eBay's much anticipated International selling feature up and running

eBay have launched their International Rate Card for eBay store owners who are currently on eBay's Anchor Shop package.

In the past, whenever a seller has decided that they want to sell Internationally, they had to list each of their products as being available for overseas customers to purchase it. However, the new International Seller Rate Card allows sellers to list their products directly on to a number of different eBay sites within Europe and in Australia.

This means that rather than a buyer having to come to the eBay UK site and purchasing from there as an International purchaser, the buyer can simply view it on their country's own eBay site as long as they are based in one of the countries within the International Seller Rate Card package. As an eBay seller, it will allow you to dramatically increase the number of users your products are exposed to, most likely resulting in an increase in sales.

If you are an eBay seller who would like to take advantage of this new feature, you must upgrade your eBay account to the Anchor Shop package at £349.99 a month and then tick the box to "Opt in to eBay International Selling."

To apply to be part of this new International selling feature you must be a top rated seller. However, should you lose your top rated seller status once you have been accepted, you will not lose access to the feature. Any sales made Internationally will also not affect the Detailed Seller Rating (DSR) that you have in the UK.

Before taking the plunge and upgrading your account to an anchor package, you need to first crunch the numbers in order to make sure that it will be the right move for your business. If you are not already on the anchor shop package you need to check how much you are paying based on the number of products you are listing in the UK as well as how much you are paying to list products on other International sites. For many eBay stores this will be the right move as many businesses are currently paying more than £349.99.

When branching out to International markets, you also may want to look at how you can use ecommerce software to also increase the number of channels your ecommerce store operates in, allowing you to develop your brand image and increase sales. We at eSellution offer a number of different packages to suit all online sellers, ranging from a free ecommerce store to our  Enterprise package.

Top 10 factors that put customers off your store

A survey recently carried out has discovered the top 10 turn offs for customers when visiting an ecommerce store. They were as follows:

  • Site doesn't look secure - Having a website that not only looks secure but actually is as secure as is possibly can be, is vitally important in the long term success of your business. This means having secure servers to protect your customers information and having a secure payment gateway for them to purchase products for you. If any of these aspects aren't secure, it's going to make customers very reluctant to purchase for your store.

  • Bugs and technical issues with the site - Whatever it is, whether it's an ecommerce store or some other website, if a customer comes across a number of bugs when attempting to purchase from your online store, it is going to harm your perception of being a professional business. Again, this will result in you getting less long term and short term sales.

  • Insufficient images and product information - When a customer looks to purchase a product, before they decide whether to buy it or not, they want to have as much information as they can about the product, allowing them to make a more informed decision. No matter what the product is, it should have a number of images showing the product from different angles as well as displaying all the information they may require such as specification, warranty, delivery options and anything else they may require. Like having an website that doesn't look secure, insufficient details for each product makes your site much less trustworthy.

  • Difficult to use shopping cart - Whether a customer visits your mobile store or ecommerce store, the simpler and easier it is for a customer to buy from your store, the happier they are going to be. If you find that customers are finding your shopping cart difficult to use, why not sign up to our ecommerce software and get a free ecommerce store today. We have developed our shopping cart to ensure it provides not only the best shopping experience possible, but is also easy to use for buyer and seller alike.

  • Checkout form too long and time consuming - Again, as stated in the last section you need to try and make it as quick as possible for customers to purchase products. As you need their personal details to send out the products or to get in touch with them in the future, you have to have some form of contact information. However, to make it as simple as possible you could choose to have the most basic information such as name, email address, delivery address and credit card details.

  • Poorly-designed website - Like an unsecured site or one with bugs or a poor shopping cart, the look of your site is an essential part to your business's overall brand image. If your website doesn't look good, it's going to harm your brand image. Again using eSellution as an example, when working with a number of clients every day, we also ensure that their website is of the highest possible standard in all aspects, to maximise the success they can achieve.

