The best mobile shopping applications for buyers and sellers

With the face of ecommerce ever changing and moving more towards mobile commerce each year, it is important as an online business that you make your online store as mobile accessible as possible in order to achieve the highest possible sales. Whether you're a seller or a buyer, it's important that you are constantly using the most popular shopping applications to not only find the best value products around, but also see how your ecommerce store is ranking in comparison to your competitors.

RedLaser

A shopping application developed by eBay that allows you to find stores within your local area that have the products you are looking to buy, as well as then searching online to compare prices with other online stores in order to find the customer the best possible deal. The feature also boasts a review system that allows people to look at what other people think about a particular product, influencing the customer's decision as whether to make a purchase or not.

However, the most impressive aspect of the application comes in it's barcode scanner. If you are out shopping or have a product at home you would like to replace, you simply scan the barcode using the app and it will then search the local area and online to find that product.

ShopSavvy

One of the more popular shopping application that allows users to not only search for products and deals, but also add details and images of products they have come across. For a business owner, this is a good way to increase your brand awareness by adding your products for users of the application to come across and purchase.

Google Shopper

An application developed by online giants Google that also allows you to scan products, search online and find other local outlets within a geographical location. The application also allows users to search for products through voice commands and also has a daily offers section that provides users a list of all offers which are available at particular outlets. For online sellers, the application can also help develop your social commerce by offering a feature that allows users to share product details with their friends.

Each of these applications is a great way for customers to not only come across your online store, but also allow you to keep an eye on your competitors and see how your store falls within public standing. However, to truly achieve success within this field, you must ensure that your online store is fully optimised for mobile devices. It's not what you say, it's what your customers say

According to figures released at the BAI Retail Delivery conference in Washington, consumers are 12 times more likely to believe something that a person tells that as opposed to a brand. This staggering figure demonstrates the importance for online businesses to use social media to it's full potential in order to generate as many sales as they can through social commerce.

Whether you are setting up a new ecommerce business or have been running an online store for a number of years, you shouldn't overlook the importance of regular social media engagement.

Engaging with the followers of your various social media channels can come in a number of different forms such as sharing blog posts, images, status updates, offers and various products that your ecommerce store provides. Having variety in terms of content ensures you are able to broaden your message as much as possible in order to achieve the highest reach. However, as stated at the start of the article, true social media success for your business will come in your customers sharing information regarding your business between themselves.

While you can't control if your customers do decide to share content regarding your store either by word of mouth or social sharing, you can encourage them to do so by placing social commerce buttons across your various pages allowing them to not only share the page on their social media account, but also have the option to email content to their friends who don't have social media accounts.

As in all aspects of your online store, true success comes in being able to deliver a great overall experience to all customers who visit your store. It's no good having a large number of social media followers and deliver a poor service to the majority of your customers, all this is going to do is seriously harm your public image as most people following your social media page will be doing so just to complain about your service.

For many online businesses, their social media page is the first port of call for potential customers, who look to not only if they have any offers currently running, but also what other customers think of your store. If the majority of people had a pleasant experience, this new user will be more likely to turn into a customer. Read: 'Beginners guide to social media' for information on how to improve your business's social media standing.

eBay enhances it's social commerce

As yesterday marked the launch of eBay's new logo, the online marketplace has announced changes to it's homepage, allowing customers to tailor what they see to suit their own shopping interests, enhancing the levels of social commerce throughout the site.

The feed uses a customers shopping preferences along with their own personal interests to display products from different eBay stores that they believe the user will be interested in. The new feature has been compared to the social media platform Pinterest in it's layout and design.

How will this help online stores?

The benefit of this for an ecommerce store is that the feature can almost be used as a form of retargeting within eBay itself. When a customer purchases from your store, the shopping preferences will be stored within their account details. When the customer visits the home page in the future, there is a chance that similar products from your online store will be displayed for them to see, as they will be similar to the product which the customer originally purchased from the store.

Furthermore, it also means customers purchasing from one of your rivals or another store that sells similar products will also be of benefit for you in the long term, as it allows your products to be viewed by these customers, allowing them to become aware of your brand and possibly visit your store in the future to make a purchase.

eBay are asking all customers who use the new design to provide feedback on how they are finding the new layout.

Digital marketing on the rise for ecommerce stores

The number of online stores investing in digital marketing has never been greater, according to figures released by the Internet Advertising Bureau.

