eBay to give buyers real life social shopping experience

From Friday 30th November until Sunday 2nd December, eBay will be running a social media shopping experience in Covent Garden, London as they look to increase interactivity and sales on the online marketplace.

According to some experts, Sunday December 2nd is expected to be the busiest shopping day of the year, as  many people look to get a large amount of their Christmas shopping completed well before the anticipated rush.

The pop up store will contain large screens that will show Facebook, Twitter and Instagram posts which people have placed on the social networking sites of products they have or would like to purchase. It is thought that this will give people an idea of what the more popular gift ideas are this Christmas and encourage them to also purchase these items.

During a visit to the eBay pop up store, users will also be able to download the various eBay mobile applications on to their smartphones and scan product QR codes using a scanner on their smartphones. This ability to scan QR codes will be the most memorable aspect of the pop up store shopping experience as users will be able to view these scanned products in augmented reality, meaning they can view the products as a 3D image.

This augmented reality could soon become a main part of eBay's shopping experience, as the online marketplace believe that this technology could bring a £2.4 billion revenue increase by 2014.

Not the first pop up store

This isn't the first time eBay have tired the idea of running a pop up store. Earlier this month, eBay opened up a pop up store in Toronto, allowing users to browse a variety of items that eBay have placed in the store from the online marketplace place that they believe would be great holiday gifts.

Using a QR scanner on their smartphone, users will then scan the QR code relating to the product in the ebay store, which will then open up the product on the eBay mobile app for the user to purchase online.

These stores launched by eBay are seen as an attempt to increase the use of mobile commerce within it's users, allowing them to develop an ever increasing mobile shopping platform which the marketplace has become heavily invested in.

Plenty on offer for you from eBay this weekend

eBay are running a promotion this weekend offering free listings to private sellers in an attempt to increase the number of products on the marketplace in the run up to Christmas.

Private sellers will be able to place 100 auction style listings with a starting price of £1 or more for free. However, any feature fees will still apply. The promotion is only available on the eBay.co.uk website and in order to take part, you must have a registered address in the UK.

Also, those who use various listing tools will be excluded from the promotion, as will those products listed in the "Cars, Motorcycles & Vehicles" category.

The free private listing promotion gets under way on Saturday 24th November at 00:00:01am and will last until Sunday 25th November at 23:59:59pm.

The promotion is a great way for users who have never used eBay to give the platform a try by listing a few items which then may encourage them to possible open up an eBay store in the future.

Sunday Spectacular

Don't forget to take part in another Sunday spectacular from eBay this weekend, that will see up to 75% off a variety of products. The sale has been running the last few Sundays and has proved to be a great success up to this point, with millions of people getting involved.

The sale kicks of at 8am sharp.

Two new features to help boost eBay sales

eBay this week announced two new features that they believe will help boost the sales of those running an eBay store; Item Condition Notes and Multi Variation Merger application.

The Item Condition Notes feature allows you to place important information regarding a product at the top of the listing page. In the past many online sellers have had buyers complain that the item they purchased was not as described, simply due to the fact that the buyer hadn't read the item description properly and had overlooked key aspects.

The new notes feature eliminates this problem by ensuring that a customer is able to see all of the key information regarding the product right at the top of the listing, ensuring they have all the facts before deciding  whether to make the purchase. This will help not only increase the number of sales a store achieves by keeping the buyer more informed, it will also most likely result in the number of returns decreasing.

The second new feature from eBay, the Multi Variation Merger tool, allows sellers to create multiple variation listings based on a single listing and what's more, it's all for a single listing fee. While this has already been seen on a number of different categories across eBay, it has only recently been added to the category where it will be most important; fashion.

Not only will this feature allow you to achieve more sales, it will also allow you to reduce your costs as you can combine, size, colour and any other variations on a product into one listing, rather than having to create separate listings for each variation.

Sellers will also be able to use the tool to keep the Best Match score that you have with individual listings while also allows you to achieve increased visibility for some of the listings you have that haven't performed as well in the past.