  • Slow website - On average, if a customer has to wait more than 3 seconds for a website to load, they are going to grow frustrated and leave the site altogether. You can imagine how many sales this will result in you missing out on if you have a slow loading website. While you want your online store to be appealing to the naked eye, the more images and content you have, the longer it is going to take to load. However, this problem is a lot more prominent in mobile stores as a mobile phone's 3G capabilities aren't as fast as a standard Internet connect. To improve the speed of your site, there are a number of things you can do such as having a cache system the first time a user visits your store, reducing the amount of images you have on your site or changing the format of your images to ones that are smaller in size.

  • Lack of customer reviews and feedback - The opinions of customers have a huge weighting on whether or not someone decides to purchase from your store, as those using eBay will know all too well. If you have a product on your store which has a number of negative reviews, the likelihood is that your sales for this product will be pretty much non-existent. If you do find that certain products in your store are receiving many negative views, you may want to think about removing that product from your store altogether as it clearly isn't of the standard you want for your business.

  • Retailer based outside of the UK - As they say, you always feel most comfortable when at home and online shopping is no different. If you are based outside of the UK, customers are going to be more hesitant to purchase from you because of a number of different factors such as time it will take to get to them, added cost in shipping and an added price they would have to pay in terms of the conversion rate. If you find that you are a successful ecommerce store looking to achieve success within the UK, you may need to think about creating a branch within the UK, allowing you to overcome all of these concerns that customers have.

  • Insufficient delivery options - Like all aspects of ecommerce shopping, the more options you provide your customers with, the happier they are going to be. As time is as much a crucial factor as price and quality, customers want the option to receive their goods as soon as possible but at an affordable price. When a customer purchases from your store they should be able to have standard delivery within 5 working day, express delivery within 2-3 working days and next day delivery. If you have all of these delivery options covered then you will find that the majority of your customers will be happy.

Google and the key to ecommerce success

Working with a number of different online stores on a daily basis, we always advise our clients that the key to success comes in not only being able to sell in as many places as possible, but also have your products appear in as many places as you can . The more places your products are visible in, the more chance a customer has of stumbling across your products and visiting your site to make a sale. One of these places you should look to have your products appear, is within the Google Shopping section.

No matter if you sell on eBay, Amazon or run your own ecommerce store, Google shopping is one of the best comparison sites around in not only helping customers locate the products they want, but helping online stores achieve a greater number of sales. A survey carried out earlier this year by CPC Strategy found that out of all of the search engine comparison sites, Google ranked highest with a click through rate of 2.78% during the first quarter. The study looked at over 4 million clicks, which cost $1.16 million in advertising spending and brought in $7.87 million in revenue.

The top 10 comparison sites based on click through rate are as follows:

  • Google - 2.78%
  • Nextag - 2.06%
  • Pronto - 1.97%
  • PriceGrabber - 1.75%
  • Shopping.com - 1.71%
  • Amazon Product Ads - 1.60%
  • Become - 1.57%
  • Shopzilla - 1.43%
  • Bing - 1.35%
  • TheFind - 0.71%

All of our free ecommerce stores here at eSellution come with the ability for users to verify their domain with Google, ensuring all their products appear not only within the various shopping channels we provide, but also appear within the Google product search section. While this on its own will not ensure that your business achieves wide brand awareness, it should definitely be included in an marketing strategy you plan on implementing.

eBay becoming a waste of time for some online sellers

While eBay has been the most popular online marketplace for buyers and sellers to exchange goods, with increasing prices and restrictions, it is becoming increasingly difficult for any eBay store to make a steady profit.

One of the major problems for online stores within eBay is becoming the increasing amount of advertisements to other stores that are appearing not only on the search areas of the site, but also the listing pages of specific item products.

eBay sellers spend a substantial amount of time tailoring their items, making sure the titles are correct, the image is of a good quality and they item contains an informative description that gives a customer all the information they may require before making a purchase. Not to mention the amount a seller pays in listing fees for each of their products and if they have thousands of products in their online store, it is going to cost them a lot to list the products. It all adds up to substantial amount of time and effort on the part of the seller in order to try and make sales each month. Now it would seem that the job is becoming even harder to turn that initial customer interest into a sale with the 'See what other people are watching' section at the bottom of the listing page. Basically, this gives the customer a look at other products that are also available to purchase from different stores that are similar to the item you are viewing.

