Google and the key to ecommerce success

Working with a number of different online stores on a daily basis, we always advise our clients that the key to success comes in not only being able to sell in as many places as possible, but also have your products appear in as many places as you can . The more places your products are visible in, the more chance a customer has of stumbling across your products and visiting your site to make a sale. One of these places you should look to have your products appear, is within the Google Shopping section.

No matter if you sell on eBay, Amazon or run your own ecommerce store, Google shopping is one of the best comparison sites around in not only helping customers locate the products they want, but helping online stores achieve a greater number of sales. A survey carried out earlier this year by CPC Strategy found that out of all of the search engine comparison sites, Google ranked highest with a click through rate of 2.78% during the first quarter. The study looked at over 4 million clicks, which cost $1.16 million in advertising spending and brought in $7.87 million in revenue.

The top 10 comparison sites based on click through rate are as follows:

  • Google - 2.78%
  • Nextag - 2.06%
  • Pronto - 1.97%
  • PriceGrabber - 1.75%
  • Shopping.com - 1.71%
  • Amazon Product Ads - 1.60%
  • Become - 1.57%
  • Shopzilla - 1.43%
  • Bing - 1.35%
  • TheFind - 0.71%

All of our free ecommerce stores here at eSellution come with the ability for users to verify their domain with Google, ensuring all their products appear not only within the various shopping channels we provide, but also appear within the Google product search section. While this on its own will not ensure that your business achieves wide brand awareness, it should definitely be included in an marketing strategy you plan on implementing.

Behavioral targeting and why your business needs it

With the vast number of online stores looking to draw customers to their website through cheap products and offers, exploring ways in which you can bring customers to your website is going to make the difference between your store is successful or not. One of the ways to encourage customers to return to your store in order to make a repeat purchase is through behavioral targeting.

There are a number of different types behavioral targeting available for a business which are based on keywords typed in to a search engine, content read by users and websites a person has visited. However, the most important part of behavioral targeting for a business is retargeting.

How does it work?

When a customer visits your ecommerce store and begins browsing the products you have for sale, the information regarding which products they have looked at is then stored within the data for that particular browser. When this user visits different websites, this is where retargeting kicks in. Even if the website they are viewing has nothing to do with your business or the products you have for sale, your items will still appear within the banners of the site. This will then expose the customer to the products in your store that the user would be interested in. For example, if the customer visited your store and viewed a pair of shoes, the retargeting advertisement will show all other shoes in your store that are similar to the original pair they viewed. This then gives them the option to click on the advert and be taken directly to your website to make a purchase.

Benefits of retargeting

There are a number of different reasons why retargeting is an important tool for any business, big or small:

  • It allows you to increase the reach that your business and products are having. Even if a customer makes a purchase from your store and then never returns or views another advertising promotion you run, they will still become aware of your products through retargeting.
  • The real benefit for any small business is that it improves your advertising performance by reducing your waste and increasing your ROI. Unlike other advertising methods, retargeting ensures that the customers your adverts appear to will definitely have an interest in what you are selling as they have already previously viewed them. This means that you will have a greater chance of drawing them to your website and will result in a much higher conversion rate than you previously had.
  • Even if a customer decides that they don't wish to purchase an item from your store, the fact that your products have appeared in their browser through rebranding means that they have gained further exposure to your business and products, increasing your brand image.

When running a small business, it can often be difficult to stand out from the rest and draw in the customers you need to keep your business afloat. Retargeting can be an affordable way to not only help increase your brand awareness, but improve your conversion rate by bringing back customers who already have an interest in what you have to sell.

However, don't just rely on retargeting as your only advertising method. While this is a great way to bring customers back to your store, you must first use other advertising techniques to draw them to your site for the first time. Read 'The complete small business guide to marketing' to find out about other marketing methods you can use to advertise your products to users.

How to follow in eBay's steps with a business revamp

In the wake of eBay's new logo revamp after 17 years, have you ever thought about giving your own online store a redesign in order to help increase sales or develop a new image?