The survey, carried out by accountancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), found that ad spending on the Internet and for mobile phones, rose 12.6% to £2.6 billion when compared to the same point in 2011.

A specific breakdown of the figures found that:

  • Mobile advertising is up 132% to £181.5 million
  • Video advertising is up 43% to £69.8 million
  • Social media banner advertisements are up 36% to £134.2 million
  • Paid advertising is up 15.9% to £1.527 billion, accounting for 59% of all digital advertisement spending
So what does this mean for your ecommere store?

Well, the first obvious thing you should take from this is that if you aren't really putting in the time to develop a strong digital marketing campaign, you may want to do so in an attempt to not only help boost your brand and sales, but to also keep up with your competitors as these increased figures indicate that many online stores are making use of this digital marketing platform.

Where to start?

Although paid advertising makes up around 59% of all digital advertisement spending, you may want to try other avenues before delving into channels such as retargeting and adwords. As pretty much 99.9% of all businesses have some form of social media presence, social media banner advertisements may be the way to go to begin with as not only will it allow you to increase traffic and sales for your online store, it will also allow you to build up a greater social media presence and increase any social commerce your business may have.

Once you have developed strong marketing engagement through these channels, you may then look to branch out and take advantage of other channels such as mobile marketing and other paid advertising as mentioned above. There are a number of different things you can do to help effectively market your business, both for free and paid. Read 'Marketing tools for the big, the small and the just getting started' to find out a variety of marketing techniques, both digital and non-digital, that you can incorporate into your marketing strategy.

Why 1 billion Facebook users is good for us all...

Yesterday, Facebook announced that they had finally reached the one billion mark of users who were actively logging into their accounts each month. Looking at it globally, that's around a massive 1 in every 7 people on the face of the planet logging into the social media site.

Although the majority of these users use the social media site to interact with friends, post status updates and add photos, within Q2 , around 84% of the site's revenue was generated from advertising and with the number of new advertising features that have recently been added, this figure is set to increase in the coming months and years.

While you may only be able to reach a small percentage of these people, a small percentage of 1 billion is still a significant number and having your brand exposed across this platform is a great way to not only make people aware of your online store, but also increase the number of sales you can achieve, helping your business become a greater success.

In recent months, the public troubles Facebook have faced in terms of their falling share price and waning customer satisfaction, many people have questioned the sites future and it's ability to truly help any business. However, the recent introduction of added marketing platforms within the site, serves as a great way to help give your ecommerce store that much needed boost in brand awareness.

The truth is while people are growing annoyed with the new timeline feature and the new advertising additions, many users both store owners and customers need Facebook to still be a huge social media platform. For startup businesses that doesn't have much to spend on advertising and marketing, having a free social media platform with 1 billion users to target is invaluable, making the difference between whether your business gets of the ground or struggles to do anything at all.

From the perspective of the consumer, the more users actively getting involved with Facebook each month, the more resources brands are going to put into making the social media platform a success. This means customers will be exposed to more stores and come across more great value prices as well as find out about the various offers that are running across different stores. In terms of business promotion, Facebook is a win-win situation for both buyers and sellers alike.

While everyone knows that in order to achieve either social media or social commerce success within Facebook, you must first create your own business page. However, in terms of self promotion, that is just the tip of the iceberg. Facebook also boosts a number of different added marketing channels to advertise your business such as promoting your ads so that they appear at the top of the search bar and or within users newsfeeds, having users share your relevant pages with their friends and having any articles or content you produced appear within the trending articles feature on users newsfeed page.

Although some of these added marketing features require you to actually pay from them, as opposed to only having a business page that allows you to post status updates and content for free, these added features allow you to advertise your brand beyond the people who follow your business page or are people who are friends of people who do. The features allow you to reach people who you may have struggled to reach through other methods and while these definitely aren't for everyone, they are just things you should consider when running your online business.

Looking at a new way to sell online

When setting up an online store, many users go through the same channels of selling on eBay or having their own ecommerce store. However, due to recent funding from seed fund accelerator, 500 Startups, Shopinterest looking to be a newly growing platform for users to sell their products online.

Shopinterest allows users to create their own ecommerce store out of any Pinterest board they may have. For example, you simply need to add all of the images of products you have for sale on to one Pinterest board and you would then be able to transform that board into an ecommerce shop that has a fully functional shopping cart. Even if you don't have a Pinterest board, you can add the product images to your account and turn them into a store.

