to make an informed decision. You should also include all other information about the item as a whole such as condition, warranty and the delivery options that will be available to the customer. The more information you provide them with, the more comfortable they will feel in purchasing from your store.

As you are a professional business, it is important that you project a professional image to your customers. This means that when writing both the product title and product description you should refrain from the following:

  • Placing capital letters where they aren't grammatically correct
  • Including a number of different fonts in your title and description
  • Including a number of different colours in your title and description

Product Image - One of the most important aspects of any product when determining if a product will actually be sold or not. If your product does not have an image, the likelihood is that the the item won't get sold. The image should clearly show the product to the customer. If the image is blurred or doesn't show the product in its entirety, it's going to make customers sceptical about the product as they may believe something may be wrong with it. Many eBay stores now employ a professional photographer to take images of all their products to ensure that the the images they place on their online store are of the highest possible quality. You should also look to have numerous images of each of your products, showing all areas of the item from various angles. Like I said earlier, the more information you can provide a customer with, the more likely they will make a purchase.

Stand out from your rivals with a custom template from eSellution
Store Template - The look of your store is another important factor in helping your business stand out from your competitors. Having the same generic eBay template that most other stores have is just going to make you seem much less professional and also provides no real reason why a customer should choose your store as opposed to a store that has the same generic template and products. Having a custom eBay template on your store will work wonders in giving your business a new lease of life, making it seem more professional and appealing to visiting customers as well as increasing the number of sales you are going to make, as customers will have more trust and confidence in your products and services.

Increased Speed and Engagement -  Although you may receive a hundreds of customers visiting your store each day, you should try and make the experience as personal as you can for each customer. One of the ways to do this is to keep the customer well informed throughout the entire purchasing process. This means emailing them when the order has been placed, when the order has been processed and when it has been dispatched. Keeping the customer in the loop stops them getting frustrated and also makes them feel more valued, encouraging them to become a repeat buyer in the future. While engagement is important, so is speed. People generally want something as quick as possible, meaning the faster you can get the product to the customer, the happier they are going to be.

A Good DSR - Your detailed seller rating (DSR) is another key aspect of your eBay store as poor feedback from your customers is going to put future customers off buying from your store. All eBay businesses are going to get one or two bad reviews it happens everyone, the key is to act on these bad reviews to make sure that you don't get more reviews for the same issue. The key to making your business a success is to look at all feedback, even negative, in a positive light. All feedback is a great way to make your online store more efficient and appealing to future customers.

Delivery Options - The more options you provide a customer with, the happier they are going to be and delivery options are no different. When a customer makes a purchase from your store, they are going to want to select a delivery option that fits in with their daily lives. Some may want next day delivery, others may want to receive the product within a few working days. Having a variety of options for customers to choose from in terms of delivery is going to make them happier with the whole experience, resulting in not only a sale, but also a good DSR.

Stock Variety - If you find that the products you currently have in your store are struggling to achieve many sales, you may look to freshen up your stock by adding a new line of items. When deciding on new items to sell, you should look at your competitors and customer buying trends to see what are the most popular items people are currently buying and how you can take advantage of a niche market by selling products that your competitors may not be selling.

Off eBay...

While the majority of your customers are going to be people who have come across your products through the eBay search feature, you shouldn't rest on your laurels and rely only on this traffic source. When running your online store, you need to be out there actively engaging with people, drawing them to your store.

Blogging - A great way to help stand yourself out from the crowd so to speak. While there are hundreds of thousands of active eBay stores, only a few of these will actually produce regular blog articles. These blogs are not only a great way to create an identity for your business, but they also draw in users who may not know about your business, but are simply interested in the article. This then gives you the opportunity to transform these users from readers to customers. When deciding what content to produce, you should look to produce articles that are related to the products and services that your business provides. For example, if you run an eBay store selling various clothing items, you may look to produce content about the lastest fashion trends or news from the world of fashion. These blogs will also play a great role in helping improve the ranking of your store in search engines, resulting in even more traffic and sales.