How to achieve success on Black Friday and beyond

With only two days until the start of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, traditionally the beginning of the Christmas shopping season in the US the day after Thanks Giving, many stores are looking ahead to the anticipated day as they look to achieve a high number of sales and in turn, plenty of profit. According to figures published by software developers Adobe, Cyber Monday alone will bring in around $2 billion to both bricks and mortar and online stores.

However, with these stores all vying for a customer's business, how can you improve your ecommerce store to ensure you give yourself the best chance of achieving success?

Be up early

As you run an online store, it's going to be open 24/7 so you don't need to worry about customers being unable to buy. However, need to plan for it being as busy as possible, which means you need to get up as early as possible. A busy day means plenty of traffic, plenty of questions and of course plenty of sales. You don't want to wake up late and be facing a backlog of orders and queries, this will diminish your overall customer service and make the day extremely difficult for you.

Monitor your competitors

While it's impossible to monitor everyone, you should pay close attention to those stores that you consider your closest rivals. Look at the products they have on offer and any promotions they may be running for this special occasion. If you don't pay attention and your competitor changes their prices lower than yours. it is going to result in you getting fewer sales than you expected as your customers go to your rivals for their purchases.

Advertise everywhere

Although it may be difficult to launch a full on marketing campaign now with only two days to go, you should still look to publicise your products, offers and anything else to do with your store everywhere you can. This means placing information on your social media pages, forums, through emails pretty much anywhere and everywhere you can think of. Advertising your store is going to not only result in a great brand awareness, but once Friday roll around you will begin to see an increase in traffic.

Offer free shipping

You will be surprised the difference free shipping can make in enticing a customer to purchase from your store. Not only does it encourage them to visit your ecommerce or eBay store and make that initial purchase, the fact that shipping is free often tempts them into making multiple purchases. Yes you may be losing a small amount of your usual profit as you will have to pay for the shipping, but if the promotion results in many more orders, you

Create a landing page

Whether you are running a promotion for Black Friday, Cyber Monday or for Christmas, creating a seasonal based landing page can play a pivotal role in drawing traffic to your site. Its appealing design, when combined with information regarding any products or services you offer will enforce a positive brand image within the customer and make them more likely to visit your store in order to make a purchase. Just remember to remove the landing page once the seasonal event has ended.

Optimise your site for mobile

On Black Friday, around 25 percent of all sales will be make through mobile devices, meaning if your business doesn't have a mobile store that is fully optimised, you are going to be missing out on a significant amount of sales. Read our guide "How to make your mobile store a success" for an in depth look on how you can develop your mobile ecommerce platform.

While this article may be geared towards Black Friday in the states, there is nothing to stop you from employing these techniques on your own ecommerce store no matter where you may be in the world, in order to give you the best chance of achieving success this Christmas.

It's going to be a mobile Christmas

According to figures published by online marketplace giants eBay, it looks like running around shopping centres on Christmas Eve looking for those last minute Xmas presents are soon to be a thing of the past as they expect eBay mobile transactions to exceed £10 billion for the year after a 200 percent year on year increase in Q3.

However, this increase in purchases through mobile devices isn't purely through smartphones, eBay's applications can be used to various phone and tablet devices, opening up a whole new number of ways for buyers to easily complete their transactions on an eBay store. With more advanced tablets and smartphones, such as the iPhone 5, released on a regular basis, buyers making their purchases through these devices is going to increase more and more as the years go on until we get to the point where is makes up the vast majority of all sales.

From the perspective of an ecommerce store, this underlines the necessity for a store to have a fully optimised mobile store, enabling you to take advantage of some of the customers venturing into mobile commerce, with over 2.5 million people shopping on a mobile store for the first time on eBay alone.

From eBay with love

If you missed out on eBay's Sunday Spectacular last weekend don't worry, judging from information on eBay's site it looks like they will be running another one this weekend.

The sale event will begin on Sunday 18th November at 8am and will last for the entire day. The offer boasts up to 75% off RRP, but is only limited to one purchase per deal.