When selling online keeping up with your competitors in product pricing, service and layout in all important. If you have great products but a poor brand image, it simply doesn't matter how good your products are, people just won't visit your store. However, the image of your business isn't just the layout of your website; it's also the logo, advertisements, blogs, social media, pretty much anything that is available for the public to see. Whether you run an eBay store or another ecommerce store, refreshing your overall look can play a large part in helping give your business a new lease of life. So if you have decided that you think your business needs freshening up, where do you start?

Well before you make any drastic changes, you first need to look at how your business is currently performing. While you personally may have grown bored with how your website looks, if the site is effective in generating customers and achieving a high conversion rate, it may be a case where the effectiveness should outweigh your own personal taste. What I mean by this is that if it's not broke, don't fix it. The next factor you should consider is how drastic do you want your redesign to be and could it potentially alienate some of your current customers. Sometimes a business will look to have a complete overhaul by not just changing the website and logo, but also changing the name of the business. If you decide to do this, you need to make sure that your old customers are aware that your new business is essentially your old business, just with a different name. The last thing you want to do is lower the total number of sales your redesigned business will achieve as some of your old dedicated customers were unaware that your business is now under a new name.

The easiest way to solve this is to carry out two simple tasks:

  • Send out an email to your current customer list, informing them of your redesign. This means giving them all the information they will require such as the new name and URL of your ecommerce store so that they cna easily access it. You may also wish to offer them some sort of relaunch promotion to help further entice them to your store.
  • Use your old web domain as a landing page to your new site. While you have left your old address form a new home, you don't simply want to leave it with no ties at all. This will just result in customers visiting your old website, finding nothing there and being left with no place to go. Using the old web domain as a landing page ensures that even if a customer is unaware of your rebranding, they will still be able to access your new site when they visit your old one.
Now while a complete rebranding is very much at the extreme end of the spectrum, you may decide that they are just one or two minor aspects of your business that you would like to freshen up.

Website Layout - Probably the best way to give your online store a new lease of life. This means changing the colour scheme, design and also the layout of your store, making it much mire inviting for your customers, but also easier for them to find the products they would like to purchase.
Introducing New Stock - If you find that your sales have declined in recent months, you may look to try and increase the number of customers who would be interested in your products by offering a completely new line of products for sale. However, when introducing a number of new products to your store, you need to make sure that they still have something to do with what you currently sell as it will just create a confused brand image. What I mean is that if you are a company that sells sporting goods, you don't want to add a new produce line selling gardening equipment.
New Logo Design - If you have had your new logo for a while, you may look to take a leaf out of eBay's book and create a new one. When deciding how to change your logo you may design to just give the current design a more modern look, or you simply may decide to create a new one from scratch. If you do decide to make a completely new logo, like I mentioned earlier in regard to a full rebranding, you need to make sure that your customers are still able to relate the new logo to your current business.
Blog - Very much one of the lesser forms of rebranding, but could allow you to drastically increase your search engine ranking. In terms of an overhaul for your blog, I don't really mean change the design layout, although this is one thing you can look to do. What I mean is that you may change both what your blog articles are written about and how many people contribute to them. Broadening your blog subject, when combined with a number of additional or guest bloggers, gives you the ability to broaden your audience base, enabling you to produce more content over a set period, increasing your readership as a result.
Social Media - While you cannot redesign the look of your social media accounts as you are working within the set boundaries of that social media channel, you can look to reinvigorate your social media accounts by changing your overall strategy. If your number of followers or overall engagement is lower than you would have liked, you should look to change how often you post content, what content you post and how you interact with your followers in order to give yourself a more established social media presence. If you are looking to play a bigger role in your business's social media output, read our recent post 'Beginners guide to social media' for a few simple tips about what you can post on your social media site to engage with your customers.
Advertising Content - If you decide that you would like to redesign either your logo or your website layout, you must make sure that all your advertising content such as banners and other material are designed to match. This may mean adding a new logo or changing the colours on the banners so that they match the colour scheme you have chosen for your website. Having your old banners and content out there on forums, social media sites and other areas creates a confused identity for your business as you will seemingly have two different public images.

