Time management for your small business

If you run your own online store and are the sole employee, you may not have all the time you need to efficiently run your business as you may have other commitments such as a full time job.

As you have so much to do in order to make your ecommerce store a success each and every day, how can you manage your time effectively to ensue you make the most out of every second.

Plan out a schedule

Everyday you should have a clear schedule of what needs doing on that particular day. In addition to planning everything out, you should also prioritise which are the more important tasks. For example, you may have a backlog of orders that need to be completed that are a much higher priority than say writing the latest article for your blog. Having a schedule allows you to have a clear direction regarding what needs to be done each day. If you are unorganised then your business will be the same and you will limit the success your business can achieve.

Stick to it

Creating a schedule is one thing, but actually sticking to it is another thing altogether. This is where your own self discipline must comes in to play. Your self discipline will reflect how much you want your business to be a success. If you badly want your business to a success, you will put as much time into it as you need to in order to make this happen. The best way to stick to a schedule is simply through repetition  Once you have created a daily system for your online business that works well, it becomes easier to stick to that system because you are used to it.

Work weekends

No one likes to do it but sometimes if there just isn't enough time during the week you have no option but to work on a weekend and obviously when running an ecommerce store, weekends are when you are going to carry out a large number of your transactions. However, if you do have a quiet weekend with very few transactions, there is no harm is carrying out some of the minor tasks that you would usually do during the week. These are tasks such handling all of your correspondences that won't take up all of your weekend but allow you free up a few hours during the week.

Organisation Tools

While these won't complete any of the tasks for you, you can use organisation tools to help sync up the various processes for your business, allowing you to keep everything you do organised and structured making the tasks easier to complete. If you have a smartphone another option would be to sync up all of the emails, social media and other correspondence for your store on to your phone so that when you have a few minutes free at work or are on your lunch break you can quickly answer them all, keeping your customers happy and freeing up time for you to spend on other areas when you do get home.

Get some help

Although you may want to keep your total costs down to the minimum, sometimes your workload is just too much that it begins to affect the overall running of your business and you have no option but to hire someone to help carry the load. However, you don't have to hire them on a full time basis. Depending on how badly you are struggling with the workload, you may find that you only need some help a few hours each week to help complete orders or carry out other tasks.

There has never been a better time for your business to use Pinterest

There has never been a better time for small businesses to take advantage of Pinterest as, according to research carried out by Shareaholic, Pinterest has recently moved ahead of Yahoo as the 4th biggest source of traffic on the Internet. Since May, the site has doubled in size with more users than ever taking advantage of the platform.

If you are a run an ecommerce store, you should be looking to take advantage of Pinterest in order to create an extra marketing stream to promote your products to users. If you have never used Pinterest or are unsure what it is, essentially Pinterest is a virtual pinboard for images. When a user visits the site they can click on the search bar and enter a keyword related to images they would like to search for. They will then be shown a list of images that relate to the search parameters. The user then has the option to click on an image to view it in greater detail, comment on the image, like it or repin it.

How can this help my business?

When selling through an online store, the more places you can display your products, the more chance you are going to have of making a sale. Pinterest allows you to add all of your product images to their system, meaning that if a user searches for something that is related to one of your products (e.g. women's shoes) the image of your product will be placed within these search results. If a user clicks on your product image, they can then see your profile as you are the one who originally "Pinned" it to the site. When the user lands on your profile, they are able to not only see all of the other images you have added to Pinterest, but they can also click on one of the external links to visit your store or view other social media accounts.

Even if the user looks at your product but doesn't visit your online store, they may decide to "repin" the image meaning it then appears on their own Pinterest board for a whole new set of people to see. You can see the snowball effect happening here as more and more people will see your product and become aware of your overall brand, increasing the traffic your store is going to generate.

How to get started?

Using Pinterest is pretty straightforward, what you first need to do is visit the Pinterest website and create a new account for free. Once the account has been created, you will then need to click on "Add" at the top of the page and select the image on your computer that you would like to place on the site. If a number of your products fall under one category, such as a specific product range, you could look to create a new board to place them all on. With over 10 million registered users on the site, it is a great opportunity to establish an extra marketing channel for your products, increasing the traffic and sales you will generate.