Last Sunday's sale saw a surge in sales across the marketplace with all of the products within the promotion, such as iPads, iPhones and other equipment selling out quickly.

For an eBay store not part of the promotion but sells similar products to those within eBay's Sunday Spectacular, if you were planning on running an early Christmas promotion this weekend you may want to leave it until another time as you may find it difficult to compete with some of the prices that will be on offer for buyers this weekend.

For all buyers it's a case of set your alarm clocks for early Sunday morning to make sure that you take advantage of all these promotions before they quickly run out.

eBay revamp Top Seller status

eBay have released a brand new badge for some of it's top rated sellers that meet a specific set of requirements.

The badge will begin appearing on eBay store owners who have not only have the usual top rated seller requirements, but also offer no more than a 1 day handling time and a money-back returns policy of at least 14 days.

If you are an eBay seller who is currently a top rated seller, you need to update both your policies and your overall purchasing system to ensure that you now reach these new requirements. If you are someone is the sole worker for their business, reducing handling time can often be difficult due to the influx of orders you receive  especially over the Christmas period. To try and give yourself the best chance of achieving as low a handling time as you possibly can, ensure you have the basics covered.

These basics include:

  • Having your packaging system all set up and ready
  • Drafting in help if orders get too much
  • Make sure you have enough stock to cover all orders
  • Get the products to the couriers in time for one-business day handling

Achieving the top seller ranking will not only make your profile look nicer with a bright new crest on your eBay templates, but it will also instil confidence in your customers, increasing the chances of them not only visiting your store, but making a purchase.

eBay's much anticipated International selling feature up and running

eBay have launched their International Rate Card for eBay store owners who are currently on eBay's Anchor Shop package.

In the past, whenever a seller has decided that they want to sell Internationally, they had to list each of their products as being available for overseas customers to purchase it. However, the new International Seller Rate Card allows sellers to list their products directly on to a number of different eBay sites within Europe and in Australia.

This means that rather than a buyer having to come to the eBay UK site and purchasing from there as an International purchaser, the buyer can simply view it on their country's own eBay site as long as they are based in one of the countries within the International Seller Rate Card package. As an eBay seller, it will allow you to dramatically increase the number of users your products are exposed to, most likely resulting in an increase in sales.

If you are an eBay seller who would like to take advantage of this new feature, you must upgrade your eBay account to the Anchor Shop package at £349.99 a month and then tick the box to "Opt in to eBay International Selling."

To apply to be part of this new International selling feature you must be a top rated seller. However, should you lose your top rated seller status once you have been accepted, you will not lose access to the feature. Any sales made Internationally will also not affect the Detailed Seller Rating (DSR) that you have in the UK.

Before taking the plunge and upgrading your account to an anchor package, you need to first crunch the numbers in order to make sure that it will be the right move for your business. If you are not already on the anchor shop package you need to check how much you are paying based on the number of products you are listing in the UK as well as how much you are paying to list products on other International sites. For many eBay stores this will be the right move as many businesses are currently paying more than £349.99.

When branching out to International markets, you also may want to look at how you can use ecommerce software to also increase the number of channels your ecommerce store operates in, allowing you to develop your brand image and increase sales. We at eSellution offer a number of different packages to suit all online sellers, ranging from a free ecommerce store to our  Enterprise package.

eBay's search changes and how they impact variation listings

This last week eBay have made a number of changes to the way items with multiple variations appear within the search results page. Depending on the type of eBay store you run, these changes could either be positive or negative.

The main difference between the new search results and the old setup is that the products listed within the search results will no longer display multiple variations of a product. For example, if you are selling a clothing item, the search result will no longer display all of the different colour variations that are available. Instead, the result will display the variation image closely matched to the search criteria. For example, if you search for "Red Dress," the search results will show the product image in the variation of red, rather than showing multiple colour variations.

However, the multiple variation feature hasn't been completely removed, just merely hidden. If the user selects "More options" next to the product image, they will be able to see more information about the product which includes the various other variations that the product has.

