eBay alter new multi variation images policy

eBay has made changes to it multi variation images policy after receiving a number of complaints from eBay store owners.

Recently, eBay made changes to the variation images, displaying a specific variation, such as a certain colour, on the product search results depending on the search query which a user entered. However, many store owners complained about this change as they preferred having the general composite image that showed all of the variations of a product that a store has for sale.

The problem with the multi variation images is that if a buyer doesn't like the look of the product you have for  sale in the specific variation, the likelihood is that they aren't going to know that there are other variations available. This often results in them dismissing your product as a potential purchase and looking for other search results.

According to a statement on eBay's UK general announcements, the new multi variation images will be rolled back on December 5th to the original main share product image on all product searches, across all categories. However, the colour variation images will still be used on colour related searches.

eBay to give buyers real life social shopping experience

From Friday 30th November until Sunday 2nd December, eBay will be running a social media shopping experience in Covent Garden, London as they look to increase interactivity and sales on the online marketplace.

According to some experts, Sunday December 2nd is expected to be the busiest shopping day of the year, as  many people look to get a large amount of their Christmas shopping completed well before the anticipated rush.

The pop up store will contain large screens that will show Facebook, Twitter and Instagram posts which people have placed on the social networking sites of products they have or would like to purchase. It is thought that this will give people an idea of what the more popular gift ideas are this Christmas and encourage them to also purchase these items.

During a visit to the eBay pop up store, users will also be able to download the various eBay mobile applications on to their smartphones and scan product QR codes using a scanner on their smartphones. This ability to scan QR codes will be the most memorable aspect of the pop up store shopping experience as users will be able to view these scanned products in augmented reality, meaning they can view the products as a 3D image.

This augmented reality could soon become a main part of eBay's shopping experience, as the online marketplace believe that this technology could bring a £2.4 billion revenue increase by 2014.

Not the first pop up store

This isn't the first time eBay have tired the idea of running a pop up store. Earlier this month, eBay opened up a pop up store in Toronto, allowing users to browse a variety of items that eBay have placed in the store from the online marketplace place that they believe would be great holiday gifts.

Using a QR scanner on their smartphone, users will then scan the QR code relating to the product in the ebay store, which will then open up the product on the eBay mobile app for the user to purchase online.

These stores launched by eBay are seen as an attempt to increase the use of mobile commerce within it's users, allowing them to develop an ever increasing mobile shopping platform which the marketplace has become heavily invested in.

Two new features to help boost eBay sales

eBay this week announced two new features that they believe will help boost the sales of those running an eBay store; Item Condition Notes and Multi Variation Merger application.

The Item Condition Notes feature allows you to place important information regarding a product at the top of the listing page. In the past many online sellers have had buyers complain that the item they purchased was not as described, simply due to the fact that the buyer hadn't read the item description properly and had overlooked key aspects.

The new notes feature eliminates this problem by ensuring that a customer is able to see all of the key information regarding the product right at the top of the listing, ensuring they have all the facts before deciding  whether to make the purchase. This will help not only increase the number of sales a store achieves by keeping the buyer more informed, it will also most likely result in the number of returns decreasing.

The second new feature from eBay, the Multi Variation Merger tool, allows sellers to create multiple variation listings based on a single listing and what's more, it's all for a single listing fee. While this has already been seen on a number of different categories across eBay, it has only recently been added to the category where it will be most important; fashion.

Not only will this feature allow you to achieve more sales, it will also allow you to reduce your costs as you can combine, size, colour and any other variations on a product into one listing, rather than having to create separate listings for each variation.

Sellers will also be able to use the tool to keep the Best Match score that you have with individual listings while also allows you to achieve increased visibility for some of the listings you have that haven't performed as well in the past.

eBay revamp Top Seller status

eBay have released a brand new badge for some of it's top rated sellers that meet a specific set of requirements.

The badge will begin appearing on eBay store owners who have not only have the usual top rated seller requirements, but also offer no more than a 1 day handling time and a money-back returns policy of at least 14 days.

