Amazon announce UK sales figures...and they may surprise a few

Recently, online marketplace giants Amazon have been making a number of headlines here in the UK, along with other global brands such as Starbucks and Google, after a number of questions by the British Members of Parliament regarding the amount they have been paying as their UK tax.

According to written evidence published on the Parliament website, Amazon have released sales figures for the last three years, including the amount they in UK VAT. In 2009, 2010 and 2011, Amazon had net sales in the UK of £1.65 billion, £2.36 billion and £2.91 billion respectively. This resulted in them paying £172 million, £262 million and £416 million in VAT.

While this is a significant amount in terms of generated revenue, to many people, this is much less than they were expecting. With a number of large brand retailers in the UK doing well in excess of £8 billion in sales last year, it puts into perspective that the success of Amazon isn't as great as many people have previously thought.

As there seems to be a constant battle for supremacy between Amazon and eBay for online marketplace success, with Amazon's yearly sales much lower than many expected, it begs the question is eBay equally as over hyped as Amazon seems to be? or is eBay in fact head and shoulders above the rest in terms of generating sales through their online marketplace?

We shall just have to wait and see...

Plenty on offer for you from eBay this weekend

eBay are running a promotion this weekend offering free listings to private sellers in an attempt to increase the number of products on the marketplace in the run up to Christmas.

Private sellers will be able to place 100 auction style listings with a starting price of £1 or more for free. However, any feature fees will still apply. The promotion is only available on the eBay.co.uk website and in order to take part, you must have a registered address in the UK.

Also, those who use various listing tools will be excluded from the promotion, as will those products listed in the "Cars, Motorcycles & Vehicles" category.

The free private listing promotion gets under way on Saturday 24th November at 00:00:01am and will last until Sunday 25th November at 23:59:59pm.

The promotion is a great way for users who have never used eBay to give the platform a try by listing a few items which then may encourage them to possible open up an eBay store in the future.

Sunday Spectacular

Don't forget to take part in another Sunday spectacular from eBay this weekend, that will see up to 75% off a variety of products. The sale has been running the last few Sundays and has proved to be a great success up to this point, with millions of people getting involved.

The sale kicks of at 8am sharp.

Two new features to help boost eBay sales

eBay this week announced two new features that they believe will help boost the sales of those running an eBay store; Item Condition Notes and Multi Variation Merger application.

The Item Condition Notes feature allows you to place important information regarding a product at the top of the listing page. In the past many online sellers have had buyers complain that the item they purchased was not as described, simply due to the fact that the buyer hadn't read the item description properly and had overlooked key aspects.

The new notes feature eliminates this problem by ensuring that a customer is able to see all of the key information regarding the product right at the top of the listing, ensuring they have all the facts before deciding  whether to make the purchase. This will help not only increase the number of sales a store achieves by keeping the buyer more informed, it will also most likely result in the number of returns decreasing.

The second new feature from eBay, the Multi Variation Merger tool, allows sellers to create multiple variation listings based on a single listing and what's more, it's all for a single listing fee. While this has already been seen on a number of different categories across eBay, it has only recently been added to the category where it will be most important; fashion.

Not only will this feature allow you to achieve more sales, it will also allow you to reduce your costs as you can combine, size, colour and any other variations on a product into one listing, rather than having to create separate listings for each variation.

Sellers will also be able to use the tool to keep the Best Match score that you have with individual listings while also allows you to achieve increased visibility for some of the listings you have that haven't performed as well in the past.

It's going to be a mobile Christmas

According to figures published by online marketplace giants eBay, it looks like running around shopping centres on Christmas Eve looking for those last minute Xmas presents are soon to be a thing of the past as they expect eBay mobile transactions to exceed £10 billion for the year after a 200 percent year on year increase in Q3.

However, this increase in purchases through mobile devices isn't purely through smartphones, eBay's applications can be used to various phone and tablet devices, opening up a whole new number of ways for buyers to easily complete their transactions on an eBay store. With more advanced tablets and smartphones, such as the iPhone 5, released on a regular basis, buyers making their purchases through these devices is going to increase more and more as the years go on until we get to the point where is makes up the vast majority of all sales.