The main problem people running an ecommerce store are finding with the new search layout is customers incorrectly purchasing an item in the wrong size as, although they have searched for one specific variation, once the system has found this particular product variation, it populates all the other variations randomly. This means that people are then selecting the item thinking it is the right size and instantly "Buy it now" and before the issue has been discovered, the item has already been shipped. Obviously, this is a time consuming and annoying situation for both the buyer and seller.

Also, as eBay picks up variations based on colour, it is strongly advised that the seller be as basic as they possibly can when entering this colour information for each of their products. For example, if your product is "Persian red," it would be better to just simply put it as "red." The reason for this is that very few people will search for Persian red meaning that when they type red into their search parameters, your products are going to appear further down the search results as they do not match the search results as much as other listings above it.

New Pinterest feature gives the platform a new dimension

Pinterest have created a new feature called "Secret Boards" that allows users to create a board that can only be viewed by invitation only.

Pinterest software engineer Evrhet Milam believes that it is a great time to test the new feature with the festive period fast approaching: "You can use secret boards to keep track of holiday gifts, plan a special event or work on a project that you aren't yet ready to share with the world."

While the need feature seems to be a great way for users to work in secret on their own personal projects, the new feature can also be a great benefit to an ecommerce store or other online business, such as an eBay store.

If you are working on adding a new product range to your store, you may create a secret board that only your members of staff can access, suggesting different products you could possibly add to your store. However, if isn't just in-house where this feature benefits. You could also use the feature to give your dedicated customer base, such as your social media followers, a sneak peak at the new products you are adding to your store in the near future by inviting them to have a look. Not only would it allow them to feel more of a valued customer, but it would also allow you to get some initial feedback as to how popular each product will be when it eventually goes on sale.

Pinterest is fast becoming one of the most popular social media tools particularly for an ecommerce business, allowing owners to share images on their products in order to increase they brand and product awareness as well as increase traffic to their store. The site currently has around 20 million unique visitors, the vast majority of them being women.

The importance of retargeting this Christmas

When looking around for the best places to purchase their Christmas presents, many customers don't really know where to go, searching across a number of different ecommerce stores to compare what's on offer and at what price.

This indecision presents a great opportunity for any online business, whether it's an ecommerce or eBay store, to try and direct the customer towards their site, enticing them to purchase their Christmas presents from their store. While many think retargeting is a way to bring back customers who have purchased from your store in order to turn them into repeat customers, it doesn't just stop there.

As Christmas shoppers tend to browse online stores well before Christmas gets in full swing, if you sell products that themselves or their family members are interested in, they may have already looked through your site to see what you have on offer.

Retargeting advertisements then begin to appear within this users Internet browser, advertising similar products that they previously purchased or viewed in your store. While their shopping experience may have been some months earlier, the retargeting adverts remind the user about your store, prompting them to return again to see what other offers you have.

However, it isn't just enough having the advertisement appear in the browser, you need to create an advertisement that fits in with the current shopping trend. Obviously, as Christmas is approaching, any advertisements you create should be based around around this theme as well as highlighting any offers you are currently running. Also the style of the design should relate to your overall brand image. For example, the colour scheme should not only have Christmas connotations, but should also relate to whatever ecommerce or eBay template design you have on your store.

Not only will these retargeting ads increase your brand exposure, they will also increase your traffic and hopefully your sales as customers who have previously purchased from you return to buy again and customers who looked at your products months ago also return but this time to make that first time purchase.

Top tips to improving your store's text and images

When selling online, it's not only what you're selling that's important, but also how you show those products in your store. In recent weeks we at eSellution have produced articles for you on how to improve your products by including images and detailed descriptions. However, it isn't just about adding them to your products, how you display the images and the description text also plays a major role in determining how successful your store will be in achieving sales.