If you are an eBay seller who is currently a top rated seller, you need to update both your policies and your overall purchasing system to ensure that you now reach these new requirements. If you are someone is the sole worker for their business, reducing handling time can often be difficult due to the influx of orders you receive  especially over the Christmas period. To try and give yourself the best chance of achieving as low a handling time as you possibly can, ensure you have the basics covered.

These basics include:

  • Having your packaging system all set up and ready
  • Drafting in help if orders get too much
  • Make sure you have enough stock to cover all orders
  • Get the products to the couriers in time for one-business day handling

Achieving the top seller ranking will not only make your profile look nicer with a bright new crest on your eBay templates, but it will also instil confidence in your customers, increasing the chances of them not only visiting your store, but making a purchase.

eBay's search changes and how they impact variation listings

This last week eBay have made a number of changes to the way items with multiple variations appear within the search results page. Depending on the type of eBay store you run, these changes could either be positive or negative.

The main difference between the new search results and the old setup is that the products listed within the search results will no longer display multiple variations of a product. For example, if you are selling a clothing item, the search result will no longer display all of the different colour variations that are available. Instead, the result will display the variation image closely matched to the search criteria. For example, if you search for "Red Dress," the search results will show the product image in the variation of red, rather than showing multiple colour variations.

However, the multiple variation feature hasn't been completely removed, just merely hidden. If the user selects "More options" next to the product image, they will be able to see more information about the product which includes the various other variations that the product has.

The main problem people running an ecommerce store are finding with the new search layout is customers incorrectly purchasing an item in the wrong size as, although they have searched for one specific variation, once the system has found this particular product variation, it populates all the other variations randomly. This means that people are then selecting the item thinking it is the right size and instantly "Buy it now" and before the issue has been discovered, the item has already been shipped. Obviously, this is a time consuming and annoying situation for both the buyer and seller.

Also, as eBay picks up variations based on colour, it is strongly advised that the seller be as basic as they possibly can when entering this colour information for each of their products. For example, if your product is "Persian red," it would be better to just simply put it as "red." The reason for this is that very few people will search for Persian red meaning that when they type red into their search parameters, your products are going to appear further down the search results as they do not match the search results as much as other listings above it.

eBay's Weekend Promotion Offer

Another week and another free listing promotion offer from eBay. The promotion allows sellers listing fixed price listing to add up to 5,000 listing without having to pay any listing fees.

The promotion starts today (November 8th) and will run until the end of Sunday, meaning that every fixed listing placed on their ecommerce store by the invited seller over this period will not have the standard $0.50 listing fee. eBay are using this promotion to remind their sellers about the ability to use their mobile application in order to list products.

However, the promotion is only available to sellers who have been specifically invited by eBay as well as only being available to listings placed on the eBay.com website.

In the past some people who were invited to the promotion simply didn't know because for some unknown reason their email notification were lost in transit. For this reason, even if you don't find an invitation in your inbox, you should still check to see if you have been added to this promotion.

For sellers who are using any listing tool other than "Sell Your Item" the promotion rate will be shown in your "View Account Status" and on the seller's invoice rather than being visible during the listing process.

Stuff by eBay - Good idea or invasion of privacy?

eBay are testing a new email platform that they have created called "Stuff by eBay." The tool uses your email address registered to your eBay account to search through all of the emails you have ever received and then picks out all the purchases. The tool them provides you with a list of every single purchase you have ever made online.

According to Ziv Meltzer, the creator of the Stuff by eBay tool said that the tool "scans email receipts that merchants sent you after you have made a purchase." Meltzer also has also said that the only emails that are scanned are these from the merchants and no other.

The idea behind the new tool is to give users one centralised location where you can organise all of the information regarding all of the purchases you have made online. This means you will be able to see invoices, reciepts, policy information and everything else that you could possibly think of when making a purchase. The tool also allows you to share your purchases with your friends across various social media platforms.

Although this is a good idea if you regularly purchase online, in a world where online security is paramount, many people may be hesitant to give a tool access to their own personal email account that most likely contains other information emails, not just purchase notifications. Furthermore, the fact that the platform is powered by Slice begs the questions as to why they didn't launch the tool themselves, but instead under the eBay name to increase it's levels of trust with online buyers.