Looking at the bigger picture when it comes to advertising

When setting up an online store, while the products themselves are going to be what ultimately makes a customer's mind up as whether they make a purchase or not, you can help nudge them in the right direction by having the right promotional material.

If your ecommerce store is running a special offer or has recently added new products to it's inventory, you may look to create some promotional material to help drive traffic to your site. This material will generally come in the form of banner advertisements. These banner advertisements can be placed on your ecommerce store to not only make it look more inviting, but also help develop your overall brand image.

While placing these banners on your store's home page is a must, you should also look to place them in a number of different places, such as all of your social media platforms and any forums that are related to what your business sells. However, you will generally find that to place a banner on a forum, you must have some form of sponsorship with the site. Although this generally isn't too expensive, it's up to you to decide whether it is right for your business.

Although, some people may be able to create their own banners, others may just not have the time or the capabilities to develop one to the standard that your business requires. If you are someone in the latter, you can look to pay an ecommerce or design business to create a banner solely for your business. While you may think that creating a banner is a cost you can't afford to make when your business is just starting out, it is a great way to help generate traffic and sales for your site, allowing people to access your site who may not have become aware of your business through other methods.

Looking at the bigger picture

It isn't the cost you should look at, it's the potential return on your investment that the banner will bring. For example, if you have a banner created for £100 and you sell products from your store for £25, the banner only needs to bring in 4 sales for you to get back the money you paid for the banner. In the bigger picture that isn't much and when you factor in the added sales the banners could bring in through social and mobile commerce, it's definitely an avenue that any business should be looking to explore in order to develop their brand image and sales. Like all aspects of online selling, the key is to look at the biggest picture as look at what the investment will return rather than focussing on how much it will cost. As the old saying goes: "You have to spend money to make money."

Small business offers and how to stop them crippling your store

When starting up an small online store, we all want to see customers flooding in and sales being made so that we have a general idea of how successful the business is going to be. To try and generate interest, many small businesses are now looking to run a number of different promotions, offering products at a reduced price in the hope of enticing people to make a purchase.

However, while increased sales are a positive for any business, you must make sure that you don't overreach to levels that you are currently unable to handle. What I mean by this is that yes getting sales is of the utmost importance if your business is going to be successful and you are going to make a profit, but the size of your promotion should be based on the size of your business.

If you are the only person working for your business, you do not want to run a promotion on offer sites such as "Groupon" as although it will result in you gaining a significant increase to traffic, brand awareness and probably sales, it is most likely going to result in you having more business than you are able to handle. The best example of this is the story of Rachel Brown, a baker from London who decided to place a promotion on Groupon in 2011.

Rachel thought that she would try and increase sales for her bakery by placing an offer on the site allowing customers to purchase 12 cupcakes for the price of £6.50, a saving of £19.50 on their usual retail price. The offer proved to be successful, in fact it was far more successful than she could have ever imagined, as she ended up with over 10,000 orders. When she added up how much it was costing her to produce the cupcakes and compared that with how much she was making from the sales, she found that the whole promotion left her with around a £13,000 loss.

However, Rachel isn't the only small business to experience a Groupon offer gone wrong. Posie's Cafe in the US offered a promotion on the site where they were offering users $13 worth of products for the price of $6, a saving of over 50%. They made a deal with the Groupon site where the proceeds from the offer would be split 50-50 with themselves and Groupon, as Groupon take a percentage of the transaction. This resulted in the company losing around $8,000 dollars from the promotion.