Product Images

Whenever you take a product picture from your ecommerce store, there are a number of different things you should do:

  • Make sure the image isn't blurry - A clear image allows the customer to see the product in greater detail. If the image is blurry they aren't really going to be able to see it properly. Not only that, having a blurry image for your product makes your business look unprofessional.
  • Photograph the products against a white background - When you photograph your products, you need to make sure that the product is against a white background. Having all of your images appear on a white background improves the look of your website, as all the images are the same colour. Not only that, having a white background makes it much easier to edit the image as you don't have to worry about having to take a coloured background into account when cropping or cutting the image. Creating a white background for your images is simple enough to do. If your products are small, it could simply mean placing them on top of a white sheet of paper when you take the picture.
  • Try to avoid using watermarks - Especially on sites like eBay, people want to protect their product images from other people using them so they put big bold images on top of them or have thick borders around the image. While this stops other sellers from using your product images, it makes the product images look less tasteful. If you can help it, you should look to avoid using borders or images over your product photograph. If you do decide to use an image to protect your photo, just use a subtle watermark across the image. That way it doesn't damage the overall look of your image and people still know that the image belongs to your store.
Product Description

Now that you've taken care of your product images, the next thing to focus on is your product description. Having followed our previous article: Ecommerce success starts with the basics and written a product description that provides all the information your customers need, the next step is presenting that information in the correct way.

  • Use the right font - With so many different fonts to choose from, it's often tempting to have the wildest font you can find to help your product descriptions start out. However, you need to remember that the wilder it is, the more difficult it is going to be for your customers to read. When selecting a font, you should select one that is professional in appearance and easy to read. Once you have selected a font, you should use that font on every single one of the products you have in your store.
  • Keep the text the same size - Now that you've selected your font, you need to choose a size to display the text at. You don't want the text to be that small that the customer can't read it, but you also don't want it to be too big that it takes up majority of the page. Usually the standard font size of around 12 will be big enough to make it easily readable and not too big on the page. Just like the type of font you use, you want to keep the font size the same across all of your products. A mistake a lot of online sellers make is that they have different products which have descriptions containing different fonts at different sizes. All this does is damage the look of your online store. The cleaner your website is, the more professional your public image will be.
  • Highlight important information - While all of the information in your product description is important, some bits of it are more important than others. For example if a product is only available in a particular size at the moment or you don't offer refunds on it, you might want to make sure the customer doesn't skim over and miss this information by making it appear bold so that it stands out from the rest.
  • Check the HTML - If you have both an eBay store and an ecommerce store, you may look to save yourself some time by copying over the product description from eBay and placing it into your ecommerce store. However, when you do this you need to make sure that it is only the text you are copying over. If you copy over text that has HTML in it, it will alter the way your description looks, making it appear unprofessional and harming the look of your store.

How to increase your social media followers

If you're someone who runs their own business page, a fan page or any other organisation page, you know that having as many followers as possible is the ultimate goal in helping increase the brand identity of your business. Whenever we have a new client joins us here at eSellution, one of the first things we do is look to ensure their social media pages are fully optimised to provide the best benefit to their ecommerce store.

Whether it's on Facebook or Twitter, there are a number of different things you can do on each platform to give yourself the best chance of gaining as many followers as you possibly can.

Facebook

Customise your page

When you set up a business page for your ecommerce store, you want to add all the information anyone visiting the page would need as soon as possible. This means placing your business logo as your display picture and adding all other information such as what your business is, how long you have been in business and any other contact information such as URL, telephone number and email address. This information should be added before you starting posting content on your wall or invite people to follow your page.

Invite your friends

The easiest way to get the ball rolling is to ask all of your friends to follow your business page. Once they become a fan of your page, the notification will appear on the news feed of all their friends, allowing them to also see your business and possibly follow you. This is the easiest way to create that initial brand awareness and get as many people as possible becoming aware of your ecommerce store.

Welcome message

Something you can look to do as an added personalised touch for each of your followers, is to send them a thank you message and welcome them to your business page. While this may be more difficult to do the more followers you generate long term, for the initial stages on your social media page, this allows each of your followers to gain a personalised experience on your business page, ensuring they feel valued right from the start.