The tool is currently in the beta testing page and is available at http://stuff.ebay.com

eBay and Paypal supporting Hurricane Sandy victims

After Hurricane Sandy brought untold damage to the eastern coast of the United States, killing over 50 people in the US alone in the last week and over 130 people in total. To try and help these people who have had their lives turned upside down by the disaster, eBay Giving Works and Paypal have teamed up to try and provide some relief to the victims.

eBay have launched their own Hurricane Sandy site and Paypal have started a disaster relief campaign, both allowing users to pledge a donation to go towards the relief efforts. Like many donation efforts that eBay have run in the past, online sellers can pledge a percentage of a sold item anywhere from 10% to 100%.

Currently over 1,900 sellers have pledged a donation to the relief effort through the sale of over 18,000 items.

Paypal's Hurricane Sandy relief site allows users to pledge donations to one of four different organisations; American Red Cross, The Humane Society, Team Rubicon and The Salvation Army. Paypal are also waiving any fees they usually charge on a donation pledged by any user.

eBay announce new platform for petrolheads

eBay announced yesterday the launch of their new platform aimed at car enthusiasts called eBay Garage.

The platform is geared towards creating a community of people who have a passion for cars, bikes and other vehicles, allowing them to share images, view statistics and also view other people's cars. As this is part of the eBay marketplace, users will also be able to buy and sell a range of automotive parts and accessories.

eBay Garage will be following a similar patter to eBay's previous "My Vehicles" section allowing users to view other people's profiles, share tips of all things automotive and ask each other questions about vehicles they own or parts they have for sale.

To get a better idea of the eBay Garage platform, check out a promotion video that was released by eBay on their eBay Ink Blog website.

Another 50,000 free listings from eBay

As the American Presidential elections roll on, eBay are looking to take advantage of this political hype with yet another free listing promotion.

Running from today up until November 4th, like some of their previous promotions, this promotion is only available to those who have received an invitation. Those who are lucky enough to take part in the promotion are able to list up to 50,000 auction listings without having to pay any listing fees. If you are an ecommerce store who only deals in the "Buy It Now" option, you can still take advantage of this promotion by having the Buy It Now option appear on the auction listings.

As an added incentive to take part in the promotion, eBay are also allowing every listing added to have a total of 12 different pictures for free, allowing you to increase your chances of making a sale by giving the customer a good look at your products.

As the promotion is based around the US elections, the promotion is only available on the ebay.com website. Like all previous eBay free listing promotions, all of the usual terms and conditions apply.

With the promotion already in full swing, make sure you take advantage of your free 50,000 listings before the deadline this Sunday.

eBay break world record

Reading the title of this article you might think that eBay must have broken the record for the biggest online marketplace or the most online sales over a specific period of time? In fact, you're way off. eBay have just broken the record for having the fastest milk float. Yes, you read that right, a milk float.

A few months ago motoring expert Edd China and British Touring Car Championship racer Tom Onslow-Cole were set the challenge by eBay Motors of turning a regular milk float into a racing car, using only the parts they could get off the motoring section of the eBay marketplace.

The pair struck gold when the managed to source a V8 engine from the site, allowing them to truly give this regular milk float a real burst of speed. After months of hard work, scraping together and installing a number of different parts, they tested the milk float at the Transport Research Laboratory in Berkshire and found that the fastest recorded time they achieved was 77.53 mph, a new world record.

Check out a video released by eBay Motors to see all of the action unfold.

eBay on the rise and mobile could be the key

Although many eBay sellers are concerned about how the new Cassini search engine will affect their ability to generate traffic and sales, it would seem that the marketplace is going from strength to strength as sales in the US they have seen their year on year Q3 sales rise 16% to $6.48 billion from $5.59 billion.

John Donahoe, eBay's President and CEO, has put this Q3 increase largely down to the growth in mobile commerce: "Mobile continues to be a game changer for us, and we continue to be a clear leader in mobile commerce and payments."