Increase your sales with social media engagement
Social Media - Probably the most important part of marketing and customer engagement for any eBay business. In order to draw customers to your ecommerce store, you are going to have to create a brand identity and make people aware of your business. To do this you should start by making accounts for your business across all social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. This then allows you to generate followers and provide content to these followers, advertising products and offers you currently have in your store. These followers then have the ability to share content you produced to their friends and followers, meaning your content could be exposed to thousands of people in a short space of time.

For those who have never used Pinterest, I strongly recommend using it for your online business. This site allows you to place images of your products on to the site, for users to come across them when they carry out a search. This allows users to become aware of your product without actually visiting your store, increasing the levels of social commerce that your business could achieve.

Forums - Allows you to actively engage with buyers and sellers alike, getting any help or assistance you may need, while also helping provide other users with any help or guidance they may require. Building up a good, authoritative image on these forums, not only helps improve your business image making you seem much more professional, but will also result in more people visiting your online store to take a look at your products and possibly purchase some of them. Another option to take advantage of these forums is to create advertment banners and pay to have them placed on various forums. This increases the exposure your brand can achieve and will result in extra traffic to your eBay store.

Marketing - There are a number of different marketing tools you can look to use in order to help draw customers to your store. This could possibly involve sending out advertisement emails and SMS messages as well as using search engine ads and taking advantage of retargeting. For a small business, I would recommend using email marketing and retargeting to begin with. Email marketing it easy to carry out and allows you to send a message to a large number instantly. Retrargeting allows you to build up regular customers by having your products appear to customer in banner advertisements across various sites. While this costs money to implement, it ensures that your products are being exposed to people who will definitely have an interest in the items, resulting in more traffic and a higher conversion rate for your eBay store.

Sell Across Multiple Platforms - While eBay is going to be your primary source for selling products, there is no harm in increasing the exposure your products can achieve by selling these products across more platforms. Having ecommerce, mobile and Facebook versions of your store allows you to import your eBay products on to each of the platforms and allowing more people to become aware of your products. While you may think this would be a more costly and time consuming route, there are a number of ecommerce platforms that make this relatively simple. The service we offer here at eSellution allows you to create your own ecommerce store selling across all of these platforms, integrating it all with your current eBay store, without you having to spend more time than you currently spend running your eBay store and you can get it all for free

Beginners guide social media success

When running an ecommerce store, the ability to effectively engage with your community through your social media channels is going to be important in helping bring traffic to your site and encourage them to purchase. However, for those who may not use social media often or may be new to running an online store, where should you create social media accounts and what should you post?

Where to post?

While the two obvious social media sites you definitely need to look at are Facebook and Twitter, these shouldn't be the only two that you focus on. Today, there are a number of different social media sites that are able to get a high number of users interacting with their site each day. These platforms include Pinterest, YouTube, Google+ and also social bookmarking sites such as StumbleUpon, Digg, Delicious and Reddit. Placing your content on each one of these sites is going to allow as many people as possible to become aware of your business name and what it is you offer. This, albeit limited initial engagement, forms the basis for your customer relationships, increasing the chances of you generating traffic and sales.

What to post?

So now we have decided where we need to place our social media content, the next thing we need to decide is what are we actually going to post? Well what you post depends on what it is your business offers and how much time you have to spend on it.

Blog Posts - This isn't a sales piece, rather an informative piece that is related to your business. So if you run an electronics store, you may write some articles on the latest technology news or how certain electronic products could help make managing your life easier. Your blog posts are a great way to not only improve the ranking of your website through keywords, but to also create a platform to inform and engage with your customers. Within your blog you can also place links letting people know how they can access your online store.