From the perspective of an ecommerce store, this underlines the necessity for a store to have a fully optimised mobile store, enabling you to take advantage of some of the customers venturing into mobile commerce, with over 2.5 million people shopping on a mobile store for the first time on eBay alone.

From eBay with love

If you missed out on eBay's Sunday Spectacular last weekend don't worry, judging from information on eBay's site it looks like they will be running another one this weekend.

The sale event will begin on Sunday 18th November at 8am and will last for the entire day. The offer boasts up to 75% off RRP, but is only limited to one purchase per deal.

Last Sunday's sale saw a surge in sales across the marketplace with all of the products within the promotion, such as iPads, iPhones and other equipment selling out quickly.

For an eBay store not part of the promotion but sells similar products to those within eBay's Sunday Spectacular, if you were planning on running an early Christmas promotion this weekend you may want to leave it until another time as you may find it difficult to compete with some of the prices that will be on offer for buyers this weekend.

For all buyers it's a case of set your alarm clocks for early Sunday morning to make sure that you take advantage of all these promotions before they quickly run out.

eBay revamp Top Seller status

eBay have released a brand new badge for some of it's top rated sellers that meet a specific set of requirements.

The badge will begin appearing on eBay store owners who have not only have the usual top rated seller requirements, but also offer no more than a 1 day handling time and a money-back returns policy of at least 14 days.

If you are an eBay seller who is currently a top rated seller, you need to update both your policies and your overall purchasing system to ensure that you now reach these new requirements. If you are someone is the sole worker for their business, reducing handling time can often be difficult due to the influx of orders you receive  especially over the Christmas period. To try and give yourself the best chance of achieving as low a handling time as you possibly can, ensure you have the basics covered.

These basics include:

  • Having your packaging system all set up and ready
  • Drafting in help if orders get too much
  • Make sure you have enough stock to cover all orders
  • Get the products to the couriers in time for one-business day handling

Achieving the top seller ranking will not only make your profile look nicer with a bright new crest on your eBay templates, but it will also instil confidence in your customers, increasing the chances of them not only visiting your store, but making a purchase.

eBay's much anticipated International selling feature up and running

eBay have launched their International Rate Card for eBay store owners who are currently on eBay's Anchor Shop package.

In the past, whenever a seller has decided that they want to sell Internationally, they had to list each of their products as being available for overseas customers to purchase it. However, the new International Seller Rate Card allows sellers to list their products directly on to a number of different eBay sites within Europe and in Australia.

This means that rather than a buyer having to come to the eBay UK site and purchasing from there as an International purchaser, the buyer can simply view it on their country's own eBay site as long as they are based in one of the countries within the International Seller Rate Card package. As an eBay seller, it will allow you to dramatically increase the number of users your products are exposed to, most likely resulting in an increase in sales.

If you are an eBay seller who would like to take advantage of this new feature, you must upgrade your eBay account to the Anchor Shop package at £349.99 a month and then tick the box to "Opt in to eBay International Selling."

To apply to be part of this new International selling feature you must be a top rated seller. However, should you lose your top rated seller status once you have been accepted, you will not lose access to the feature. Any sales made Internationally will also not affect the Detailed Seller Rating (DSR) that you have in the UK.

Before taking the plunge and upgrading your account to an anchor package, you need to first crunch the numbers in order to make sure that it will be the right move for your business. If you are not already on the anchor shop package you need to check how much you are paying based on the number of products you are listing in the UK as well as how much you are paying to list products on other International sites. For many eBay stores this will be the right move as many businesses are currently paying more than £349.99.

When branching out to International markets, you also may want to look at how you can use ecommerce software to also increase the number of channels your ecommerce store operates in, allowing you to develop your brand image and increase sales. We at eSellution offer a number of different packages to suit all online sellers, ranging from a free ecommerce store to our  Enterprise package.

eBay's Weekend Promotion Offer

Another week and another free listing promotion offer from eBay. The promotion allows sellers listing fixed price listing to add up to 5,000 listing without having to pay any listing fees.

The promotion starts today (November 8th) and will run until the end of Sunday, meaning that every fixed listing placed on their ecommerce store by the invited seller over this period will not have the standard $0.50 listing fee. eBay are using this promotion to remind their sellers about the ability to use their mobile application in order to list products.