Looking at the bigger picture when it comes to advertising

When setting up an online store, while the products themselves are going to be what ultimately makes a customer's mind up as whether they make a purchase or not, you can help nudge them in the right direction by having the right promotional material.

If your ecommerce store is running a special offer or has recently added new products to it's inventory, you may look to create some promotional material to help drive traffic to your site. This material will generally come in the form of banner advertisements. These banner advertisements can be placed on your ecommerce store to not only make it look more inviting, but also help develop your overall brand image.

While placing these banners on your store's home page is a must, you should also look to place them in a number of different places, such as all of your social media platforms and any forums that are related to what your business sells. However, you will generally find that to place a banner on a forum, you must have some form of sponsorship with the site. Although this generally isn't too expensive, it's up to you to decide whether it is right for your business.

Although, some people may be able to create their own banners, others may just not have the time or the capabilities to develop one to the standard that your business requires. If you are someone in the latter, you can look to pay an ecommerce or design business to create a banner solely for your business. While you may think that creating a banner is a cost you can't afford to make when your business is just starting out, it is a great way to help generate traffic and sales for your site, allowing people to access your site who may not have become aware of your business through other methods.

Looking at the bigger picture

It isn't the cost you should look at, it's the potential return on your investment that the banner will bring. For example, if you have a banner created for £100 and you sell products from your store for £25, the banner only needs to bring in 4 sales for you to get back the money you paid for the banner. In the bigger picture that isn't much and when you factor in the added sales the banners could bring in through social and mobile commerce, it's definitely an avenue that any business should be looking to explore in order to develop their brand image and sales. Like all aspects of online selling, the key is to look at the biggest picture as look at what the investment will return rather than focussing on how much it will cost. As the old saying goes: "You have to spend money to make money."

The complete small business guide to marketing

So you've took the big plunge and have decided to give online selling a go. You have selected what it is you want to sell, who your target customers are and have completely set up your online store. Now that everything is set up and ready to go, the next step is to actually make customers aware of your store's existence. This is where marketing comes in to play.

In today's ecommerce world, the number of different marketing strategies you can look to undertake are substantial. While some are more effective than others, each should be carried out to ensure you bring as many customers as you possibly can to your ecommerce store.

Email Marketing

Really this is the bread and butter of marketing. No matter what your online business is and what services or products you provide, this is something you should be looking to do on a regular basis. When sending out an email marketing campaign, you should be aware that not everyone of those recipients will even open the email, let alone click on the link to access your store. A successful email campaign will have around a 15% open rate and a 1% to 1.5% click through rate. This will mean that around 10% of all the people who are opening the email are actually clicking through to your store. Although this doesn't seem like much, if you are sending out the email to around 15,000 customers for example, it means you are going to get 2,250 people open the email and around 150-225 people click on a link and visit your online store.

What you don't want to do is simply send out the same email time and time again to various customers. The key to a successful email marketing campaign is to develop and refine each email based on the previous campaign to ensure you achieve the best possible success. For example, if your last email campaign had a low click through rate, on your next email you may look to include more links to your store within the email or change the message to one that may be more appealing to your audience.

Social Media Marketing

Has become probably the most popular form of marketing due to the number of potential customers you can reach. While many people use this platform to develop social commerce for their business, creating your own business fan page can be just as effective. As you gain followers to your social media page, you then share content with your followers giving them information about the products you have on sale as well as any sales or offers you are running, providing them with constant direct links to your site.