Basically this is eBay saying 'Okay, so you like this type of product? why not purchase this instead?' If you are the person whose items appear in this bottom section, you may like this concept because basically customers are viewing your products without you having to do any real work. However, if you are the store owner who's listing page this has appeared on, your essentially paying your listing fee and spending time tailoring the content, only for eBay's ad to pop up and attempt to direct the customer to go elsewhere.

I tested this out using a random search for a canvas wardrobe, selecting the first result I came across. When scrolling to the bottom of the listing page I found what I was looking for:

Now I can kind of understand that from eBay's perspective you want all customers to have the best possible shopping experience they can, so providing them with more options in terms of what to purchase is going to give them a more enjoyable experience. However, as online stores pay a listing fee to have their items placed within eBay, it is only right that they expect that a customer should be entirely focussed on their product when they do actually view the listing page. Not to mention the fact that some listing fees are different meaning one seller may have paid more for the listing than another, but still have their listing devalued by advertisements appearing within it.

These little additions are only serving to annoy a number of eBay store owners, resulting in them considering closing their store altogether as it is no longer a profitable enterprise.

So what are the alternatives?

If you are an online seller growing fed up with the increasing fees and restrictions placed on eBay, you can look to break away from eBay, but still sell online through your own ecommerce store. We at eSellution are currently offering all of our customers a free ecommerce store, which allows you to sell not only on your own  store website, but also have Facebook store and mobile store. You can list as many products as you like without having to worry about paying any fees whatsoever. If you are looking to break away from the restrictions of eBay, this is the answer. Get your free ecommerce store now.

The software is easy to use and literally allows you to set everything up and begin selling in seconds. If all of your products are only on eBay, you can integrate your eBay store to your ecommerce store and transfer all of your products from eBay to the store in minutes.

Add an extra dimension to your store with product videos

When running an ecommerce store, the more you can inform a customer, the more likely they are going to trust you as a seller and be willing to purchase from you.

Traditionally, the best way to provide information about a product is through a number of different images showing the product from different angles and having a detailed description included. While this has been an effective tool for both people who run an ecommerce store and others who may have other stores such as an eBay store, with growing levels of convergence across all media platforms, you may want to start looking at how videos can help provide a different experience for the shopper.

Not only do videos on your online store allow you to give your customers a whole new shopping experience, a video allows you to provide your customers with much more information than they would get from just images and text. A video allows you to not only show the customer the product, but also shows it in action. For example, if they product was a lawn mower, you may want to show a video of someone using it to mow the lawn. Whereas, if it was an item of clothing, you may want to show someone walking around with the clothing item on. Also, rather than having a text description, you can place a voice over on top of the video, providing the audience with added information while they watch the video.

One of the main benefits of a product video, apart from the obvious added product information, is the ability to help build up brand trust in the eyes of the customer by allowing them to actually see what they are buying and for them to hear a friendly voice. While they can't actually see the person who would be talking on the video, hearing the voice gives your business a personal identity and reassures the customer that they would be purchasing from a trustworthy store.

If you currently just sell on eBay, who do not offer this feature, you may want to think about expanding your business to have an ecommerce store that would allow you to take advantage of this marketing medium. As we at eSellution are currently offering a customers a free ecommerce store, when you sign up with us, you will also be able to add a video on to each of your products by simply inserting the embed code.

What 4G means for your ecommerce store

With cities up and down the country rolling out new 4G capabilities within the next few months, what will this  new high-speed data service mean for your online store?

4G will allow mobile devices to have download capabilities up to 100 megabytes per second, that's more than double the speed on current 3G mobile devices. This means that in terms of your ecommerce store, mobile commerce has never been more important. This significantly increased download speed will mean that your online store will load on smartphones much quicker, resulting in customers being able to carry out their shopping experience faster than ever. Not only will this make customers happier, it will also result in you being able to take more orders over a shorter period of time.

However, looking at 4G as simply a way of allowing your current ecommerce store to load quicker on mobile devices is limiting it's true capabilities. Rather than looking at what it can do for your current mobile store, you should be looking at how it can help you have a more advanced mobile store. Currently, a number of mobile stores are limited on the amount of data they can have. The bigger your store in terms of data, the longer it is going to take to load on a mobile device.