The growth that eBay has seen in their sales figures, particularly through their mobile platform was emphasised last month through the announcement that the total number of eBay apps downloaded and the number of products listed through mobile devices has surpassed the 100 million figure. The growth of mobile commerce over the last year was summed up nicely on eBay's Ink Blog, who stated:

"Mobile commerce is exploding...connecting people to the things they need and love and helping sellers of all sizes in today's rapidly changing world."

As we here a eSellution tell not only our customers, but our reads too, the future of ecommerce store success lies very much in having a mobile friendly store. With many people now shopping not only on smartphones, but also tablet devices, having various stores that appear correctly on various platforms is going to be key to you achieving any future success.

Most ecommerce software package, such as the one we provide here at eSellution, provide users with a number of different platforms for you to sell online, giving you the best possible chance of making your store successful.

50,000 free eBay listings for businesses

eBay are running yet another promotion, this time offering all business sellers zero insertion fees between the 22nd and 26th of October. The promotion is just one of many free listings offers that the marketplace has offered in recent months, adding further weight to the speculation that eBay will be offering free listings permanently within most categories once the new search engine "Cassini" is released.

The listing promotion is available on products listed as new 30 day or good till cancelled. Also, to take part in the promotion, you must be a business seller with a basic or features shop subscription. The promotion is available to the first 50,000 listings added that have a price of 99p or more.

All usual stipulations that you see in a eBay free listing promotion apply. They are:

  • Products in "Property" and "Cars, Motorcycles & Vehicles" categories are excluded
  • People who sign up during the promotion are excluded
  • Business accounts who do not meet eBay's minimum seller performance are excluded
  • All items listed for less than 99p are also excluded

eBay giving sellers further protection from unfair buyers

As we at eSellution constantly see with a number of different eBay stores, your feedback levels play a crucial part in not only how your store is perceived by the buying public, but with the imminent introduction of eBay's new search engine, it will also play a huge role in where your store ranks within some search results. While a lot of this feedback maybe justified, some stores in the past have been crippled by buyers leaving unfair negative comments, leaving a seller with no recourse to fight the allegation. However, that has all seemingly changed.

eBay are now looking to try and even the playing field somewhat, by giving sellers the ability to leave negative feedback on a buyer. This is done within the new (well reintroduced) "Rate this transaction" section that allows you to state whether the experience was positive or if you wish to report the buyer. You then need to put in the comments section specifically why you are reporting this buyer. However, eBay wish for a seller to only report a buyer if you believe they have done something to violate eBay's policies.

Essentially, what this does is give the ability for an eBay store to fight against any negative feedback that they believe they have been unfairly given. eBay will then look into the case in order to not only protect you, but protect any future sellers that buyer comes into contact with. If eBay find that you have been unfairly given negative feedback, they will take appropriate actions to remedy the situation.

Although eBay have now made this change, for some this has come way too late as they have already grown tired of buyers unfairly harming their business and are now looking to break away for the marketplace and use ecommerce software to open up their ecommerce store, which will give them more control over the running of their business.

New eBay search feature to dramatically alter seller performance

We at eSellution have been looking at how eBay are set to replace their search engine system "Voyager" with a new search engine named "Cassini." The idea behind the new search engine is to give buyers a new way to personalise their search results. However, while this personalisation is good for the buyer, it could seriously harm the ability for an eBay store to make sales.

One of Cassini's biggest features allows buyers to rank their search results based on four different criteria: trust, value, diversity and relevance. For example, if a customer wants more variety but has less of a priority on price, they will choose to have the diversity factor to be more relevant than value. However, if the cost of a product is the most important factor to a buyer, they will choose to prioritise price over any other factor. This new feature could help some stores increase their sales but seriously harm others. How popular your store becomes in terms of search result relevance is going to be entirely dependant on what a buyer's shopping habit is and as some stores traffic comes primarily from search results, some stores could see a dip in not only traffic but any subsequent sales.

The trust factor within the new search engine looks at a number of different things to do with a particular eBay store. Cassini not only looks at the seller rating for a specific eBay store, but also searches through all of the feedback for that store to look for any positive and negative words. These words, when combined with the seller rating, will determine how high a user's store will appear within a specific search engine when the results a filtered so that "Trust" is the most important. This new algorithm for determining a store's trust levels, will also be used are part of eBay's scheme on putting a stop to fraudulent sales on the marketplace.