When a customer finds a product on your website that they like the look of, they can then share this product on various social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest. This then allows a whole new audience who hasn't even visited your online store to see some of the products you have for sale. This is a great way to develop not only your customer base, but your brand, allowing a substantial audience to become aware of your store in a short space of time. While email marketing may be the first subject I have touched upon in this article, social media should be your first port of call for any new business. You will then be able to send out an email campaign, providing links in the email not only to your web store, but also to your various social media platforms.

Forums Interaction

No matter what it is your online store provides, there will be numerous forums out there specifically dedicated to that specific category. When setting up your online store, you should then visit these forums and begin engaging with the community. It's no good just going on and creating a thread about your business as most forums frown against self promotion and your post will be quickly deleted. What you need to do is interact with the community by offering advice and suggestions to other users posts. When doing this there is no harm is telling a user about your online store if it is something that will help them make a more informed decision. For example, if a user has created a post asking people to recommend them a good store to buy clothing products from, if your store sells clothes, you call tell them about your store as well as providing links for users to access. This way you are not only advertising your store to the person who created the thread, but also to all of the people who then view the thread.

Another way to advertise yourself on forums is to include all the links to your business both on your profile and in your forum signature. That way, even if you post on a thread that has nothing to do with your business, people will be able to see information and links to your store through your signature.

Telephone Marketing

This is something that may not be achievable, it all depends on the size of your business. Clearly, if it is just you running your own online business then you are going to be unable to have the time to carry out telephone marketing. If your ecommerce business is big enough that you are able to employ someone to carry out telesales then it could be a good marketing avenue depending on the skills of the salesman. What this means essentially is ringing up various people to inform them about the products and services you offer and how they can get involved. What you need to remember is that the conversion rate for this form of marketing is extremely low. Some days you may ring hundreds of people and only find a small handful that are interested in what you are selling.

Mobile Marketing

With the increasing popularity of mobile commerce, the power of mobile marketing has grown leaps and bounds in the last few years. Although creating a mobile version of your ecommerce store is incredibly important in taking advantage of this selling platform, you should also look at how you can increase your sales with mobile marketing. The main form of mobile marketing comes as SMS marketing. This is rather similar to email marketing but rather than sending the message to a users email address, you are sending it to their phone as a text message. However, with SMS marketing you cannot use HTML or images, only basic text. Also, the space you have for your message is much less meaning your message needs to be sharp and concise. Depsite these negatives when compared to email marketing, its greatest strength comes in the awareness it creates. Unlike an email, as soon as the person receives the SMS, they are instantly exposed to the message it contains. While many people instantly delete emails they think are spam, very few people will delete any text message they receive on their phone without first opening it up to look at it. What this means is that even if the person decides to delete your message within seconds after opening up, your message and brand is still gaining much more exposure than you would have originally done has the message been via email.

To run an SMS marketing campaign you must employ the services of an SMS marketing company. You will then provide them with the message you would like to send out to readers and they will then distribute the message to various mobile phones on your behalf. The amount it will cost you depends on how many people you want the message to be sent to. Many companies charge around 5p per message that is sent out.

Blogging

While this isn't a conventional marketing channel, it is a great way to not only increase your websites standing in search engines, but also make your brand aware to a large audience. The articles which you produce for your blog should be ones that are to do with subjects that are related to your business (just like this one), they shouldn't just simply be sales pitches. However, there is nothing wrong with providing links at the end of the article giving users information about products and services which may be related to the content of the article. For example, if you run an electronics store, you may write an article on the difference between LCD, LED and plasma televisions. At the end of the article you may then provide a link to the section of your online store which will allow users to view the latest sales and offers you have on those TVs.