This drastically increased speed that 4G provides means that a mobile store on a 4G network can hold much more data and still load quicker than your current 3G store. For this reason, you should be looking at what you can do to in terms of making your store more appealing to your customers visiting through mobile devices. This could consist of having more detailed designs in terms of layout and buttons, having more images to entice customers to purchase your items, insert videos or having a complete overhaul, creating a new, more efficient mobile store from scratch.

Another benefit comes in not only the ability for a customer to view your store's pages quicker, but also find your store quicker through other methods. If a customer is using a mobile app to find the cheapest price for a product they are looking for, they will either use the app itself or the search engine capability on their smartphone to trawl through a number of different ecommerce stores looking for the best deal. On the current 3G data service, due to some sites loading slower than others, a customer may grow tired of the process after searching through four or five different online stores. What this means is that if your store is low down in terms of search engine ranking, the likelihood is that they won't come across your site. Increased speed through 4G capabilities means customers will be able to go through more online stores at a quicker rate, greatly increasing the chances of a customer actually coming across your ecommerce store during their search.

However, even with the 4G data service, if your store is on say page 10 of Google, no matter how quickly a page loads, a customer just isn't going to spend the time searching through all the preceding pages until they come across yours. For this reason, you need to look at your store's SEO as well as your mobile store capabilities. Mobile Commerce - eBay and Facebook can't be wrong

According to statistics produced by online marketplace eBay, every second someone purchases from an ecommerce store on their mobile within the UK. Also, separate figures published yesterday by social media giants Facebook, state that, out of the 1 billion regular monthly users they have, over 600 million of them access the site through their mobile devices. This begs the question that if you have yet to consider mobile users when running your online store, what are you doing?

When you combine the fact that nearly all adults in the UK own a mobile device, with around 50% of those being smartphones and, that the hectic schedules of people mean they no longer have the time to sit at a computer and carry out their shopping from a desktop, many users are now opting to carry out their retail therapy either while on the go or from the comfort of their living room sofa by purchasing from an online store through their mobile devices. According to figures produced by the IMRG Capgermini Quarterly Index, within the next three months, mobile devices will account for around 20% of total online sales.

However, this doesn't just mean you should sit back and think 'Great, people will be visiting my store on their phones and making more purchases.' While this is true for some stores, if you don't have a user friendly mobile store, you will struggle to even get a small fraction of this projected 20%. When a customer tries to make a purchase on their phone, they are usually on the move and using a much smaller screen than in comparison to say a computer screen. If your store displays on a mobile just like it would on a desktop computer, it is going to be difficult for customers to navigate around your site, having to constantly zoom in and scroll around the page to find what they are looking for. This added time and effort makes the whole process much more difficult, most likely resulting in the user growing frustrated and leaving your store to go elsewhere.

When looking to capitalise on this growing sales platform, it is paramount that you have your online store set up to be mobile friendly. This means that when a user visits your store on their mobile device, they will view a different layout than they would see on a desktop computer. There will be less pages to navigate through, buttons will be bigger and easier to click as well as the whole checkout process being much shorter. The quicker you can have a user go through the process and purchase from the store, the happier the customer is going to be and the more sales you are going to be able to make over a shorter period of time.

Still need more convincing about the importance of mobile commerce?

This argument is bolstered by the development of mobile phone apps such as eBay's RedLaser app that allows you to find products within a bricks and mortar store and then search online to see if you can find them cheaper. If one your store is one of the stores a user comes across in these search results and it isn't easier for them to navigate around, like I said earlier, they are just going to leave your store and go elsewhere. In addition to the earlier statistics produced by eBay, the online marketplace stated that they have had over 100 million downloads of their mobile application as well as over 100 million products listed on various eBay stores via mobile devices. To put that into some sort of perspective, $275 is spent on average each second through eBay mobile. While this is across all eBay stores, a small fraction of this could make the difference whether your store is a success or failure.

If you are looking to expand your ecommerce store or haven't fully explored the benefits mobile commerce can bring to your business, I strongly advise you taking a look at our free ecommerce store that allows you to set up an ecommerce store integrated with eBay that also provides you with a Facebook and mobile store all without you having to pay any costs whatsoever. Once you create your free account with eSellution you will be able to set your layout, add your products and literally begin selling in minutes. With under three months to go until Christmas, you can't afford to miss out on the significant amount of sales that the festive period brings because you have an online store that is not efficient for mobile devices.