The service underpins the ever-growing trend of social commerce and while it is currently only available to residents in the US, Shopinterest are expected to make it available to other countries within the coming weeks. However, you need to be aware that this is not a free service. Once a user signs up they are then able to take part in a trial, but once the trial is over users will be required to pay for the service. The amount you have to pay will depend on the number of sales you make and products you have in your inventory.

While this seems to be a step forward in terms of developing social commerce to a new level, the fact that users have to pay for the service in a similar way that they would do on other marketplaces like eBay, may be a draw back for a number of online sellers. If a user already has an eBay store, they are going to be reluctant to pay a whole new set of fees to a different platform in order to have their products display on that site also. Furthermore, many users pay eBay's fees because they know the site has dedicated customers as well as a high volume of traffic and sales, so they know they will be getting value for money. Shopinterest is a rather new ecommerce platform and some users may be reluctant to commit to the platform until they are able to see a real growth in traffic and sales within the site.

As I touched on yesterday, developing new channels to sell online is always the right way to go for your business. However, which platforms you choose to move on to is entirely dependant on the products you sell, your customer base and how comfortable you yourself are with using that platform. While Shopinterest could prove to be very successful in helping to enhance a store's sales through social commerce, if you are reluctant to pay for an unproven service, you may look to take advantage of a number of free ecommerce shopping cart platforms that are available to day. Such as the free multichannel platform we offer here at eSellution, integrating an ecommerce, Facebook and mobile store with an eBay store you may already have.

Why it may be time to branch out from eBay

Having an eBay account to buy and sell products has become a way of life for many people who use the marketplace to purchase their goods, sell items they want to get rid of and even make a living by running an eBay store.

While the site has large traffic, many stores and a variety of different products available for customers, the increasing fees, customer demands and guidelines which people must follow has becoming an increasing problem for many online sellers.

For this reason, many online stores are now considering branching out from eBay. By this I do not mean leaving eBay altogether as the traffic and sales the site can generate is substantial and something that no business should miss out on. However, businesses shouldn't rely on eBay as their only online selling channel as you are essentially using someone else's place to sell your products rather than having your own independent store.

Creating your own ecommerce store that is either separate or integrates with your eBay store can be beneficial for a number of reasons:

  • It separates your business from all other eBay sellers, allowing you to not only develop your own brand image, but also increase the number of users that will become aware of you and the products you have for sale. Customers would now come directly to your store rather than carrying out an eBay search and just stumbling to your store through the results.
  • Provides you with more places for customers to come across your products. This also allows you to take further advantage of both social and mobile commerce by having your store appear correctly on mobile devices. It is expected that in the coming months leading up to Christmas, sales through mobile friendly stores will account for 20% of all online sales.
  • Allows you to have a place to sell your products where you don't have to pay the added eBay fees and the store owner has much more control than the customer.
  • Enables you to have a customised layout and design that relates more to your store and the items you sell. Once you have created a custom design for your ecommerce store, you can then apply that design to your eBay store, breaking away from the generic eBay style and improving the professional brand image your store has.

You may think that expanding your business to branch out from eBay would be a lot more work, but the truth is that having your own ecommerce store really is no extra work. Since we at eSellution began offering a free ecommerce store, we have seen a number of eBay store owners branch out and take their first steps into creating their own brand image through developing an ecommerce store, many of these because they have finally grown fed up with eBay. Our software has an easy to use dashboard interface that allows you to monitor and manage all of your products across all of your platforms easily.

If you run an eBay store but have been thinking about branching out and trying your hand at creating an ecommerce store, you can sign up for a free ecommerce store with eSellution now at: http://www.esellution.co.uk/pricing.html

This gives you the opportunity to have your own store separate from eBay that has a mobile friendly layout and also has a Facebook version of the store for you to take advantage of the growing marketing and selling power of the social media site.

Even if you have a really successful eBay store that provides you with a number of customers and sales every day, why limit your potential growth by just staying with eBay? Reaching out and developing your own brand identity allows you to further increase your sales and truly see how far your business can go.

eBay begins to embrace social sharing [Video]

eBay have released a new beta tool called Setify, that allows both online stores and sellers to manage and share the various collections they have online.