Offline Marketing

While your store sells exclusively online, you shouldn't only be marketing your business online. Offline marketing has a number of different tools which can help increase sales and drastically improve your brand awareness. However, you will generally find that most successful forms of offline marketing cost substantially more than their online counterparts. There are a number of different offline marketing methods such as:

  • Radio Advertising - One of the most expensive forms of marketing as your message will be sent to literally hundreds of thousands of people. As this has a broad audience, it will depend on what you sell as to how successful this platform will be for your business. If the service or products you offer are only aimed at a specific niche group, then you may find that radio advertising might not be too successful.
  • Magazine Advertising - A better platform for those businesses who may offer niche services and products as you will be able to advertise your business in a magazine that is specifically to do with your business. For example, if you sell fishing equipment, you will be able to advertise your products and services in various fishing magazines, meaning that you ensure that people who read those magazines will be interested in what you have to sell.
  • Posters - A very basic form of marketing, but one which doesn't cost much to do. This involves creating a poster and then visiting local establishments to ask if it would be okay for you to put your advert up in their window. The poster should contain concise information about what it is your store offers and contact details as to how they can access your store online to make a purchase.
  • Networking Events - These are both local and national events where you can attend in order to take part is various seminars or network with other business owners. When attending these events it may be a good idea to have some business cards created with your name, store name, contact information and store URL on them. That way, when you introduce yourself to other people, you will be able to give them your business card, allowing you to make a more lasting impression. If you are business to business store then attending these events is of vital importance to ensure that you are increasing your brand and also making the initial relationships needed to help your store grow.
  • Television Advertising -Probably the most expensive form of marketing that you can have. The price you will pay is dependant on which television channel you want the advert to appear on as certains will have larger audiences. Television also allows you to create a more indepth advert than other methods, allowing you to provide more information as well as making it more entertaining. This is the best way to create your own brand identity but it is something that should only be undertaken once you have built up a good customer base. Essentially this is a marketing tool you should only use once you have achieved success in all other areas.

Boost your business with hashtags

If you are someone who uses Twitter in order to promote content produced by your online business such as blog posts and advertising Tweets, you can increase the audience for your content with the use of hashtags.

Hashtags allow you to group your content to a specific category, meaning that when a Twitter user searches for a category, if your Tweet has that searched for hashtag within it, your Tweet will be displayed to them no matter where they are in the world, whether they are following you or not.

If you are a small online store or an ecommerce business looking to advertise your brand to a wide audience, hashtags are a great way to get your content seen by people who you may not have been able to reach through other marketing methods. What's more, the fact that these people are using this hashtag means that they may already be interested in the various products or service your business provides.

There is no limit on what you can have as a hashtag. However, you need to remember that if the hashtag is really obscure, the likelihood is that no one else will be using it, which means that no one will see your Tweet through the hashtag. A good place to start when selecting hashtags for your Tweets, is to simply use that hashtag that relates to what it is your ecommerce store sells. For example, if you sell electronic goods, use the hashtag "#electronics" on your Tweets.

There are a number of other popular hashtags that small businesses should look to use to help improve their identity and gain followers. These hashtags include "#ecommerce," "#SMEs" and "#business." These hastags are generally popular and will result in people outside your followers being able to see your related tweets.

Twitter marketing to improve customer targeting

Twitter released a new marketing tool yesterday that allows advertisements to be sorted into different categories of interest. For example, if you run an online store that sells electronic goods, your advertisement will be tagged under "electronics."

Once the advertisement has been sorted into the correct category, the advertisement will then begin appearing on the Twitter feeds of those users who tweet content that is related to the specific category. This allows an ecommerce store to improve their targeting by aiming their advertising content solely at those who would have a genuine interest in what you sell.

Furthermore, businesses who use Twitter's "promoted tweets" feature to have their content appear on various users Twitter feeds will also be able to use this form or targeting to ensure that they only spend money promoting their Tweets to users who they know will have an interest in their products.

So what does this mean for small businesses?

Well straight away it makes promoting your Tweets to other users a much more viable and cost effective way for a business to get their brand identity up and running. Before, small businesses couldn't really afford to spend money promoting Tweets when they might not actually go to people who would in interested in the products or services that the business offers. This way you are getting much more for your money as you know that your content will definitely be seen by people who have shown an interest in that category and would most likely be interested in purchasing from your store.

and what does it mean for Twitter?