However, the promotion is only available to sellers who have been specifically invited by eBay as well as only being available to listings placed on the eBay.com website.

In the past some people who were invited to the promotion simply didn't know because for some unknown reason their email notification were lost in transit. For this reason, even if you don't find an invitation in your inbox, you should still check to see if you have been added to this promotion.

For sellers who are using any listing tool other than "Sell Your Item" the promotion rate will be shown in your "View Account Status" and on the seller's invoice rather than being visible during the listing process.

Stuff by eBay - Good idea or invasion of privacy?

eBay are testing a new email platform that they have created called "Stuff by eBay." The tool uses your email address registered to your eBay account to search through all of the emails you have ever received and then picks out all the purchases. The tool them provides you with a list of every single purchase you have ever made online.

According to Ziv Meltzer, the creator of the Stuff by eBay tool said that the tool "scans email receipts that merchants sent you after you have made a purchase." Meltzer also has also said that the only emails that are scanned are these from the merchants and no other.

The idea behind the new tool is to give users one centralised location where you can organise all of the information regarding all of the purchases you have made online. This means you will be able to see invoices, reciepts, policy information and everything else that you could possibly think of when making a purchase. The tool also allows you to share your purchases with your friends across various social media platforms.

Although this is a good idea if you regularly purchase online, in a world where online security is paramount, many people may be hesitant to give a tool access to their own personal email account that most likely contains other information emails, not just purchase notifications. Furthermore, the fact that the platform is powered by Slice begs the questions as to why they didn't launch the tool themselves, but instead under the eBay name to increase it's levels of trust with online buyers.

The tool is currently in the beta testing page and is available at http://stuff.ebay.com

The strangest things sold on eBay and lessons to be learnt

As eBay is one of the biggest shopping marketplaces on the web with literally millions of transactions being carried out on a regular basis, there are bound to be a few of those exchanges that are stranger others. We at eSellution have looked at some of the strangest transactions ever to grace eBay's online platform and what lessons ecommerce stores learn from them.

Michael Jackson's Underwear - A pair of Michael Jackson's Calvin Klein underwear that were seized in 2003 during his child molestation case were placed on eBay with a reserve of $1 million. Unsurprisingly, with the number of followers "M"J has around the world, the boxers were soon sold.

Rhino Dung - In an attempt to try and raise some much needs the International Rhino Foundation decided that they would try their hand at selling rhino dung online. As you would have guessed, the initiative didn't raise the funds they expected.

Hi-Tech Toilet - Originally bought by the city of Seattle for $5 million, the toilets were placed on eBay after becoming a popular hang out for drug users. Sadly, they came no where near getting their money back as the toilets sold for a mere $12,549, resulting in a $4,987,451 loss.

A Texas Town - The small Texas town of Albert was listed for sale on eBay, boasting "German heritage and a laid-back attitude." The listing also came with the Mayor of Albert title for the recipient.

An Australian Man's Life - Yup, exactly what it says on the tin. After becoming f A man in Australia sold his life on eBay for a total of   £192,000. This included his home, all the possessions it contained, all of his vehicles and everything else he had to his name. It also included his job meaning his boss probably got a big surprise Monday morning with someone else showed up.

Brussel Sprouts - Getting into the Christmas spirit, a man in England placed brussel sprouts cooked on Christmas day onto the online marketplace. They managed to fetch £99.50 and the proceeds went to charity.

Ghost In A Jar - A seller decided to place what he claimed was a ghost in a jar after stating that it was terrorising the owner. The item was eventually sold for $50,922 but it seemed the buyer came to their senses and decided not to pay.

Grandma - A 10 year old girl fed up with her Grandma decided that she would place the 61 year old up for sale on eBay. Despite having a few bids on the listing, described as "annoying but cuddly" eBay stepped in and shut down the listing as it violated their policy on human trafficking.

As this is an article looking at sales made on eBay, we will end with the first ever sale made on the marketplace, previously titled "AuctionWeb" creator Pierre Omidyar decided to test the listing service by placing a broken laser pointer. To Pierre's surprise, the listing received a bid of $14.83 and was subsequently sold.