While the tool is currently only aimed at collectors who have coin or comic book collections, the tool allows you to see the potential growth in social commerce as users can create wish lists of items they need to complete their collections, as well as letting people know what they already own and advertise any of these collectable items they have for sale.

Many have compared it as a similar feature to Pinterest, but solely aimed at collectables through the marketplace. eBay plan to increase the number of categories that users can select on the Setify tool in the future. The tool will also be available to download as a mobile app later this year according to the eBay Ink Blog.

The Setify beta is only currently available to those who have received an beta invitation from eBay. This release is just one of a number of new features eBay have announced to help modernise the marketplace, the most recent being the newly released logo earlier this month.

Check out the video below to get a look at the Setify tool.

Biggest mistakes in a business's social media campaign

As many online stores now use social media as a way to inform and engage with their customer base, all businesses are now looking to take advantage of this channel as much as they can. However, success through social media sites is not a given, there are a number of mistakes a lot of businesses make.

Having a selling tone when posting content

When placing content on your relevant social media pages, the tone of your content is very important. To actively engage with your audience you need to have a voice that is engaging but also professional. Although you want to engage users to visit your online store and make a purchase, you do not want to have a voice that seems as though you are trying to sell them something. All that is only going to do is put your audience off and have the opposite affect to what you were hoping for.

Not correctly measuring your success

When deciding to embark on a social media campaign, you need to determine a way for you to measure whether your overall strategy is successful. For some this is how many new followers you have managed to accumulate, for others it is how much traffic you have been able to generate from your social media page to your ecommerce store and for some it is how many sales they have generated through social commerce. You don't want to just use social media without any foresight or plan as you won't be able to accurately measure your success, or lack of it if proves to be the case. Having a way to measure your social media success allows you to see what is the most effective content you are posting and also highlights aspects of your strategy that aren't working and need to be changed.

Making it a one way channel

If you create a social media account expecting to generate a number of followers without actually providing them with anything substantial, you are not going to get very far. Like most aspects of life, social media success is based largely on the idea of give and take. To get people following you and to them have them take an interest in your business and the products you provide, you must provide them with content that interests them. For this you will be rewarded with extra followers, extra engagement and extra traffic to your ecommerce store

Only posting status updates

To make sure you not only get followers, but have them actively engaging with your social media page, you need to post content that is going to have people regularly returning to your page. While status updates may be interesting to some people, the truth is others really aren't going to care. For this reason, you need to post a variety of content that ensures that there is something on your page that interests everyone. This means that you should be looking to post blog articles, images, videos, products, offers and promotions in addition to your regular status updates.

One post every now and then

While it is important to vary your content to engage different audiences, it is absolutely imperative that you are placing content and engaging with your followers on a daily basis. Only posting content once a week or even once a month is going to see your engagement figures go way down, which will play no part in helping to improve your brand image and drive traffic to your website.

Keeping quiet

As I highlighted earlier, social media is a two-way street. You post content and then your audience replies or asks questions as they see fit. It is this engagement with your audience that allows you to not only project your public image, but also develop the initial relationship with some of your customers. While some of these comments from customers may be negative, you don't want to hide away, refusing to reply in fear that it may damage your image. You should look to respond to all questions and opinions, either projecting your own point of view or looking to ask further questions in order to develop some form of discussion. If the comments have been negative, don't take offence to them and respond with anger. At all times you must be professional, courteous and engaging in all your posts. Although a response may be aimed at one specific person, you need to remember that everyone else is always watching.

Obsessing over the figures

Just because you lose one follower, doesn't mean it's the end of the world. No matter what social media platform you are using, you will find that your total follower figure fluxuates on a daily basis. Particularly with Twitter, a number of accounts on the site are either bots or dummy accounts, meaning that if they have followed you, they may then leave a few days later. Although you want your social media site to be success and see your follower figures steadily increasing over a certain period of time, losing the odd follower here and there isn't going to make too much difference. At the end of the day you only want people who are interested in your content to be following you. If someone decides that they don't like your content then that isn't someone you want following you anyway.

Useful tools to increase your followers

When running an online store, your engagement through social media is important in not only allowing you to generate added traffic and sales for your business through social commerce, but to also allowing you to engage with your customers and create a unique brand identity. However, if you run your own business, with the number of social media posts and updates you receive every day, it can often be difficult to keep track of all your different accounts. If you are struggling to monitor your social media presence, you can look to use a social media tools in order to give you a helping hand.