Products - The more places you can show off your wears to people, the more chance you have of turning them into customers. You should be placing images on all of your social media sites on a regular basis, showing off the most popular products you have for sale and also any new products that you add to your store. While the best social media sites for showing off your product images are Facebook and Pinterest, there is nothing wrong with placing them across all of your social platforms. The strength of social media comes in the ability for users to share these images between their contacts, meaning your content can be exposed to a whole new customer base who didn't even know your store existed.

Sales and Offers - In terms of providing content to make sure you are able create a popular social media platform, this is the most important. As we have mentioned in the past, the majority of people who follow a business on social media sites, do so to find out about the latest sales and offers. For this reason you should make sure that as soon as you decide to launch promotion, you place it on your social media sites for everyone to see. You can also choose to reward your social media followers by creating a promotion specifically for them. This would allow them to enter a specific code you have posted on your social media account, which they can then use to receive a discount on a product. Not only does this make your social media followers feel more valued, it also attracts new customers to join your social media channels just to find out about these offers.

Also, when running a promotion, you can also look to increase customer engagement by creating a promotion that specifically requires them to give their opinion, possibly through some sort of voting system. For example, you could post four items from your store on a specific social media site, such as Facebook and ask your fans to vote on which item they would like to see a discount on. This way you are placing a promotion on an item that you know will be popular with customers and will also get sales.

Answering Questions - Sometimes it is the simple things that are going to bring you the greatest success. While posting blog content, images and offers are all very important, sometimes answering a question from a user could be just as effective. Answering any queries users may have not only makes them feel more comfortable about purchasing from your store in the future, it also helps give your business a personality, making it seem much more approachable and trusting in the eyes of potential customers.

Social Commerce - Within today's world of online selling, social media is not only a place to interact with customers, but is now also a platform where you can sell products directly to the customers. If you have your own Facebook store, you are able to have customers purchase items directly from Facebook. Depending on the items your store sells, this could be a popular platform as they would not have to leave Facebook to visit a third party site and you could also take advantage of a customer's buying impulse by allowing them to purchase a product as quick as possible.

A statistical look at why your business should be using Pinterest now

Yesterday, we looked at all of the various types of social commerce a business can undertake to help not only grow their business's brand, but also increase customer traffic and sales. While we did touch on Pinterest  and some of the benefits it can offer your business, today we are going to highlight why for some online stores, it is absolutely imperative that you use Pinterest today to begin taking advantage of the substantial customer traffic it can bring to your store.

Behind Facebook and Twitter, Pinterest is the third most popular form of social media with over 11 million total users and 4 million active users every day. In the past we have highlighted the need for social commerce, with a particular focus on Facebook and Twitter as they have substantially more traffic then other social media platforms. However, recent studies have found that buyers who are referred to your store from Pinterest are 10% more likely to buy something than those who have come from other social media platforms. Furthermore, these customers also spend on average 10% more than other referrals, underpinning the increased revenue stream that Pinterest can bring to your ecommerce store.

The beauty of Pinterest is that it combines all aspects of social media as well as some aspects of mobile commerce. The Pinterest app has received over 250,000 downloads on to android and smartphones. If a customer comes across an image of your product, they can then use the application to access the mobile version of your store, increasing the mobile commerce aspect of your business. Not only that, but you can also use Pinterest to create some form of convergence within your social commerce. When a customer finds an image they can not only access the mobile store, but also share this image across other social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. This level of convergence dramatically increases the number of customers who will become aware of your products as although Pinterest has 11 million users, if one of these users shares the image, your product then has the potential to reach over 900 million on Facebook and over 100 million on Twitter.

While Pinterest is better for certain businesses in comparison to others, as the social media platform is free to use, there is no harm is using it to help generate added traffic to your site. Out of all the members who have joined the social media site, 60% are female. If you run an eBay store or other ecommerce platform that provides products aimed particularly at women, this is a great platform to promote your content. While the gender of users is more orientated towards females, the age of these users varies between all ages. This means that no matter what age range your products are aimed at, there will be an audience for your items on Pinterest.