If you are small ecommerce store looking to generate extra sales through a daily deals promotion, there are a number of different things you should first consider before evening beginning to put the wheels in motion:

  • Factor in your costs - Work out not only how much it is going to cost you per each sale, but also work out how much it is going to cost you should the promotion prove to be very successful. In the examples shown above, this is where they met their downfall as they didn't factor in how much it was going to cost them to run the promotion.
  • Set the right price - Obviously with it being a daily deal offer, the price needs to be less than what you are currently selling the product at and it's tempting to offer the best possible discount in order to make it as enticing as possible for customers. However, you must factor in every one of your costs and then choose a price that ensures you are going to make a profit off each transaction. The costs you should factor in aren't just the costs to produce the product, they should also be the cost of any staff, property rental costs and equipment costs. Pretty much all of the overheads you have. If you don't factor in these costs when deciding to set the price, you are going to see your overheads eat away at your profits, probably resulting in you making a loss.
  • Look at your production line - You need to realistically look at how many orders you can complete on any given day. Like I said at the start of the article, if your business has only one employee; you, then a Groupon offer may be too much for you right now. If your offer proves to be successful and results in 1000 orders, but you only usually complete 20-30 orders a day, you are going to be left with a huge backlog of orders waiting to be processed. Not only will this result in your brand image being slightly damaged as customers get fed up waiting for their order to be delivered to them, it will most likely leave you stressed, annoyed and probably thinking that the offer as a whole was more trouble that it's worth.
  • Look at your product - The example cases we looked at for this article were both food products, meaning they are products which a person would have to produce from scratch to then ship out. The easiest offers to run are those that don't require you to spend time making the product, the easiest promotions to complete are going to be where you can just simply pack the product and ship it out as soon as the order comes in.
  • Set a cut off point- The last thing you want to do is leave a promotion running over a long period of time because if the promotion does prove to be too much to handle, it is going to leave you with orders still coming in despite struggling to handle the current lot. Having a cut off period allows you to look at how successful the promotion has been without you having to commit to a substantial length of time. If the promotion has proved to be a failure, then you may have saved yourself from losing too much time and money. On the other hand, if the promotion has been a success, then you can simply list the offer again.
  • Draft in help - Whether the promotion is a huge success or just mildly successful, either way it is probably going to result in you seeing a large increase in your orders. For this reason you should look to have people on hand ready to pitch in should you need any help in getting orders out. If you run the business yourself this could simply mean getting friends and family to give you a hand completing the orders.
  • Consider the intangible factors - While you need to consider how much it is going to cost you to run the promotion and how much you are going to make by way of profit from each sale, you should also consider the other factors that will be difficult to measure. What I mean by this is that you should look at how many repeat customers this promotion could bring in. Meaning that while you may only make a small profit on each transaction through the daily deal, it could result in receiving great levels of revenue through future transactions that these customers will carry out in your store.
If you are unsure as to how successful a large scale daily deal promotion may be, you could try testing the waters by offering the same type of daily offer on your social media sites. If the promotion results in increased sales and are at a level that you can easily handle, you can look to take it to the next level and try placing the offer on a daily deal website.

The complete small business guide to marketing

So you've took the big plunge and have decided to give online selling a go. You have selected what it is you want to sell, who your target customers are and have completely set up your online store. Now that everything is set up and ready to go, the next step is to actually make customers aware of your store's existence. This is where marketing comes in to play.

In today's ecommerce world, the number of different marketing strategies you can look to undertake are substantial. While some are more effective than others, each should be carried out to ensure you bring as many customers as you possibly can to your ecommerce store.

Email Marketing

Really this is the bread and butter of marketing. No matter what your online business is and what services or products you provide, this is something you should be looking to do on a regular basis. When sending out an email marketing campaign, you should be aware that not everyone of those recipients will even open the email, let alone click on the link to access your store. A successful email campaign will have around a 15% open rate and a 1% to 1.5% click through rate. This will mean that around 10% of all the people who are opening the email are actually clicking through to your store. Although this doesn't seem like much, if you are sending out the email to around 15,000 customers for example, it means you are going to get 2,250 people open the email and around 150-225 people click on a link and visit your online store.

What you don't want to do is simply send out the same email time and time again to various customers. The key to a successful email marketing campaign is to develop and refine each email based on the previous campaign to ensure you achieve the best possible success. For example, if your last email campaign had a low click through rate, on your next email you may look to include more links to your store within the email or change the message to one that may be more appealing to your audience.