Lessons to be learnt

While pretty much all of these listings are strange in the extreme, they do show any business that no matter what it is they sell, there are people out there who will be interested in their products. For an ecommerce store, success comes in being able to identify which specific type of people will be interested in what you have to sell and marketing your products to this demographic accordingly to achieve the best best level of sales you can.

If all else fails you can follow in the footsteps of some of the more eccentric sellers listed above and literally try and sell the strangest thing you can possibly think of.

eBay and Paypal supporting Hurricane Sandy victims

After Hurricane Sandy brought untold damage to the eastern coast of the United States, killing over 50 people in the US alone in the last week and over 130 people in total. To try and help these people who have had their lives turned upside down by the disaster, eBay Giving Works and Paypal have teamed up to try and provide some relief to the victims.

eBay have launched their own Hurricane Sandy site and Paypal have started a disaster relief campaign, both allowing users to pledge a donation to go towards the relief efforts. Like many donation efforts that eBay have run in the past, online sellers can pledge a percentage of a sold item anywhere from 10% to 100%.

Currently over 1,900 sellers have pledged a donation to the relief effort through the sale of over 18,000 items.

Paypal's Hurricane Sandy relief site allows users to pledge donations to one of four different organisations; American Red Cross, The Humane Society, Team Rubicon and The Salvation Army. Paypal are also waiving any fees they usually charge on a donation pledged by any user.

eBay announce new platform for petrolheads

eBay announced yesterday the launch of their new platform aimed at car enthusiasts called eBay Garage.

The platform is geared towards creating a community of people who have a passion for cars, bikes and other vehicles, allowing them to share images, view statistics and also view other people's cars. As this is part of the eBay marketplace, users will also be able to buy and sell a range of automotive parts and accessories.

eBay Garage will be following a similar patter to eBay's previous "My Vehicles" section allowing users to view other people's profiles, share tips of all things automotive and ask each other questions about vehicles they own or parts they have for sale.

To get a better idea of the eBay Garage platform, check out a promotion video that was released by eBay on their eBay Ink Blog website.

An alternative to eBay Gallery Plus that will save you money

eBay Gallery Plus works by having a larger zoomed in image when a user moves their cursor over a product image on the search results page. The benefit of this being that a potential customer is able to see the product you have for sale in greater details, enticing them to select your product to purchase.

However, while you may think this is a good feature, the problem arises in terms of how much it will cost the user. While some of eBay's categories offer this feature as a free addition to their listings, many don't, meaning that more often than not, you will have to pay the $0.75 when you list your product and when you list 1000's of products in your ecommerce store, the costs soon mount up.

In addition to that, if you have a product that you list in a number of different categories, you will have to pay a fee for eBay Gallery Plus for each category. So for example, if you list a a sports video game, you may decide to have that in the Sports category and the Electronics category, meaning you will need to pay $1.50 to have Gallery Plus added to the listing.

So what's the alternative?

The ecommerce software we provide here at eSellution is not only free in terms of allowing users to set up their online store, Facebook store, mobile store and integrate it all with their eBay accounts, it also allows users to add products to their ecommerce store and then add them to eBay. This means that as the images are on our servers, you won't be required to any image hosting fees to eBay.

In addition to this, all of our ecommerce templates have the zoom in feature added to all of the products, meaning that when a customer moves their cursor over a product image, they are able to see a bigger zoomed in image of that product. You can also export this ecommerce template on to your eBay store, allowing you to improve your business's professional brand image.

If you run an ecommerce store selling a number of different products, being able to avoid paying image hosting fees could save you a substantial amount of money each year. Our free ecommerce store and the services it provides all have no monthly fee, no set up costs and no other hidden charges whatsoever.

Another 50,000 free listings from eBay

As the American Presidential elections roll on, eBay are looking to take advantage of this political hype with yet another free listing promotion.

Running from today up until November 4th, like some of their previous promotions, this promotion is only available to those who have received an invitation. Those who are lucky enough to take part in the promotion are able to list up to 50,000 auction listings without having to pay any listing fees. If you are an ecommerce store who only deals in the "Buy It Now" option, you can still take advantage of this promotion by having the Buy It Now option appear on the auction listings.