Vary your content

While you want to post content on your wall on a regular basis, the success of your Facebook page comes in being able to post a variety of content. The great thing about Facebook is that you can post pretty much any content you like. This means you can post regular status updates, links to your website, pictures, videos, articles like I said, pretty much anything you want. The more varied content you post, the more chance you have of not only engaging with your current followers, but enticing new users to follow your page.

Time you post

Although you will get engagement from some of your followers no matter what time during the day you post content, there are statistically times during the day where engagement levels will be higher than others. To optimise your engagement levels, you should look to post your content either on the morning, during lunch hours or during the evening, as these are the times when the higher proportion of users will check their social media accounts.

Open a Facebook store

While having a Facebook store on your page won't drastically increase your sales, it is a great marketing tool to make people on your Facebook business page aware of the products you sell without them actually having to leave the social media site. This works by placing a "My Store" tab on their business page which a user can click on and view your products. If a customer finds a product on your Facebook store that they are interested in, they can choose to their make the purchase through Facebook or visit your external ecommerce or eBay store to do it. If you have yet to set up a Facebook store, you can get a Free Facebook store from us today

Twitter

Customise your page

Like Facebook, as soon as you have created your Twitter business page, you need to update all of your information so that anyone visiting your profile knows who you are and what you offer within seconds. On top of that, you should also provide an external link to your business.

Follow as many people as you can

As soon as you have everything set up, you should begin following as many people as possible. However, by this I don't mean simply follow anyone and everyone. As your profile is a business and not a personal account, you should only follow important figures in your field of interest. Following these people will allow more people to become aware of your Twitter page and if you post content that people find interesting, then some of these people will also decide to follow you.

Start Tweeting

Unlike Facebook, there are certain limitations on what you can Tweet. Generally, you should be looking to only post status updates, pictures and external links for people to access. These external links can be to your online store, your latest promotions or any articles you may have produced.

Avoid personalised Tweets

Again, as this isn't a personal Twitter account, no one following your business page wants to know what you are doing, where you are going or what you had for your lunch. Anything you post on your Twitter page should be only aimed at helping improve your business's image and generating sales.

Interact with people

The great thing about Twitter comes in the ease in which you can interact with anyone; friends, family, customers or even leading figures in your industry. This communication is an integral part of not only improving your brand image, but making your business seem more personalised and more of an important figure within your industry. You may even try to reach out to one of these leading figures in order to get them to retweet one of your posts or engage with something you say. Although, due to the amount of people who try to engage with them on a daily basis, you may find that your Tweet receives no response.

Retweet

While it's important to get your own tweets out there, it's also a good idea to retweet other peoples Tweets. This come be done for a number of different reasons; you find something interesting that someone else has posted and you want to share it with your followers or you simply want to give someone a helping hand by making as many people as possible aware of someone's post. The long term success of this is that, when you post content, you may find that some of these individuals decide to return the favour and retweet your content to their followers.

eBay giving sellers further protection from unfair buyers

As we at eSellution constantly see with a number of different eBay stores, your feedback levels play a crucial part in not only how your store is perceived by the buying public, but with the imminent introduction of eBay's new search engine, it will also play a huge role in where your store ranks within some search results. While a lot of this feedback maybe justified, some stores in the past have been crippled by buyers leaving unfair negative comments, leaving a seller with no recourse to fight the allegation. However, that has all seemingly changed.

eBay are now looking to try and even the playing field somewhat, by giving sellers the ability to leave negative feedback on a buyer. This is done within the new (well reintroduced) "Rate this transaction" section that allows you to state whether the experience was positive or if you wish to report the buyer. You then need to put in the comments section specifically why you are reporting this buyer. However, eBay wish for a seller to only report a buyer if you believe they have done something to violate eBay's policies.

Essentially, what this does is give the ability for an eBay store to fight against any negative feedback that they believe they have been unfairly given. eBay will then look into the case in order to not only protect you, but protect any future sellers that buyer comes into contact with. If eBay find that you have been unfairly given negative feedback, they will take appropriate actions to remedy the situation.