Social Media Marketing

Has become probably the most popular form of marketing due to the number of potential customers you can reach. While many people use this platform to develop social commerce for their business, creating your own business fan page can be just as effective. As you gain followers to your social media page, you then share content with your followers giving them information about the products you have on sale as well as any sales or offers you are running, providing them with constant direct links to your site.

When a customer finds a product on your website that they like the look of, they can then share this product on various social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest. This then allows a whole new audience who hasn't even visited your online store to see some of the products you have for sale. This is a great way to develop not only your customer base, but your brand, allowing a substantial audience to become aware of your store in a short space of time. While email marketing may be the first subject I have touched upon in this article, social media should be your first port of call for any new business. You will then be able to send out an email campaign, providing links in the email not only to your web store, but also to your various social media platforms.

Forums Interaction

No matter what it is your online store provides, there will be numerous forums out there specifically dedicated to that specific category. When setting up your online store, you should then visit these forums and begin engaging with the community. It's no good just going on and creating a thread about your business as most forums frown against self promotion and your post will be quickly deleted. What you need to do is interact with the community by offering advice and suggestions to other users posts. When doing this there is no harm is telling a user about your online store if it is something that will help them make a more informed decision. For example, if a user has created a post asking people to recommend them a good store to buy clothing products from, if your store sells clothes, you call tell them about your store as well as providing links for users to access. This way you are not only advertising your store to the person who created the thread, but also to all of the people who then view the thread.

Another way to advertise yourself on forums is to include all the links to your business both on your profile and in your forum signature. That way, even if you post on a thread that has nothing to do with your business, people will be able to see information and links to your store through your signature.

Telephone Marketing

This is something that may not be achievable, it all depends on the size of your business. Clearly, if it is just you running your own online business then you are going to be unable to have the time to carry out telephone marketing. If your ecommerce business is big enough that you are able to employ someone to carry out telesales then it could be a good marketing avenue depending on the skills of the salesman. What this means essentially is ringing up various people to inform them about the products and services you offer and how they can get involved. What you need to remember is that the conversion rate for this form of marketing is extremely low. Some days you may ring hundreds of people and only find a small handful that are interested in what you are selling.

Mobile Marketing

With the increasing popularity of mobile commerce, the power of mobile marketing has grown leaps and bounds in the last few years. Although creating a mobile version of your ecommerce store is incredibly important in taking advantage of this selling platform, you should also look at how you can increase your sales with mobile marketing. The main form of mobile marketing comes as SMS marketing. This is rather similar to email marketing but rather than sending the message to a users email address, you are sending it to their phone as a text message. However, with SMS marketing you cannot use HTML or images, only basic text. Also, the space you have for your message is much less meaning your message needs to be sharp and concise. Depsite these negatives when compared to email marketing, its greatest strength comes in the awareness it creates. Unlike an email, as soon as the person receives the SMS, they are instantly exposed to the message it contains. While many people instantly delete emails they think are spam, very few people will delete any text message they receive on their phone without first opening it up to look at it. What this means is that even if the person decides to delete your message within seconds after opening up, your message and brand is still gaining much more exposure than you would have originally done has the message been via email.

To run an SMS marketing campaign you must employ the services of an SMS marketing company. You will then provide them with the message you would like to send out to readers and they will then distribute the message to various mobile phones on your behalf. The amount it will cost you depends on how many people you want the message to be sent to. Many companies charge around 5p per message that is sent out.

Blogging

While this isn't a conventional marketing channel, it is a great way to not only increase your websites standing in search engines, but also make your brand aware to a large audience. The articles which you produce for your blog should be ones that are to do with subjects that are related to your business (just like this one), they shouldn't just simply be sales pitches. However, there is nothing wrong with providing links at the end of the article giving users information about products and services which may be related to the content of the article. For example, if you run an electronics store, you may write an article on the difference between LCD, LED and plasma televisions. At the end of the article you may then provide a link to the section of your online store which will allow users to view the latest sales and offers you have on those TVs.