As an added incentive to take part in the promotion, eBay are also allowing every listing added to have a total of 12 different pictures for free, allowing you to increase your chances of making a sale by giving the customer a good look at your products.

As the promotion is based around the US elections, the promotion is only available on the ebay.com website. Like all previous eBay free listing promotions, all of the usual terms and conditions apply.

With the promotion already in full swing, make sure you take advantage of your free 50,000 listings before the deadline this Sunday.

eBay break world record

Reading the title of this article you might think that eBay must have broken the record for the biggest online marketplace or the most online sales over a specific period of time? In fact, you're way off. eBay have just broken the record for having the fastest milk float. Yes, you read that right, a milk float.

A few months ago motoring expert Edd China and British Touring Car Championship racer Tom Onslow-Cole were set the challenge by eBay Motors of turning a regular milk float into a racing car, using only the parts they could get off the motoring section of the eBay marketplace.

The pair struck gold when the managed to source a V8 engine from the site, allowing them to truly give this regular milk float a real burst of speed. After months of hard work, scraping together and installing a number of different parts, they tested the milk float at the Transport Research Laboratory in Berkshire and found that the fastest recorded time they achieved was 77.53 mph, a new world record.

Check out a video released by eBay Motors to see all of the action unfold.

Top 10 factors that put customers off your store

A survey recently carried out has discovered the top 10 turn offs for customers when visiting an ecommerce store. They were as follows:

  • Site doesn't look secure - Having a website that not only looks secure but actually is as secure as is possibly can be, is vitally important in the long term success of your business. This means having secure servers to protect your customers information and having a secure payment gateway for them to purchase products for you. If any of these aspects aren't secure, it's going to make customers very reluctant to purchase for your store.

  • Bugs and technical issues with the site - Whatever it is, whether it's an ecommerce store or some other website, if a customer comes across a number of bugs when attempting to purchase from your online store, it is going to harm your perception of being a professional business. Again, this will result in you getting less long term and short term sales.

  • Insufficient images and product information - When a customer looks to purchase a product, before they decide whether to buy it or not, they want to have as much information as they can about the product, allowing them to make a more informed decision. No matter what the product is, it should have a number of images showing the product from different angles as well as displaying all the information they may require such as specification, warranty, delivery options and anything else they may require. Like having an website that doesn't look secure, insufficient details for each product makes your site much less trustworthy.

  • Difficult to use shopping cart - Whether a customer visits your mobile store or ecommerce store, the simpler and easier it is for a customer to buy from your store, the happier they are going to be. If you find that customers are finding your shopping cart difficult to use, why not sign up to our ecommerce software and get a free ecommerce store today. We have developed our shopping cart to ensure it provides not only the best shopping experience possible, but is also easy to use for buyer and seller alike.

  • Checkout form too long and time consuming - Again, as stated in the last section you need to try and make it as quick as possible for customers to purchase products. As you need their personal details to send out the products or to get in touch with them in the future, you have to have some form of contact information. However, to make it as simple as possible you could choose to have the most basic information such as name, email address, delivery address and credit card details.

  • Poorly-designed website - Like an unsecured site or one with bugs or a poor shopping cart, the look of your site is an essential part to your business's overall brand image. If your website doesn't look good, it's going to harm your brand image. Again using eSellution as an example, when working with a number of clients every day, we also ensure that their website is of the highest possible standard in all aspects, to maximise the success they can achieve.

  • Slow website - On average, if a customer has to wait more than 3 seconds for a website to load, they are going to grow frustrated and leave the site altogether. You can imagine how many sales this will result in you missing out on if you have a slow loading website. While you want your online store to be appealing to the naked eye, the more images and content you have, the longer it is going to take to load. However, this problem is a lot more prominent in mobile stores as a mobile phone's 3G capabilities aren't as fast as a standard Internet connect. To improve the speed of your site, there are a number of things you can do such as having a cache system the first time a user visits your store, reducing the amount of images you have on your site or changing the format of your images to ones that are smaller in size.

  • Lack of customer reviews and feedback - The opinions of customers have a huge weighting on whether or not someone decides to purchase from your store, as those using eBay will know all too well. If you have a product on your store which has a number of negative reviews, the likelihood is that your sales for this product will be pretty much non-existent. If you do find that certain products in your store are receiving many negative views, you may want to think about removing that product from your store altogether as it clearly isn't of the standard you want for your business.