Although eBay have now made this change, for some this has come way too late as they have already grown tired of buyers unfairly harming their business and are now looking to break away for the marketplace and use ecommerce software to open up their ecommerce store, which will give them more control over the running of their business.

Is Pinterest the best for your business?

Okay, so you've decided to embark on a social media campaign to increase the social media standing of your online store. When prioritising which platforms to focus on your decide that Facebook and Twitter is the best way to go as they traditionally have been the best platforms for success. However, is Pinterest now usurping Facebook and Twitter's dominance as being the best social media platform for an ecommerce business?

While Pinterest has a substantially lower average monthly usage than the other two social media platforms, it can be a much more efficient tool for your eBay, Facebook store or any other ecommerce store you may have, as it's overall package can be much more efficient in helping improve your business as a whole.

Although Facebook allows you to post a variety of content such as videos, images and status updates, Pinterest allows you to not only promote all of the products your store sells, but allows people who aren't linked to your account to stumble across them and then use your account as a gateway to purchase from your store.

The success of Pinterest comes in its minimalist design, relying on purely a visceral appeal through its images, rather than using text or any other content to add weight. Added to that is the levels of engagement it creates as users are able to visit and ecommerce store of a product image they have discovered, share it with friends or leave a comment for others to read.

From the perspective on an online store, this is a great marketing channel to use in conjunction with your ecommerce software, allowing you to increase your brand image, as more users can view your products and potentially share them with their friends, increase traffic to your site through the profile links placed on the image as you originally "Pinned" the image and increase your conversion rate as you know anyone visiting your store through this channel has done so because they are already interested in one particular product.

While you shouldn't overlook other social media platforms and focus solely on Pinterest, the success of any business social media campaign lies in being able to  effectively incorporate Pinterest along with all other social media platforms in equal weighting. Whenever you have a new product or range added to your store, you should update your Pinterest content to ensure that any new images are placed on your relevant boards.

The success of Pinterest's layout is emphasised by the fact that eBay are employing a similar layout style as their new home page design within the coming weeks.

New eBay search feature to dramatically alter seller performance

We at eSellution have been looking at how eBay are set to replace their search engine system "Voyager" with a new search engine named "Cassini." The idea behind the new search engine is to give buyers a new way to personalise their search results. However, while this personalisation is good for the buyer, it could seriously harm the ability for an eBay store to make sales.

One of Cassini's biggest features allows buyers to rank their search results based on four different criteria: trust, value, diversity and relevance. For example, if a customer wants more variety but has less of a priority on price, they will choose to have the diversity factor to be more relevant than value. However, if the cost of a product is the most important factor to a buyer, they will choose to prioritise price over any other factor. This new feature could help some stores increase their sales but seriously harm others. How popular your store becomes in terms of search result relevance is going to be entirely dependant on what a buyer's shopping habit is and as some stores traffic comes primarily from search results, some stores could see a dip in not only traffic but any subsequent sales.

The trust factor within the new search engine looks at a number of different things to do with a particular eBay store. Cassini not only looks at the seller rating for a specific eBay store, but also searches through all of the feedback for that store to look for any positive and negative words. These words, when combined with the seller rating, will determine how high a user's store will appear within a specific search engine when the results a filtered so that "Trust" is the most important. This new algorithm for determining a store's trust levels, will also be used are part of eBay's scheme on putting a stop to fraudulent sales on the marketplace.

The fact that buyers are now able to personalise their search results, may now see eBay cutting back the total number of results that are displayed to a user when they carry out one of these searches. The question many ecommerce stores within eBay now have is simply, if eBay's new search engine will tailor a buyers search results, why should some online stores be paying seller fees when their products aren't even being displayed with the majority of results? If they do decide to make this change in terms of the number of results appearing within a search engine, it could potentially see the removal of not only seller fees but also the detailed seller rating.

As many customers are always looking for the best possible deal they can get, any store with lower prices than their competitors are always going to see a strong level of traffic and sales no matter what ecommerce software they may be using. This feature has been in testing for a few years and is set to be launched some time in 2013.