Offline Marketing

While your store sells exclusively online, you shouldn't only be marketing your business online. Offline marketing has a number of different tools which can help increase sales and drastically improve your brand awareness. However, you will generally find that most successful forms of offline marketing cost substantially more than their online counterparts. There are a number of different offline marketing methods such as:

  • Radio Advertising - One of the most expensive forms of marketing as your message will be sent to literally hundreds of thousands of people. As this has a broad audience, it will depend on what you sell as to how successful this platform will be for your business. If the service or products you offer are only aimed at a specific niche group, then you may find that radio advertising might not be too successful.
  • Magazine Advertising - A better platform for those businesses who may offer niche services and products as you will be able to advertise your business in a magazine that is specifically to do with your business. For example, if you sell fishing equipment, you will be able to advertise your products and services in various fishing magazines, meaning that you ensure that people who read those magazines will be interested in what you have to sell.
  • Posters - A very basic form of marketing, but one which doesn't cost much to do. This involves creating a poster and then visiting local establishments to ask if it would be okay for you to put your advert up in their window. The poster should contain concise information about what it is your store offers and contact details as to how they can access your store online to make a purchase.
  • Networking Events - These are both local and national events where you can attend in order to take part is various seminars or network with other business owners. When attending these events it may be a good idea to have some business cards created with your name, store name, contact information and store URL on them. That way, when you introduce yourself to other people, you will be able to give them your business card, allowing you to make a more lasting impression. If you are business to business store then attending these events is of vital importance to ensure that you are increasing your brand and also making the initial relationships needed to help your store grow.
  • Television Advertising -Probably the most expensive form of marketing that you can have. The price you will pay is dependant on which television channel you want the advert to appear on as certains will have larger audiences. Television also allows you to create a more indepth advert than other methods, allowing you to provide more information as well as making it more entertaining. This is the best way to create your own brand identity but it is something that should only be undertaken once you have built up a good customer base. Essentially this is a marketing tool you should only use once you have achieved success in all other areas.

Boost your business with hashtags

If you are someone who uses Twitter in order to promote content produced by your online business such as blog posts and advertising Tweets, you can increase the audience for your content with the use of hashtags.

Hashtags allow you to group your content to a specific category, meaning that when a Twitter user searches for a category, if your Tweet has that searched for hashtag within it, your Tweet will be displayed to them no matter where they are in the world, whether they are following you or not.

If you are a small online store or an ecommerce business looking to advertise your brand to a wide audience, hashtags are a great way to get your content seen by people who you may not have been able to reach through other marketing methods. What's more, the fact that these people are using this hashtag means that they may already be interested in the various products or service your business provides.

There is no limit on what you can have as a hashtag. However, you need to remember that if the hashtag is really obscure, the likelihood is that no one else will be using it, which means that no one will see your Tweet through the hashtag. A good place to start when selecting hashtags for your Tweets, is to simply use that hashtag that relates to what it is your ecommerce store sells. For example, if you sell electronic goods, use the hashtag "#electronics" on your Tweets.

There are a number of other popular hashtags that small businesses should look to use to help improve their identity and gain followers. These hashtags include "#ecommerce," "#SMEs" and "#business." These hastags are generally popular and will result in people outside your followers being able to see your related tweets.

Make a profit while enjoying your weekend

It's Friday and I'm sure many of us are looking ahead to the weekend, thinking about the various activities you're going to take part in or just taking comfort in the thought of being able to relax for a few days away from work. However, when running a small business, you need to remember that running an online store is a full time job and that doesn't just mean Monday to Friday. Depending on the type of store you run, working only during the week is going to result in you missing out on huge amount of traffic.

However, just because your store needs to be open everyday to make sure you achieve the maximum number of sales, it doesn't mean that you need to spend all your time sat at your desk working, not having any free time to relax and indulge in various activities. To do this you need to be able to effectively manage your time, ensuring your online shop doesn't suffer.