The more disposable income a customer has, the better it is for your online store, it is more likely that they will be willing to make a purchase. Around 83% of all Pinterest's users earn a yearly income that exceeds $25,000. Furthermore, according to statistics released at the end of Q2 2012, Pinterest accounts for 40% of all social media purchases, with the other 60% belonging to Facebook. However, this doesn't mean forget about Twitter altogether. Although Twitter may not bring the direct revenue through referrals, Twitter is an important tool in regularly building up your brand image by personally engaging with customers and industry leaders through Tweets and is something that you should definitely be using on a regular basis.

When you decide to pin a particular product from your store on to Pinterest, you need to be aware that it is not only just the image itself, but the content that goes with the image that is important. What you need to remember is that Pinterest is not a platform for you to pitch your products at customers in order to try and make a sale. It should just simply be a platform to show an image and if a user is attracted to the image of your product, then it is up to them to then make their own mind up as to whether to purchase the product, with you of course giving them a nudge in the right direction with links on how they can access your store. Brands using Pinterest to show their products have found that they have more success in creating sales through this social media when they do not show the price of the product. Telling the user how much the product costs on the pinned image is almost a turn off for users as you are turning this from a social media platform into more of an advertising channel.

With only around 53% of all small businesses actively engaging through social media channels, there is a number of great opportunities to get ahead of your competitors by increasing the number of people who are aware of your business and the products you sell, helping to create a positive brand image.

The basic guide to social commerce

As we have highlighted in recent weeks, Social commerce is becoming an ever increasing part of online selling. Businesses who actively engage is social commerce see greater levels of interaction, traffic and most importantly sales. Social commerce is a great way to help your online business develop their own brand identity and generate increased levels of profit.

However, if you have yet to look at social commerce for your business or are looking to improve the efficiency in which you carry it out, what are the basic steps you should look to do correctly to give you the best chance of success?

Today we are going to look at the different social media sites you should be advertising your business on, explaining what they offer in terms of promoting your brand.

Facebook

The most popular form of social commerce for any business with over 900 million regular users. Creating a page for your business allows you to provide your customers with various pieces of information such as product images, sales or simply sociable information to engage with your customers. It is this engagement which makes Facebook such a valuable tool. While customers engage with your website in terms of making a sale, there is not really any form of informal conversation. Facebook allows you to not only speak to your customers, but it also allows your customers to speak to you, ask you questions and give opinions regarding your business. If you are looking to get your business's social commerce platform off the ground, Facebook needs to be your first port of call. Facebook has also developed it's own F-commerce platform within online selling as a number of businesses now sell products directly on Facebook through a Facebook store.

Twitter

Allows users to follow your business through your Twitter page. They will then be able to see any status or product information you display through your Tweets. People can then respond to your Tweets with their own messages or Retweet your message for people who follow that user to then see, giving you the chance to increase your brand awareness and gain more followers. However, what you must always bear in mind is that the majority of people only follow you on both Facebook and Twitter to find out about any sales and offers your business is running. For this reason you should look to engage with your followers on a regular basis and provide them with the information they require. This could mean offering certain discounts solely to these people who have followed you on your social media channels.

YouTube

Whether you decide to use YouTube or not for your business depends entirely on what it is your business does and what types of marketing techniques you use. As YouTube is a site for sharing various videos, your business needs to have the relevant content for this platform. This means if you have created any promotional ads or other video content, you should put it on YouTube as it will greatly increase the number of viewers you have for your content. If you run a business that sells various goods, such as an eBay store, you can look to create a slideshow displaying the images of products you have for sale in your store. A customer may then come across the slideshow, find a product that they like the look of and then visit your online store to purchase the product.