Twitter Lists - While this is simply making use of the Twitter "List" feature within the social platform rather than an separate application, it is a great tool for filtering out your followers in to separate categories. What I mean by this is that, in order to create a brand identity for your business, you may have followed people who are to do with your field of interests, but whose Tweets you don't really care about. You can use the Twitter list feature to segment those people whose Tweets you would like to see into one specific list, meaning that you won't longer have posts you don't really care about taking up space on your feed. The only downside to this is that a list can only contain a maximum of 20 users, meaning that if you have a few hundred followers, you are going to have to filter down your followers into specific lists that relate to what they Tweet.

Crowdbooster - A social media application that you can link to your Facebook and Twitter accounts allowing you to gain an insight into the analytics of your platforms. This enables you to see which of your posts had the best effect on each platform, giving you a helpful look at how you can alter future messages to increase their effectiveness. The application also gives you recommendations about who you should follow that are related to your ecommerce store, while also giving you further tips on what time of the day you should post your messages. One of the key features of Crowdbooster comes in it's audience insights feature. What this does is group your followers into specific categories related to things that they are interested in. If you find that a vast majority are interested in one particular topic, you can look to tailor your content to target these individuals.

Klout - Although many people constantly question how effective your Klout score is, the tool can be useful in allowing you to generate more information regarding your social media posts than you would get through the platforms themselves. A recent overhaul in Klout's layout allows you to see people who have mentioned and engaged with you as well as how each of your posts have performed on each platform. There are a total of 12 different social media platforms for you to link together. Depending on your engagement across the various social media sites, you will receive a "Klout score" that is generated out of 100. The higher the number, the more socially effective you are.

Social Mention - One of the better social media tools that you can use. If you run an online store looking to promote your brand then this is definitely an application you should be using. How is works is that you visit the social mention website and enter the keyword or phrase you would like to search for. This would most likely be the name of your business. The application will then search across all social media platforms and bring back a list of all the posts which have mentioned that particular word. This is a great way to constantly keep up to date with what it being said about your business or products.

Postling - Another social media tool that allows you to monitor all of your social media accounts from one user interface. Rather than having to post content on each of your social media accounts, you can use the tool to simply write out your post once and have it placed on each of your social media pages, allowing you to maximise your reach and engagement. Like other tools you can also group together contacts into specific categories, while also allowing you to see instantly what people are saying about you and your posts. However, one of the main benefits for small businesses comes in the ability to instantly see any reviews about your business that are left on Yelp or CitySearch. If you run a small business that is based heavily on public opinion, a number of bad reviews could cripple your business. This feature allows you to become instantly aware of any reviews posted and enables you to respond to one bad review, stopping you from receiving numerous bad reviews for the same issue. The only downside to this is that you must pay to use it, starting at $1 the first month and then $5 for each month after that.

Men now love to shop more than women?

The general stereotype we see these days is that women love to shop and men don't. Well information produced by online market research company, uSamp, has seemingly destroyed this idea.

According to their research, they found that more men make an online purchase through mobile devices than women. The main reason for this is most likely due to the ease in which someone can purchase a product from their phone. They do not have to travel to the highstreet, they don't even have to be sat at a computer. No matter where they may be, or what they may be doing, they can still purchase products online using their mobile phone.

With 45% of men and 34% of women surveyed using their mobile to complete an online transaction, it is further evidence as to the importance for all online store owners to have a mobile friendly store for customers to visit.

The research also found that women are more likely than men to take advantage of an ecommerce store's offer through the use of mobile customers, while men are more likely to improve your businesses social commerce by telling their friends about a purchase they have made via their social media platforms.

One of the most popular type of product purchased by males is electronic goods, accounting for 27% of all mobile purchases. So if you run an online store that sells electronic goods, has specific offers and allows customers to share content via social media sites, you need to make sure you have a mobile version of your store to take advantage of this popular shopping platform.

If you currently don't have a mobile version of your ecommerce store, you can get some from eSellution for free.

Beginners guide social media success

When running an ecommerce store, the ability to effectively engage with your community through your social media channels is going to be important in helping bring traffic to your site and encourage them to purchase. However, for those who may not use social media often or may be new to running an online store, where should you create social media accounts and what should you post?

Where to post?