What not to do when starting an online business

When setting up your own online store, you have an idea of how you want the business to be and various targets as to what defines success over specific periods. While many people like the idea of giving it a go and learning from the mistakes in order to make a more efficient and successful business, there are a number of things you should look to avoid doing right from the get go in order to help your business start on the best possible footing.

Jump Straight In

The excitement and adrenaline you feel when thinking about getting your ecommerce store up and running encourages you to try and get your store open and selling as soon as possible. However, this eagerness to get out of the gates often leads to you overlooking a number of significant aspects that result in your business not achieving the success you would have hoped for. In order to ensure you are giving your business the best possible success, sometimes it's better to control your excitement and think rationally about every single aspect of your business. Being prepared and making sure everything aspect of your business is to the standard that you require, ensures that once your business does open, you won't be surprised by any serious issues that have been overlooked and you will be able to hit the ground running.

Spread Yourself Too Thin

When you decide to set up your own business you have these dreams of your business being a huge success making you a substantial amount of money each year (it's okay, we all have them.) These dreams encourage you to believe that in order to have your business achieve these levels of success, they need to be marketing yourself and selling across as many different platforms that you can possibly think of in order to create high levels of engagement and sales. While this is true, when you first start your business, it may be better to concentrate on one or two channels such as your ecommerce and eBay store, rather than spreading yourself across many. Spreading yourself too thin means that not only will you create substantial amounts of work for yourself as you will need to monitor, market and handle orders across all platforms, the time it will take you to handle all of these tasks will mean that the interaction with your customers will be fairly limited, damaging not only the relationship with that particular customer, but also your entire brand image. Selling on one of two channels to begin with allows you to focus all of your efforts on making those platforms a success, creating a strong brand image through go levels of customer satisfaction and high sales figures. Once you have established long term success across these particular channels, you can then look to branch out and expand your business across new platforms.

Not Fully Considering Your Location

If you are running an online store, you may think that the geographical location of your business in not important as you can literally sell your products from the comfort of your own home if you wish to do so. However, if you do wish to open up a bricks and mortar shop in addition to having an online store, you should look to place your store not only in a place that is not only business with people each day, but is also as close to the centre of that specific as possible. This will allow you to increase your brand awareness not only from the people travelling past your bricks and mortar store each day, but also your centralised location will result in high search engine awareness through the maps feature in various search engines.

Not Looking Closesly At Your Margins

When setting up your store, obviously to begin with the costs you are spending to set up your business are going to massively outweigh the what you are generating from sales. However, the problem some people have is that they believe the key to making your business a success is to just throw money and it and wait for it to achieve a high number of sales. This often leaves many startup businesses with a huge deficit that they cannot make up and it forces them to close the business. When setting up a new business you need to keep a very close eye on exactly what you are spending and making each money. For a new business, rather than spending money to set up your ecommerce store and marketing your brand, you should look at what cost effective methods are available for your business (such as a free ecommerce store from us here at eSellution.) This allows you to reduce the costs you have giving your business the best chance of achieving both short term and long term success.

Not Considering Your Demographic

Depending on what your business is and the products you have for sale, your target demographic is going to be different. The problem some businesses have is not considering what their target demographic is and instead trying to target their products to anyone and everyone. The problem with that is that you are unable to create a marketing campaign that is aimed and a specific target audience, instead you opt for almost a blanket effect. The problem with this is that as your message needs to be generic in order to appeal to everyone, you are essentially doing the opposite of what you originally wanted as this generic message results in you engaging very few people, resulting in a very low click through rate and low ROI. When setting up your online store and setting up your marketing strategy, you must consider who your target customer base is and what specific message you want to project in order to engage these customers and turn them into buyers.