The fact that buyers are now able to personalise their search results, may now see eBay cutting back the total number of results that are displayed to a user when they carry out one of these searches. The question many ecommerce stores within eBay now have is simply, if eBay's new search engine will tailor a buyers search results, why should some online stores be paying seller fees when their products aren't even being displayed with the majority of results? If they do decide to make this change in terms of the number of results appearing within a search engine, it could potentially see the removal of not only seller fees but also the detailed seller rating.

As many customers are always looking for the best possible deal they can get, any store with lower prices than their competitors are always going to see a strong level of traffic and sales no matter what ecommerce software they may be using. This feature has been in testing for a few years and is set to be launched some time in 2013.

Key features of eBay's new item page and what you need to do

The eBay revolution is well under way with a new logo, home page and now a new item page set to be released in the coming weeks. The new layout brings about a whole host of changes which will only be a positive in helping eBay stores achieve greater sales.

So what will the new item page bring?

Key Changes

  • Bigger Product Image - The size of the image has been increased to 500 pixels which will be a fantastic change for many online stores. The obvious benefit of this is that is will allow customers to see the products you have for sale in much greater detail. However, this size increase means that you must also have an image that is big enough to fit this space. If the image is too small, it is just going to harm the overall look of your product, as the image will either be smaller than your other product images or be pixelated.
  • Clearer Buttons -  The "Buy Now" and "Add to Cart" buttons have received a bit of a makeover, changing their size so that they are bigger and more uniform, as well as altering the look so that they fit in more with the new sleek eBay design. The engagement buttons on the top right of the item page have also been changed, becoming easier for customers to see as they are now not cramped up against the seller information, but clearly displayed near the product header.
  • Improved Condition and Shipping Visibility - The condition of the product has been moved to the very top of the right-hand column to allow buyers to instantly see the condition as soon as they load up the item page. Shipping information has been moved from the centre of the item page to the right-hand column underneath the product condition.
  • Increased Item Specific Visibility - The item specifics for the product have been moved way up the page so that they are now previously where the shipping information was. This is a great change to the page layout as it now allows buyers to see all of the important information about the product at the top, rather than having to scroll down the page.
  • Detailed Watcher Information - Rather than just having the "Add to Watch list" button, you can now see how many people are currently watching that product. This is a great new addition for both buyers and sellers alike as it provides buyers with more information about a products popularity, while also increasing the chances of a seller achieving sales as a high number of watchers will encourage a customer to quickly make a purchase.

The only down side of the new item page for some sellers may be the fact that the your store information has been moved further down the right-hand column. This change means that until they become familiar with the new layout, customers may have difficulty locating this information on the page.

What you need to do

This information gives all ecommerce stores the opportunity to make changes to your store so that you are ready for the impending changes. This means altering your product information so that all of the product details that will soon be placed at the top of the item page are correct, with as much detail as possible included.

However, the important aspect of your product for you to look at is the images. If your images are currently rather small, you now need to look at getting new images for your products, ones that are big enough to fit the new 500 pixel area without the image looking stretched.

eBay's new home page and what it means for your business

By the end of the year, eBay will have switched over all eBay accounts so that they all contain the new home page layout. Currently the page is in the testing phase, with around 10% of all account currently having the new format.

The new format will have an opt-in feature meaning an eBay user can choose to have the new layout or just keep the old eBay homepage. If they choose the new layout, they will have the eBay banner at the top of the page but then the rest of the page will be based on the new feed system. The feed system collects data from your account based on your own personal interests and some of the products you have viewed and purchased from eBay stores in the past. The feed then displays a stream of products within the eBay marketplace that they believe you will be interested in. However, should the feed contain products that you do not want to appear on your homepage, you can customise the layout so that the products appearing on the page are exactly what you would like.