All at once - When a customer places an order on a weekend, they know that most likely, the product won't be shipped out until the first working day of the following week. This means that you can check your orders on a Saturday afternoon for example, package them and have them ready to ship out first thing Monday morning. While this may take you an hour or two, doing it all in one go is better than staggering it throughout the day as the orders come in, meaning you don't have any time to do anything else. Any orders that are made on Sunday can then be processed, packaged and shipped on Monday.

Employ someone - Depending how big your online business is and how much money you are making, you may think about employing someone to run your store on a weekend. This will give you the free time to enjoy your weekend. However, when deciding to to employ someone you need to spend time to ensure you employ someone who you have full confidence in and that you know will be able to handle all aspects of your store. At the end of the day, any problems that occur during the weekend are just going to give you a headache when you return on Monday morning so you need someone who will ensure everything runs smoothly.

Automate messages - The easiest way to still run your business while enjoying your weekend is to setup automated email messages for the weekend. When a customer purchases an item, an automated message will be sent to them letting the customer know that their order will be processed first thing on Monday morning. While the customer wants their produced to the processed and shipped as soon as possible, letting them know when their order will be processed stops them becoming frustrated by the lack of forward progress over the weekend.

Out of the box advertising

With the sheer number of people looking to set up online ecommerce stores, the ability to make yourself stand out from the rest is becoming increasingly harder. While we have looked at the traditional forms of small business advertising in recent weeks, to help increase your reach to customers, maybe it's time for your business to think outside the box and try marketing ideas that you previously may not have considered.

Provide free products

Now before you start thinking that I've gone mad, I'm not suggesting you start giving out products to everyone for free, but what you could do is offer incentives to customers when they make a purchase. What I mean is that you could offer to give customers a specific item when they make a purchase over a certain amount. The product you choose to give your customers should be something that they would want but it shouldn't be something too expensive as you obviously don't want to lose money on the sale.

Customers select your products

What this form of promotion could involve is you putting a number of different items on to your store's social media pages, for customers to then vote on. The product with the highest number of votes would then be added to your store for customers to purchase. This is a great promotion for two different reasons. Firstly, it encourages customers to actually interact with your store, increasing your number of social media followers and creating better relationships for with your customers. Secondly and probably most importantly, it means you are adding a product your store that you know will be of interest to your customers.

Customer loyalty rewards

The more products a customer purchases from your store, the more loyalty points the receive. Once the customer gains a certain number of points they receive an email or some form of contact from your store letting them know that they have gained a reward. This reward could come in store credit, a percentage off a product or free delivery on certain items. What this does is make the customer feel valued, meaning they will return to your store time and time again.

Carry out a charity based promotion

Create a promotion whereby every sale that is made in your store, a certain percentage of the transaction will go to a local charity. While this will mean you make less on each item sold, the popularity in sales this will generate will mean that you make more sales, take in more money, while helping out a local charity. Any work you can do in helping a charity or foundation is going to be fantastic PR, making more people aware of your business and increasing the likelihood that they will visit your store.

While these are simple ideas, it is the simple ideas that small businesses sometimes overlook as they go in search of grand promotion ideas to radically boost traffic and sales to their online store. Sometimes, it is doing the simple things well that is going to be the difference between success and failure, rather than looking to do the biggest promotion possible.

Build Your Business on Olympic Foundations

As the entire country is gripped in Olympic fever with team GB achieving no less than 16 gold medals in the first 9 days, it really shows how good preparation and strong execution can produce exception results. While the Olympics showcases the world's sporting elite, employing this attitude can also reap great rewards for your online ecommerce store.

Preparation

When any athlete steps up to the start line, they have spent the last four years honing their skills and achieving peak fitness, to ensure that they can give the best possible performance. For any business owner, running your online store should be no different. The key to success with any store comes in great preparation. As we have touched on in a number of articles over the last few months, you need to ensure you identify a store that is unique, offers great service and has affordable prices. When deciding on what products to sell, you need to carry out extensive research to ascertain how many stores selling the same products are there already out there, will your products have a number of customers interested in buying them and how much should you be looking to sell each product for.