While the two obvious social media sites you definitely need to look at are Facebook and Twitter, these shouldn't be the only two that you focus on. Today, there are a number of different social media sites that are able to get a high number of users interacting with their site each day. These platforms include Pinterest, YouTube, Google+ and also social bookmarking sites such as StumbleUpon, Digg, Delicious and Reddit. Placing your content on each one of these sites is going to allow as many people as possible to become aware of your business name and what it is you offer. This, albeit limited initial engagement, forms the basis for your customer relationships, increasing the chances of you generating traffic and sales.

What to post?

So now we have decided where we need to place our social media content, the next thing we need to decide is what are we actually going to post? Well what you post depends on what it is your business offers and how much time you have to spend on it.

Blog Posts - This isn't a sales piece, rather an informative piece that is related to your business. So if you run an electronics store, you may write some articles on the latest technology news or how certain electronic products could help make managing your life easier. Your blog posts are a great way to not only improve the ranking of your website through keywords, but to also create a platform to inform and engage with your customers. Within your blog you can also place links letting people know how they can access your online store.

Products - The more places you can show off your wears to people, the more chance you have of turning them into customers. You should be placing images on all of your social media sites on a regular basis, showing off the most popular products you have for sale and also any new products that you add to your store. While the best social media sites for showing off your product images are Facebook and Pinterest, there is nothing wrong with placing them across all of your social platforms. The strength of social media comes in the ability for users to share these images between their contacts, meaning your content can be exposed to a whole new customer base who didn't even know your store existed.

Sales and Offers - In terms of providing content to make sure you are able create a popular social media platform, this is the most important. As we have mentioned in the past, the majority of people who follow a business on social media sites, do so to find out about the latest sales and offers. For this reason you should make sure that as soon as you decide to launch promotion, you place it on your social media sites for everyone to see. You can also choose to reward your social media followers by creating a promotion specifically for them. This would allow them to enter a specific code you have posted on your social media account, which they can then use to receive a discount on a product. Not only does this make your social media followers feel more valued, it also attracts new customers to join your social media channels just to find out about these offers.

Also, when running a promotion, you can also look to increase customer engagement by creating a promotion that specifically requires them to give their opinion, possibly through some sort of voting system. For example, you could post four items from your store on a specific social media site, such as Facebook and ask your fans to vote on which item they would like to see a discount on. This way you are placing a promotion on an item that you know will be popular with customers and will also get sales.

Answering Questions - Sometimes it is the simple things that are going to bring you the greatest success. While posting blog content, images and offers are all very important, sometimes answering a question from a user could be just as effective. Answering any queries users may have not only makes them feel more comfortable about purchasing from your store in the future, it also helps give your business a personality, making it seem much more approachable and trusting in the eyes of potential customers.

Social Commerce - Within today's world of online selling, social media is not only a place to interact with customers, but is now also a platform where you can sell products directly to the customers. If you have your own Facebook store, you are able to have customers purchase items directly from Facebook. Depending on the items your store sells, this could be a popular platform as they would not have to leave Facebook to visit a third party site and you could also take advantage of a customer's buying impulse by allowing them to purchase a product as quick as possible.

Harness Facebook's advertising pull to grow your small business [Infographic]

Facebook have released an infographic highlighting the positive effect Facebook advertising can have on your business. With a share price that is now worth half of what it was when first launched and a newly announced ad campaign that will see advertisements appearing within users newsfeeds, Facebook are looking to develop new advertising streams in order to give themselves some increase revenue.

However, while this infographic can be seen as a sales pitch to get businesses to advertise with Facebook, how can a small business use Facebook to help increase the traffic and sales their online store can receive?

Well the most obvious advertising for any business on Facebook is creating a Facebook business page. With 955 million active monthly users, there is a substantial audience for you to advertise your products to. The true success of the Facebook business page comes not in the ability to provide your audience with status updates, but the ease in which your business can be spread to various users through word of mouth and content sharing. When deciding on marketing channels for your business, Facebook can be a much better option than other channels for a number of reasons.

When setting up a small business, the budget you have to spend on marketing could be rather limited. This means that anything you can get for free is going to be very beneficial. In terms of cost per person that your brand reaches, Facebook is head and shoulders above any other marketing channel. If you run an ecommerce store, you may decide to advertise your business with local newspapers and on local TV. While this will allow you to reach thousands of people, the cost to advertise on these platforms would most likely be more than a newly established business would be willing to pay.