Pinterest

Like YouTube, Pinterest is another social media platform that specialises solely in visual content. However, rather than displaying videos, Pinterest displays images which you can pin to various boards for people to see. Like I said earlier with YouTube, if you run a goods store, you can 'pin' images of your products on to Pinterest for users to see. If a user finds an image that appeals to them, they can access the profile of the person who originally pinned the image and find a link to visit the store that has the product for sale or share the image between their friends. Either way it is great for an online store as you gain an extra platform to advertise your products for free, you can gain sales through people becoming interested in your products and you can also increase your brand awareness through your products being shared and seen by numerous people.

Fancy

This is a site operates pretty much the same way to Pinterest but isn't as well known with just under a million user, compared to over 11 million on Pinterest. Like Pinterest, the site allows you to add images with you have come across on the web for your friends to then see and also "re-fancy" them if they like the look of the image. However, the problem users are finding with the site is that it is much more commercialised than Pinterest, seemingly taking away the feel of social sharing it offers. That being said, Fancy is a great way for online stores to sell their products as it is much easier to access the a store once the customer finds a product image they like.

Use Pinterest to grow your business

Although Facebook and Twitter are seemingly the powerhouse platforms when it comes to social commerce, there is a platform that is on the rise to possibly challenge them for top spot one day and that is Pinterest.

You may think that Pinterest is only a platform that allows you to improve your own social standing by sharing personal images, when in fact, Pinterest can be a great way to help drastically improve your business.

Before you decide to embark on a campaign to increase your business's profile through Pinterest, you first need to look at what your online store sells and who your target demographic is. 87% of all people who use Pinterest are female, so if you run an online store than sells products primarily to men, Pinterest most likely isn't going to be a worthwhile platform to promote your business. However, if for example, you run an ecommerce or eBay store that sells women's clothing and accessories, this is the perfect platform for you for a number of reasons:

1) With 87% of the audience being female, there is going to be a huge user base that are your demographic and will be interested in what you have to sell.

2) Pinterest allows you to pin various images of products from your store to the site for other people to see. This gives you a free way to advertise your products to a huge audience, allowing them to gain an interest in what you sell. When you pin the image of a product to the site, Pinterest states that this image was pinned by you. This means that when someone selects the image, they are then able to navigate from the image to your own profile. For there they can then select your online store's web address to visit your store and purchase the item.

3) While Facebook and Twitter both also allow you to post information and images for other people to see, on average people tend to spend an hour longer on Pinterest than they do on Facebook and 41 minutes longer than Twitter. The longer people spend on Pinterest, the greater chance they have of locating your product images and your profile page.

4) If a user comes across a image of one of your products and they like the look of it, they can then "Repin" the image to allow everyone linked with their profile to then see the image. This amplification of your product images will allow for a whole new cluster of people to see your images, increasing interest and brand awareness for your store.

5) Pinterest also allows you to follow other businesses that sell similar products to what your online store provides. This allows you to keep track of how their business is going and also see any new products that they have released via the images they have pinned.

Free Product Advertising With Pinterest

To make your store a popular online success, you must have a large amount of traffic that then turns into sales. However, if you have just set up a new online or eBay store, you may find that trying to advertise your product ahead of other online stores is extremely difficult.

When looking at different avenues to advertise your products, one of the options you should strongly consider is using 'Pinterest.' Pinterest is a website that brings up a whole host of pictures that relate to a user's search parameters. When running an online store, this is a great way to advertise your product on a larger scale.

To put it in to context, one of the most popular search types of Pinterest is people looking for different styles of clothing. If you run an online clothes store, this is a fantastic way to advertise your products to people who have never even heard of your store, let alone visited it. If a person finds a picture they like, they can then click on the image, view the profile on the original poster view other pictures from your store. This will often result in people then typing your store name into a search engine in order to visit it. The great benefit of this is that it will mean the people who visit your store this way are already interested in a specific product, greatly increasing your site's conversion rate.

The site also allows users to 'Like', 'Comment' and 'Repin' an image. This means that if someone 'Repins' your product, the image could be viewed by thousands of people in a matter of minutes. This level of coverage for a small business can make a huge difference in your traffic and when it's completely free, you should make sure you take advantage of it.