Spending time preparing every aspect of your business is going to make sure you have all of your bases covered. In addition to identifying key areas and how to achieve the best success in each, you also need to come up with a number of different back up scenario plans. These are basically contingency plans to allow you to alter your game plan if you haven't achieved the desired results from the start. For example, if after the first few months of trading your sales and profit figures weren't as high as you would have wanted, your contingency plan may involve purchasing ecommerce software to help improve the traffic and sales figures for your store.

In business, like in any sport, doing as much work as you can during your preparation is going to make the execution phase not only easier but also more efficient, bringing the best chance of success for your store.

Execution

After carrying out extensive research and preparation to give your store the best change of success when competing against your rivals, next comes game day. This is when you open up your store and welcome your first customer. No matter how much preparation and planning you have carried out, if you make mistakes when it actually comes to running your store, all that hard work will have been for nothing.

First and foremost, as explained in detail in one of our previous posts (eBay Store Owner's Guide to Success), every customer should be well cared for throughout the entire shopping process and beyond. Although this may seem like common sense, you will be surprised by how many businesses believe that their products are so good they will literally sell themselves, without the store owner having to make any real effort. While your products could be some of the best on the market, customer care and attention is what is going to bring them to your store and keep them coming back time and time again. This demonstrates what I highlighted earlier, you could plan out a great customer care initiative, but if you don't take care of your customers right from the start, all that preparation will be a waste of time. These first few customers are going to determine whether your store is a success or failure. If these customers have a great experience then positive opinions will begin to spread and your customer base will grow.

While this example only highlights the need to prepare a strong customer care initiative, this same process should be applied to every facet of your business such as marketing, store template design and delivery. Covering all of your bases and leaving nothing to chance is going to ensure the best possible results when it comes to executing your game plan. Poor preparation is only going to leave your business at the start line with your opponents sprinting out ahead, and you still stuck in the blocks.

Stock control issues and how to stop them occuring

When managing a small ecommerce business, stock level management is of vital importance. This is because every item you have signifies profit for your business. If you are a recently formed business, or your profit margins are currently rather tight, the profit from just one product can determine whether your figures are in the black or the red for that month.

The high value placed on your items underlines the importance in having good stock management. If you have a business that sells items in a high street store and online across various ecommerce platforms, you may find it difficult to actually keep track of much stock you have left. This is one of the main stock control issues for any business as, if you don't keep track of exactly how much stock you have left, you may find yourself overselling a product.

Overselling means essentially what you are doing is still selling a product to customers despite already running out of stock. This will cause two rather large issues for your business. Firstly, overselling a product is going to mean not only will you miss out on being able to fulfil that particular order, you will also be unable to complete all future orders for that product until you have received more stock. Secondly, if a customer purchases an item only to be then told that they actually can't have it because there is no stock left, despite receiving no notification when they originally purchased the item, that customer is going to grow annoyed with the business and is likely to leave your store to purchase the item from somewhere else.

Poor stock control seriously tarnishes the reputation of a business.  Particularly with online ecommerce stores, the key to success relies on creating a reliable and trustworthy image with your customers. If your store is unable to fulfil basic orders due to poor stock management, it's going to damage this image right from the start and will most likely result in you losing future customers.

How to solve stock control issues

If you find that you are struggling to keep track of which items are selling where and how much stock you have left, the best option for you would be to purchase some stock synchronisation software for your business. What this essentially does is monitor your current stock levels across all of your sales platforms, so  when one product is sold on a particular platform, your remaining stock levels are then updated across the rest of the platforms. This instant update in stock levels will mean that once an items stock does run out, all of your platforms will notify customers that this item is currently unavailable. However, as a business owner you should never let your stock levels get to that stage. As the stock synchronisation software will allow you to instantly see how much stock you have remaining, you now need to be looking ahead to see when your business will run out of stock. This will allow you to order more stock before you do run out so that once the stock levels do get low, more stock will arrive to replenish your numbers. This way you allow your business to keep selling products, keeping your customers happy with your store. Everyone wins!