According to Facebook, 92% of people are willing to trust something shown to them by friends or family, whereas only 47% would trust something advertised on TV or in newspapers. Now while you shouldn't discount TV and newspaper advertising altogether, as depending on the business you run, these can still be beneficial marketing tools in generating sales, you are most likely going to see the most success through Facebook. When a customer finds a product on your store that they really like, one of the first things they do is share that product on to their Facebook news feed. This social commerce then allows everyone related to that person to see that product, gaining instant exposure for your store. Generally, friends tend to have similar interests meaning if one person likes a particular product, you will probably find that their friends will too.

Facebook also boasts over 500 million users regularly accessing the social media site through their mobile devices. This gives you a great opportunity to draw traffic to your mobile commerce site. However, to do this you must first place a URL link directly to your mobile site on your Facebook business page. Placing your normal web address on the page will just result in your regular ecommerce website loading up on the user's mobile device.

While you may not have the budget to take advantage of some of Facebook's larger advertising platforms, one of the features you can look to take advantage of is the 'Promote' feature. What this does is place one posts on to the newsfeed of certain users. Depending on what and where you sell, you can tailor which users these posts appear to based on features such as gender and location. However, the one major drawback for this is that you can't use this feature unless you already have an established audience. To use the Promote feature for your Facebook business page you must already have at least 400 likes and no more than 1000. What this means is that if you are a newly established business, you must use other marketing techniques for Facebook to first get your account to 400 likes before you can then begin using this feature.

Don't forget about the website

In the last few weeks we have looked at all of the various aspects that make up your online store such as social and mobile commerce. However, while these are all important parts in making your store a success, you shouldn't forget about the importance in ensuring your ecommerce website is always to the highest possible standard.

A recent survey carried out by Econsultancy found that out of the 100 senior decision makers of global retail brands questioned, 59% intend to invest the greatest amount on improving their websites in the next 12 months.

While small businesses cannot afford to spend the same budget on keeping their website up to date as some major brands, there are a number of things you can look to do to help ensure that your website never falls behind your rivals.

Website Redesign

Although the store front or template style of your online store could look really good at first, with the constant improvements in design, you may soon find that your competitors have moved ahead of you in creating an appealing site. If you haven't made any changes to your online store for a long time, you should look at possibly retouching your site to give it a new feel or if you wish you could look to give it a complete overhaul.

As well as creating a new design for your store, you may also look to create a new logo. Creating a new logo not only allows you to give your store a new lease of life, but it can also help you create a new and improved brand identity that will bring a whole new customer base. However, what you need to bear in mind is that your logo plays a large part in the current brand identity of your business. Changing the logo may alienate some customers, resulting in them feeling less comfortable purchasing from your store.

Keyword Analysis

Now I know that to some people, search engine optimisation can be a rather dull task, but the benefits it brings to your ecommerce store means that it is something you should look at. As keywords play a primary role in your website's search engine ranking, leaving the same keywords over a prolonged period of time can result in your website falling sharply down the rankings.

While leaving the look of your store front can result in it becoming outdated, the same applies to your keywords. Over a period of time, keywords can go up or down in popularity with people's interests constantly changing. When placing keywords on your website, you need to regularly check how popular specific keywords are to ensure you don't have words linked to your site that generates very little traffic.

Product Layout

If after a period of time you find that you have good traffic but your sales are slowly declining, you may look to try and freshen up your site by changing the layout of your products. This could mean introducing new categories to break up some of your products or simply spacing them out with less products per page. A clearer layout makes it easier for customers to navigate their way through your site and find a product they would like to purchase.

Changing the Domain

When you originally set up your online store, you may have chosen a domain address purely because some of the others you wanted weren't available. Every now and then you should check if any of the alternative domains you wanted have become available. This will allow you to transfer your store across to a domain that you would rather have as it's name may be better or it could be much more effective from an SEO standpoint. However, when changing your domain, you do not want to get rid of your old address, but simply use it as a redirect to your new address. This means that when a customer visits your old website they will still be able to follow you to your new store in order to make a purchase.

Even if you decide that you want to keep your original domain, you can still look to purchase other domains as landing pages for your store. The more direct links you have to your online store, the more traffic you are going to generate.

However, while the website is of crucial importance, out of those asked in the survey, 74% stated that they were intending to increase their online presence through social media, with 35% focussing to look more closely at Pinterest.