The changes to Twitter's advertising setup is expected to help their annual revenue total double to over $540 million in 2014, according to figures published by eMarketer.

Out of the box advertising

With the sheer number of people looking to set up online ecommerce stores, the ability to make yourself stand out from the rest is becoming increasingly harder. While we have looked at the traditional forms of small business advertising in recent weeks, to help increase your reach to customers, maybe it's time for your business to think outside the box and try marketing ideas that you previously may not have considered.

Provide free products

Now before you start thinking that I've gone mad, I'm not suggesting you start giving out products to everyone for free, but what you could do is offer incentives to customers when they make a purchase. What I mean is that you could offer to give customers a specific item when they make a purchase over a certain amount. The product you choose to give your customers should be something that they would want but it shouldn't be something too expensive as you obviously don't want to lose money on the sale.

Customers select your products

What this form of promotion could involve is you putting a number of different items on to your store's social media pages, for customers to then vote on. The product with the highest number of votes would then be added to your store for customers to purchase. This is a great promotion for two different reasons. Firstly, it encourages customers to actually interact with your store, increasing your number of social media followers and creating better relationships for with your customers. Secondly and probably most importantly, it means you are adding a product your store that you know will be of interest to your customers.

Customer loyalty rewards

The more products a customer purchases from your store, the more loyalty points the receive. Once the customer gains a certain number of points they receive an email or some form of contact from your store letting them know that they have gained a reward. This reward could come in store credit, a percentage off a product or free delivery on certain items. What this does is make the customer feel valued, meaning they will return to your store time and time again.

Carry out a charity based promotion

Create a promotion whereby every sale that is made in your store, a certain percentage of the transaction will go to a local charity. While this will mean you make less on each item sold, the popularity in sales this will generate will mean that you make more sales, take in more money, while helping out a local charity. Any work you can do in helping a charity or foundation is going to be fantastic PR, making more people aware of your business and increasing the likelihood that they will visit your store.

While these are simple ideas, it is the simple ideas that small businesses sometimes overlook as they go in search of grand promotion ideas to radically boost traffic and sales to their online store. Sometimes, it is doing the simple things well that is going to be the difference between success and failure, rather than looking to do the biggest promotion possible.

Facebook Advertising to Market Your Business

Facebook have recently decided to launch their own service, 'Facebook Exchange' that allows businesses to advertise on Facebook. Despite the obvious popularity of Facebook some people may still ask, how beneficial is Facebook advertising actually going to be for my buisness? The answer is very beneficial!

With reportedly over 500 million daily users on the social networking site, the opportunity to promote your ecommerce business is substantial. However, if you decide that your business should embark on the Facebook Exchange, who will actually see your advertisement?

How Facebook Exchange Works

When a Facebook user visits an external third party site, the cookies for that site are marked by Facebook Exchange. Then, when the user next visits Facebook, advertisements will appear along the side of the various Facebook page advertising products and services similar to the page external page you previously viewed.

How Do You Get Your Business to be on Facebook Exchange?

If a business is looking to have their advert appear on Facebook, they will hire Demand Side Platform (DSP) company. A DSP is a company that communicates with Facebook allowing a business to customise their performance indicators such as target audience and cost per click. They also allow a business to bid on specific ads that relate to your business. However, competition for these ad slots are incredibly high with a number of different companies all attempting to get them. The company who has bid the highest amount for the advert slot that relates to the users third party website will get their advert placed on Facebook.

The real problem with advertising on Facebook is that users will always have the option to opt-out of having a specific Facebook Exchange adverts appear on their Facebook page. This means that you could have a number of people visit websites that relate to your business, but if they have opted out your advert previously, it will not appear on their page no matter how much you have bid for the slot.

Despite this potential negative, the positives of using Facebook Exchange are huge. This is underlined by the fact that Facebook are predicted to increase their advertising revenue this year by 60% to over $5 billion.