  • Retailer based outside of the UK - As they say, you always feel most comfortable when at home and online shopping is no different. If you are based outside of the UK, customers are going to be more hesitant to purchase from you because of a number of different factors such as time it will take to get to them, added cost in shipping and an added price they would have to pay in terms of the conversion rate. If you find that you are a successful ecommerce store looking to achieve success within the UK, you may need to think about creating a branch within the UK, allowing you to overcome all of these concerns that customers have.

  • Insufficient delivery options - Like all aspects of ecommerce shopping, the more options you provide your customers with, the happier they are going to be. As time is as much a crucial factor as price and quality, customers want the option to receive their goods as soon as possible but at an affordable price. When a customer purchases from your store they should be able to have standard delivery within 5 working day, express delivery within 2-3 working days and next day delivery. If you have all of these delivery options covered then you will find that the majority of your customers will be happy.

Online sellers must engage with Christmas shoppers earlier than usual

According eBay's new feature, the advertising barometer, which monitors the shopping trends of many users through the marketplace, most businesses who run an ecommerce store are not acting quick enough in order to take advantage of buyers looking to start their Christmas shopping early.

While these customers are still making a large proportion of their purchases online, many sellers are missing the opportunity to entice these shoppers to buy from their store through special offers, promotions and other marketing campaigns that are aimed specifically at the Christmas shopper.

According to comments from Phoung Nguyen, UK head of eBay Advertising, placed on The Drum: "The Christmas browsing window is expanding; people are starting their Christmas earlier in the year, but leaving it later and later to make purchases."

Although customers may not be making the actual purchases until the latest possible opportunity, online stores who take advantage of this early consumer interest are the ones who are most likely going to see the greatest increase in sales over the Winter months. Essentially, this means you need to get your Christmas range, promotions and other offers out there for people to see at the earliest possible opportunity. However, this doesn't necessarily mean placing them all on your store for customers to browser in the Summer, it could simply mean sending out an email advertising your up and coming Winter range, placing information on your social media sites or developing banners and other advertising content for customers to view.

The earlier you engage with these customers, the more likely you are going to see a huge increase not only in terms of the number of sales you make, but also how much you make from each sale. When a customer is planning their Christmas shopping schedule, they tend to focus on getting the main, larger presents early and then get the smaller gifts at a later date. Although a late marketing campaign will allow you to see an increase in sales through the smaller purchases, it's the larger items you should be looking to see as these will produce the best profit levels.

Although many people still prefer that Christmas Eve shopping spree, the days of running around shopping centres in a mad panic for those last minute Christmas gifts could soon be a thing of the past, as it is thought that by Christmas next year, shopping from the comfort of your own home through mobile commerce will soon make up over 40% of all ecommerce sales.

eBay on the rise and mobile could be the key

Although many eBay sellers are concerned about how the new Cassini search engine will affect their ability to generate traffic and sales, it would seem that the marketplace is going from strength to strength as sales in the US they have seen their year on year Q3 sales rise 16% to $6.48 billion from $5.59 billion.

John Donahoe, eBay's President and CEO, has put this Q3 increase largely down to the growth in mobile commerce: "Mobile continues to be a game changer for us, and we continue to be a clear leader in mobile commerce and payments."

The growth that eBay has seen in their sales figures, particularly through their mobile platform was emphasised last month through the announcement that the total number of eBay apps downloaded and the number of products listed through mobile devices has surpassed the 100 million figure. The growth of mobile commerce over the last year was summed up nicely on eBay's Ink Blog, who stated:

"Mobile commerce is exploding...connecting people to the things they need and love and helping sellers of all sizes in today's rapidly changing world."

As we here a eSellution tell not only our customers, but our reads too, the future of ecommerce store success lies very much in having a mobile friendly store. With many people now shopping not only on smartphones, but also tablet devices, having various stores that appear correctly on various platforms is going to be key to you achieving any future success.

Most ecommerce software package, such as the one we provide here at eSellution, provide users with a number of different platforms for you to sell online, giving you the best possible chance of making your store successful.