Using Basic Templates

Following on from the idea of business owners wanting to get their online store set up and selling as quickly as possible, especially if you sell on marketplaces such as eBay, you may not care about the look of your store and just want to get it up and going. While it is important to take advantage of possible sales as quick as possible, the look of your store is going to play a major role in enticing a customer to purchase from your store and also in helping project your store's image. Using a generic template, such as those available on eBay, seemingly groups your store in with all other stores using the same template making it difficult for you to stand out from the crowd. When setting up your store, you should take the time to develop a unique and appealing layout. The more original and appealing your store is, the more enticing and memorable it will be to the customer. While many web design companies charge a large amount to have a unique website created for your store, when you sign up a free ecommerce store from eSellution, you will get an appealing layout for your website absolutely for free.

Looking at a new way to sell online

When setting up an online store, many users go through the same channels of selling on eBay or having their own ecommerce store. However, due to recent funding from seed fund accelerator, 500 Startups, Shopinterest looking to be a newly growing platform for users to sell their products online.

Shopinterest allows users to create their own ecommerce store out of any Pinterest board they may have. For example, you simply need to add all of the images of products you have for sale on to one Pinterest board and you would then be able to transform that board into an ecommerce shop that has a fully functional shopping cart. Even if you don't have a Pinterest board, you can add the product images to your account and turn them into a store.

The service underpins the ever-growing trend of social commerce and while it is currently only available to residents in the US, Shopinterest are expected to make it available to other countries within the coming weeks. However, you need to be aware that this is not a free service. Once a user signs up they are then able to take part in a trial, but once the trial is over users will be required to pay for the service. The amount you have to pay will depend on the number of sales you make and products you have in your inventory.

While this seems to be a step forward in terms of developing social commerce to a new level, the fact that users have to pay for the service in a similar way that they would do on other marketplaces like eBay, may be a draw back for a number of online sellers. If a user already has an eBay store, they are going to be reluctant to pay a whole new set of fees to a different platform in order to have their products display on that site also. Furthermore, many users pay eBay's fees because they know the site has dedicated customers as well as a high volume of traffic and sales, so they know they will be getting value for money. Shopinterest is a rather new ecommerce platform and some users may be reluctant to commit to the platform until they are able to see a real growth in traffic and sales within the site.

As I touched on yesterday, developing new channels to sell online is always the right way to go for your business. However, which platforms you choose to move on to is entirely dependant on the products you sell, your customer base and how comfortable you yourself are with using that platform. While Shopinterest could prove to be very successful in helping to enhance a store's sales through social commerce, if you are reluctant to pay for an unproven service, you may look to take advantage of a number of free ecommerce shopping cart platforms that are available to day. Such as the free multichannel platform we offer here at eSellution, integrating an ecommerce, Facebook and mobile store with an eBay store you may already have.

Why it may be time to branch out from eBay

Having an eBay account to buy and sell products has become a way of life for many people who use the marketplace to purchase their goods, sell items they want to get rid of and even make a living by running an eBay store.

While the site has large traffic, many stores and a variety of different products available for customers, the increasing fees, customer demands and guidelines which people must follow has becoming an increasing problem for many online sellers.

For this reason, many online stores are now considering branching out from eBay. By this I do not mean leaving eBay altogether as the traffic and sales the site can generate is substantial and something that no business should miss out on. However, businesses shouldn't rely on eBay as their only online selling channel as you are essentially using someone else's place to sell your products rather than having your own independent store.

Creating your own ecommerce store that is either separate or integrates with your eBay store can be beneficial for a number of reasons:

  • It separates your business from all other eBay sellers, allowing you to not only develop your own brand image, but also increase the number of users that will become aware of you and the products you have for sale. Customers would now come directly to your store rather than carrying out an eBay search and just stumbling to your store through the results.
  • Provides you with more places for customers to come across your products. This also allows you to take further advantage of both social and mobile commerce by having your store appear correctly on mobile devices. It is expected that in the coming months leading up to Christmas, sales through mobile friendly stores will account for 20% of all online sales.
  • Allows you to have a place to sell your products where you don't have to pay the added eBay fees and the store owner has much more control than the customer.
  • Enables you to have a customised layout and design that relates more to your store and the items you sell. Once you have created a custom design for your ecommerce store, you can then apply that design to your eBay store, breaking away from the generic eBay style and improving the professional brand image your store has.