The real benefit of this will be for stores who sell products that are based within niche categories with less competition than some of the other major sectors. Users can not only filter their product results by category, but also by specific keywords within that category. The less products online stores within the category  the better the chance of your products appearing on a user's home page. This will not only make more people aware of a specific product in your store, it will increase traffic to your store and most likely result in increased sales.

The new layout also shifts the focus primarily to the product image. In the past, the image was just another aspect that entices the user along with the title and product description. Under the new feature, as the homepage will now just display images of various products you may be interested in, having the right picture is going to be incredibly important. If you have a product on someone's homepage that has a poor quality image in comparison to the other products near it, it stands to reason that a user is going to be less likely to select your product over one in another ecommerce store

Take a look at the new feed layout below.

eBay battle Groupon for daily deal supremacy

The launch of eBay's new logo has seemingly brought about more changes to the marketplace than we have seen in a number of years. Not only has the site changed the style of it's home page to suit the interests of each user when purchasing from an eBay store, they have also now launched a new deals website that could potential remove an ailing Groupon from the top of the tree.

The new site called 'eBay Lifestyle Deals' offers a range of deals and discount certificates across a number of products and services. As the site has only been up and running literally a few days, the number of offers the site boasts is currently rather limited, with all the offers available for customers to see across one single page. These deals range from an acupuncture session to a one hour dog walk.

According to statistics produced by media and advertising experts, BIA/Kelsey, consumer spending on online daily deals in the US alone is expected to reach $5.5 billion by 2016, demonstrating the potential success that the site can achieve. eBay are seemingly last ones to the party, with not just Groupon, but also Amazon and Google also launching their own daily deals websites in the last few years, through their respective 'Google Offers' and 'AmazonLocal' websites.

However, as the new deals website is very much in it's infancy, the offers are only available to customers based in a number of major cities throughout the United States. Should the site prove to be as successful as many are predicting, it will only be a matter of time before we see the offers available to countries worldwide.

eBay becoming a waste of time for some online sellers

While eBay has been the most popular online marketplace for buyers and sellers to exchange goods, with increasing prices and restrictions, it is becoming increasingly difficult for any eBay store to make a steady profit.

One of the major problems for online stores within eBay is becoming the increasing amount of advertisements to other stores that are appearing not only on the search areas of the site, but also the listing pages of specific item products.

eBay sellers spend a substantial amount of time tailoring their items, making sure the titles are correct, the image is of a good quality and they item contains an informative description that gives a customer all the information they may require before making a purchase. Not to mention the amount a seller pays in listing fees for each of their products and if they have thousands of products in their online store, it is going to cost them a lot to list the products. It all adds up to substantial amount of time and effort on the part of the seller in order to try and make sales each month. Now it would seem that the job is becoming even harder to turn that initial customer interest into a sale with the 'See what other people are watching' section at the bottom of the listing page. Basically, this gives the customer a look at other products that are also available to purchase from different stores that are similar to the item you are viewing.

Basically this is eBay saying 'Okay, so you like this type of product? why not purchase this instead?' If you are the person whose items appear in this bottom section, you may like this concept because basically customers are viewing your products without you having to do any real work. However, if you are the store owner who's listing page this has appeared on, your essentially paying your listing fee and spending time tailoring the content, only for eBay's ad to pop up and attempt to direct the customer to go elsewhere.

I tested this out using a random search for a canvas wardrobe, selecting the first result I came across. When scrolling to the bottom of the listing page I found what I was looking for:

Now I can kind of understand that from eBay's perspective you want all customers to have the best possible shopping experience they can, so providing them with more options in terms of what to purchase is going to give them a more enjoyable experience. However, as online stores pay a listing fee to have their items placed within eBay, it is only right that they expect that a customer should be entirely focussed on their product when they do actually view the listing page. Not to mention the fact that some listing fees are different meaning one seller may have paid more for the listing than another, but still have their listing devalued by advertisements appearing within it.

These little additions are only serving to annoy a number of eBay store owners, resulting in them considering closing their store altogether as it is no longer a profitable enterprise.

So what are the alternatives?

If you are an online seller growing fed up with the increasing fees and restrictions placed on eBay, you can look to break away from eBay, but still sell online through your own ecommerce store.