You may think that expanding your business to branch out from eBay would be a lot more work, but the truth is that having your own ecommerce store really is no extra work. Since we at eSellution began offering a free ecommerce store, we have seen a number of eBay store owners branch out and take their first steps into creating their own brand image through developing an ecommerce store, many of these because they have finally grown fed up with eBay. Our software has an easy to use dashboard interface that allows you to monitor and manage all of your products across all of your platforms easily.

If you run an eBay store but have been thinking about branching out and trying your hand at creating an ecommerce store, you can sign up for a free ecommerce store with eSellution now at: http://www.esellution.co.uk/pricing.html

This gives you the opportunity to have your own store separate from eBay that has a mobile friendly layout and also has a Facebook version of the store for you to take advantage of the growing marketing and selling power of the social media site.

Even if you have a really successful eBay store that provides you with a number of customers and sales every day, why limit your potential growth by just staying with eBay? Reaching out and developing your own brand identity allows you to further increase your sales and truly see how far your business can go.

A detailed guide to increasing your sales on eBay

With over 100 million registered eBay users worldwide, it is becoming more difficult than ever to sell products online. No matter what items you decide you want to sell, there will be thousands of other people out there all selling the exact same products. So, how do you make a customer choose to buy the product from you, rather than getting it from someone else?

While an eBay store owner may not have large amounts of time to spend on optimising their store, there are a few simple tasks you can do both on and off eBay to help not only increase traffic to your store, but also make your products more visible and appealing to customers.

On eBay...

Product Title - One of the more obvious aspects of your products but what you insert will make all the difference in terms of whether a user will find it in their search. The first few words of your product title need to be the keywords that relate to your product. Essentially they need to be the words that a customer would type in a search bar when looking for that particular product. Many people like to put stars or exclamation marks at the start of their product title and while this will help the title stand out visually to the user, it will most likely result in your product appearing further down the search results than you would have liked.

Product Description - Just like your product title, the key to a good product description is to cut out any waffle. It should be clear, concise and include all of the information that a customer will need in order to make an informed decision. You should also include all other information about the item as a whole such as condition, warranty and the delivery options that will be available to the customer. The more information you provide them with, the more comfortable they will feel in purchasing from your store.

As you are a professional business, it is important that you project a professional image to your customers. This means that when writing both the product title and product description you should refrain from the following:

  • Placing capital letters where they aren't grammatically correct
  • Including a number of different fonts in your title and description
  • Including a number of different colours in your title and description

Product Image - One of the most important aspects of any product when determining if a product will actually be sold or not. If your product does not have an image, the likelihood is that the the item won't get sold. The image should clearly show the product to the customer. If the image is blurred or doesn't show the product in its entirety, it's going to make customers sceptical about the product as they may believe something may be wrong with it. Many eBay stores now employ a professional photographer to take images of all their products to ensure that the the images they place on their online store are of the highest possible quality. You should also look to have numerous images of each of your products, showing all areas of the item from various angles. Like I said earlier, the more information you can provide a customer with, the more likely they will make a purchase.

Stand out from your rivals with a custom template from eSellution
Store Template - The look of your store is another important factor in helping your business stand out from your competitors. Having the same generic eBay template that most other stores have is just going to make you seem much less professional and also provides no real reason why a customer should choose your store as opposed to a store that has the same generic template and products. Having a custom eBay template on your store will work wonders in giving your business a new lease of life, making it seem more professional and appealing to visiting customers as well as increasing the number of sales you are going to make, as customers will have more trust and confidence in your products and services.

Increased Speed and Engagement -  Although you may receive a hundreds of customers visiting your store each day, you should try and make the experience as personal as you can for each customer. One of the ways to do this is to keep the customer well informed throughout the entire purchasing process. This means emailing them when the order has been placed, when the order has been processed and when it has been dispatched. Keeping the customer in the loop stops them getting frustrated and also makes them feel more valued, encouraging them to become a repeat buyer in the future. While engagement is important, so is speed. People generally want something as quick as possible, meaning the faster you can get the product to the customer, the happier they are going to be.

A Good DSR - Your detailed seller rating (DSR) is another key aspect of your eBay store as poor feedback from your customers is going to put future customers off buying from your store. All eBay businesses are going to get one or two bad reviews it happens everyone, the key is to act on these bad reviews to make sure that you don't get more reviews for the same issue. The key to making your business a success is to look at all feedback, even negative, in a positive light. All feedback is a great way to make your online store more efficient and appealing to future customers.

Delivery Options - The more options you provide a customer with, the happier they are going to be and delivery options are no different. When a customer makes a purchase from your store, they are going to want to select a delivery option that fits in with their daily lives. Some may want next day delivery, others may want to receive the product within a few working days. Having a variety of options for customers to choose from in terms of delivery is going to make them happier with the whole experience, resulting in not only a sale, but also a good DSR.

Stock Variety - If you find that the products you currently have in your store are struggling to achieve many sales, you may look to freshen up your stock by adding a new line of items. When deciding on new items to sell, you should look at your competitors and customer buying trends to see what are the most popular items people are currently buying and how you can take advantage of a niche market by selling products that your competitors may not be selling.

Off eBay...

While the majority of your customers are going to be people who have come across your products through the eBay search feature, you shouldn't rest on your laurels and rely only on this traffic source. When running your online store, you need to be out there actively engaging with people, drawing them to your store.

Blogging - A great way to help stand yourself out from the crowd so to speak. While there are hundreds of thousands of active eBay stores, only a few of these will actually produce regular blog articles. These blogs are not only a great way to create an identity for your business, but they also draw in users who may not know about your business, but are simply interested in the article. This then gives you the opportunity to transform these users from readers to customers. When deciding what content to produce, you should look to produce articles that are related to the products and services that your business provides. For example, if you run an eBay store selling various clothing items, you may look to produce content about the lastest fashion trends or news from the world of fashion. These blogs will also play a great role in helping improve the ranking of your store in search engines, resulting in even more traffic and sales.

Increase your sales with social media engagement
Social Media - Probably the most important part of marketing and customer engagement for any eBay business. In order to draw customers to your ecommerce store, you are going to have to create a brand identity and make people aware of your business. To do this you should start by making accounts for your business across all social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. This then allows you to generate followers and provide content to these followers, advertising products and offers you currently have in your store. These followers then have the ability to share content you produced to their friends and followers, meaning your content could be exposed to thousands of people in a short space of time.

For those who have never used Pinterest, I strongly recommend using it for your online business. This site allows you to place images of your products on to the site, for users to come across them when they carry out a search. This allows users to become aware of your product without actually visiting your store, increasing the levels of social commerce that your business could achieve.

Forums - Allows you to actively engage with buyers and sellers alike, getting any help or assistance you may need, while also helping provide other users with any help or guidance they may require. Building up a good, authoritative image on these forums, not only helps improve your business image making you seem much more professional, but will also result in more people visiting your online store to take a look at your products and possibly purchase some of them. Another option to take advantage of these forums is to create advertment banners and pay to have them placed on various forums. This increases the exposure your brand can achieve and will result in extra traffic to your eBay store.

Marketing - There are a number of different marketing tools you can look to use in order to help draw customers to your store. This could possibly involve sending out advertisement emails and SMS messages as well as using search engine ads and taking advantage of retargeting. For a small business, I would recommend using email marketing and retargeting to begin with. Email marketing it easy to carry out and allows you to send a message to a large number instantly. Retrargeting allows you to build up regular customers by having your products appear to customer in banner advertisements across various sites. While this costs money to implement, it ensures that your products are being exposed to people who will definitely have an interest in the items, resulting in more traffic and a higher conversion rate for your eBay store.

Sell Across Multiple Platforms - While eBay is going to be your primary source for selling products, there is no harm in increasing the exposure your products can achieve by selling these products across more platforms. Having ecommerce, mobile and Facebook versions of your store allows you to import your eBay products on to each of the platforms and allowing more people to become aware of your products. While you may think this would be a more costly and time consuming route, there are a number of ecommerce platforms that make this relatively simple. The service we offer here at eSellution allows you to create your own ecommerce store selling across all of these platforms, integrating it all with your current eBay store, without you having to spend more time than you currently spend running your eBay store and you can get it all for free
